Introduction

We were required to design a straw bridge with a strong and lightweight design. The strength of the bridge will be tested during the Straw Bridge Competition Day which will be held on 12th September 2012 at Laman Perdana. Abridgeis astructurebuilt tospanphysical obstacles such as abody of water,valley, orroad, for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle. Designs of bridges vary depending on the function of the bridge, the nature of the terrain where the bridge is constructed, the material used to make it and the funds available to build it. Figure 1.1 show some type of bridge model. All of model have the advantages and disadvantages. Everyone have their own idea to build their own bridge. An engineer always have an idea to build anything that give benefit to humans. Besides that, with teamwork, an engineer can produce better bridge. The objectives of this straw bridge competition is to apply design process in product development, to use computer software in written report, and to express the task in a systematic manner.

Collecting InformationDesign Specification

1. The dimension for the base of the bridge does not exceed 50 cm x 10 cm.

2. The height for the base of the bridge is 20 cm.

3. Use only normal sized straws ( 5 mm) as the main material.

4. Use only bigger straws ( 12 mm) to increase the height of the bridge base. Only four bridge columns are allowed in your design.

5. Can only use candles to heat the pin in order to attach the straw to one another, matches, scissors, ruler and knife in developing the bridge.ReferencesWe have collect all data to build the bridge by used some books and surfing the internet to find some example of an ideas so that we can complete our report on mini project of straw bridge.

Information from the lecturer

Our lecturer Encik Fizam has give some idea and tip to make our bridge more strong and lightweight. Without knowledge, anything cant be done. We asked Encik Fizam about the process of constructing the straw bridge in order to improve the functions and structures of the straw bridge.
