contract to enlarge the Burrup Materials Facility inthe North West of Australia.Strategic Marine was appointed a major subcontractorto DORIC Engineering for the Woodside contract toupgrade existing tug boat berths in Burrup, as a partof Woodsides A$12 billion Pluto LNG Project whichis set to become the fastest developed LNG project, with rst gas to be delivered in 2010.The 8.5 million Australian dollar contract is to doublethe capacity of the Burrup Materials Facility. Thefacility can currently hold four tugs, the upgrade willexpand the facility to an eight-tug pen capacity, withthe capability to dock vessels up to 45 metres inlength. The main structures comprising pontoons, strutsand access ways will be built in Vietnam at StrategicMarines Shipyard in Vung Tau, with constructionstarting in November 2009. When asked about the challenges in integrating theeffort of Strategic Marines vast global network ofshipyards, Mark Newbold replied.

The Woodside project is a great example of howwe are able to structure projects across more thanone shipyard. We are able to provide clients with thecost benets associated with building offshore, whilststill operating to Australian business standards andquality management systems. The project is also agreat opportunity to use our maritime experience toprovide services such as vessel ret and repair aswell as aluminium and steel fabrication. The extension involves 4 pontoons varying from 35 -54 metres in length, access ways, and 25 tonne strutsupports. Utility and services, which includes water, fuel, electricity and communications, will be providedat each vessel berth. We are delighted to be included at the fore front ofone of the worlds largest LNG developments. I amcondent this project will showcase Strategic Marinesdiverse capabilities in building our brand outside

SM SIGNS cONTRAcT WITH LOcAL WA MARINE cOMPANy

Ship builder Strategic Marine has signed a contract

with a local West Australian marine operations

company, Bhagwan Marine, to build a 48.5 metre

landing craft for use in the Australian offshore oil and

    gas industry.

The vessel will be used in Western Australias north-west hydrocarbon province and has been designed byInternational Maritime Consultants, to accommodate

for low incline beach landings. The crafts design

features a low angle bow to enable heavy equipmentto be driven over the ramp door.

With a 12.8 metre beam, the vessel can accommodateup to ten 20-foot containers with a maximum payload

    of 400 tonnes.

An added advantage is its economical fuelconsumption of about 150 litres per hour at 10 knots

    cruising speed.

The vessel, with plans to name it the BhagwanShaker after its sister vessel is named BhagwanMover, will be built at Strategic Marines largestshipyard at Vung Tau, Vietnam.

Strategic Marine will be working around the clock

to complete the contract in time for the vessels rstscheduled contract, in mid-February 2010.

Managing Director, Mark Schiller, said the contract

represented an exciting threshold in broadening the

    companys services and expertise.

Although we have vast experience building landingcraft, the design and dimensions are a rst forStrategic Marine as is the contract with the Bhagwan

Marine Group which we are looking forward to

working with more and more into the future, said MrSchiller.

Loui Kannikoski, managing director of Bhagwan

Marine said: We have chosen to build with Strategicdue to their quality of build and also commitment to

    the very tight build time.

Although a multi-cargo vessel, it will be primarilyused to transfer building and construction equipment

in the areas around Dampier, Onslow and Barrow

    Island.

We would like to think this landing craft will have anadvantage over other vessels, with the specialisedability to land on the beach, in these locations, Mr

    Kannikoski said.

KORyOU MARU DONATION TO A MARITIME INSTITUTE

West Australian shipbuilder, Strategic Marine has

given back to industry, by donating a 34.8 metreex-shing Vessel, the Koryou Maru, to the WestAustralian not for prot, Maritime Training WAFoundation Inc, who has partnered with the WA

    based Registered Training Organisation, the

    Australasian Maritime Institute.

Previously a long lining vessel, based out ofGeraldton, the Koryou Maru will be transformed

into a training vessel with a number of modicationsplanned to be completed by year end.

Mark Newbold chairman of Strategic Marine said:

Having worked on boats all my life, I understand thevalue of practical training and hands-on experience. This vessel will be a great training tool for young seafarers to master their craft.

The Australasian Maritime Institute is a great

organisation with many highly qualied and dedicatedindustry members, and were extremely pleased to

    help the industry.

We hope by donating the Koryou Maru we can also

encourage other businesses to look for opportunities

to do their bit to support industry development, hesaid..

The Koryou Maru will provide West Australianstudents with a real opportunity to complete courses

    to their full potential.

Principal, Captain Bernie Unwin, founded theAustralasian Maritime Institute, formerly known as

Swan Maritime Institute, in 1992, and has expanded

its curriculum nationwide, focusing on a large range

    of internationally recognised maritime courses.

We are the only Institute in WA that will providepractical training for Master Class 4 Skippers Tickets,

this holds us in good stead for the future, said Mr

    Unwin.

The Koryou Maru will allow us to broaden the scope

of courses available and give reality to currentcourses such as the Master Class 4 and MarineEngine Driver Grade 1, which is what the WesternAustralian industry needs he said.

This invaluable, specialised practical training hasbecome a critical element in the eyes of the Marine

State Authority in WA as part of the assessment

    process for licensing.

With the donation value of the Koryou Maru beingat least $400,000, this donation is an invaluable giftto the future of marine training in Western Australia

    Unwin added.

Once the vessel modications are complete, CaptainUnwin expects to have 600-1000 students takeadvantage of the practical training through 2010,and would like to see those numbers increase in the

    years to come.

The vessel will operate and be based out of CockburnSound.
