The GSCS would like to thank everyone who responded to the call for action and submitted answers to the survey from the DaVinci Group. There were over 7600 respondents who signed-on in support of the DaVinci Group’s effort to help create reform in the CCE. This represents a significant number of people who responded within a short two-week window, so thank you for taking quick action!

Unfortunately, in spite of our efforts and the support of a significant segment of the chiropractic profession, it was recommended by the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI) to renew the Council on Chiropractic Education’s (CCE) recognition by the United States Department of Education (DoE). The vote was not unanimous with three committee members voting against it.

The vote followed nearly five hours of proceedings and at least some of the sentiment in the end was that if CCE had three years maybe they would sufficiently clean up their act that the next proceeding would not be such a fiasco. Society Experience and the Long ViewBy Joseph F. Donofrio, D.C. • [email protected]

A Letter from the Editor

Now I’m no brighter than the average guy and God knows that I’ve got a ton of personality flaws, but just by living and practicing for the past 45 years, I’ve learned some things that I thought some of you might find valuable in the world of Straight/Cash practice or even for those striving to attain such practice. I’ve seen these issues long enough, and with sufficient frequency in my own practice, that I have confidence in saying that they rise mighty close to being actual truths.

First, if I have the time on each person’s visit to discuss town politics, the failures of Medicine, the last professional sports event or flu shots, then I also have more than enough time to reinforce and expand the member’s Chiropractic knowledge. Can any of us say that most or all of our practice members (pm) have a “great” understanding of things TIC?? I think not! Yet we waste the 15 minutes we have each week with the pm talking all manner of things that do not assure our or their future in Chiropractic. Talk TIC and leave others to talk the things that they are expert on, both you and your pm will benefit.

Second, if a great number of your folks start care and are gone in three to six months, either your Orientation is very lacking or you are talking a good game but not living it and the pm has noticed you are not “walking the walk.” Best example: you stress the importance of regular care and then randomly cancel office hours making it difficult for them to comply. If your folks are staying for two to three years and then dropping out in any great number, you are failing to make their visits happy, “fun,” interesting and stimulating. The answer, develop a personality and learn to “lighten up.” Now if your folks are staying for eight to ten years or more (and I mean 70 percent are staying, not just some) you have found the formula for success. DO NOT mess with it by looking to “improve” it; you have arrived at the center of the

It is WHEN the chiropractors align themselves with power (and the mindset of power, which is the need to be right and always in control) that there is simply very little room for being present to the practice member… that spacious place WHERE chiropractic philosophy is actually able to form us on a daily basis for the rest of our lives. We told students to “immerse themselves in the philosophy”, yet we seldom modeled it at the practice level. So very often the individual chiropractor did not know how to do it either! This became evident in the late 70s WHEN our leaders gave way to the CCE and protected the institutions over truth and principles. It followed that the field chiropractors also gave in to the FACT that people came to the office for their symptoms and pains. Resentments set in and many chiropractors gave up telling the story altogether.

ALL of us chiropractors are in need to STOP holding ourselves up, so we can be held by the very foundation of the 33 principles of chiropractic. There, amazingly, you are NOT in control and ONLY the principles need to be right. That is ALWAYS the special space of any positive practice encounter and it is admittedly rare as it cannot happen WHEN we rush to condemnation or seek too-quick resolution to have lifetime practice members. You see WHY “owning the philosophy” will invariably be a minority and suspect position.

To “own the philosophy” is hard work. One needs a “beginner’s mind”, which is an opening to what might just be… and surely is that which

is already WITHIN all of us, the law of active organization that runs the whole body. It is that mind that you must draw upon and depend upon. We must CONSTANTLY remind each other of that fact! Then it is you WHO can choose to tell the story in simple ways moment by moment according to the “space” of the practice member without caring if it even takes a lifetime for the practice member to “get it.” Our mandate is first to ‘OWN IT” ourselves! HOW do we do that? As I mentioned above, as you own the philosophy you will NOT divide the field of the “moment of the encounter” (the office visit)… it is you WHO will choose to receive the moment by being present to it. It demands some degree of detachment from your own “opinions.” It is you WHO choose to hold the reality of the moment of WHERE the encounter is MOVING, knowing that if it is true, it is its own best argument. That’s WHY you do not need to be anxious or try too hard. It is more allowing yourself to play while holding of truth, with the readiness for energy/matter to express the instructive information of the innate intelligence of the body, as your life goes on.

It requires “non-polarity” thinking from educated intelligence (if you prefer that phrase). It teaches you HOW to hold creative tensions… HOW to practice chiropractic with paradox and contradictions… HOW not to give in to the outside-in-below-up viewpoint, and therefore to be able to practice the chiropractic objective which is to locate, analyze and correct vertebral subluxations for a full expression of the innate FORCES of the innate

Sometimes I get emails asking me to share HOW to apply pure philosophy to daily practice. My answer is ALWAYS the same: The exact same way that you apply pure philosophy to your daily life!

My observation is that “to apply pure philosophy”, a chiropractor moves forward step by step from a totally outside-in-below-up thinking to an above-down-inside-out thinking at the highest levels. I call this higher way of seeing and being present OWNING THE PHILOSOPHY. As we clarify this way of being, the practice of chiropractic will experience a monumental leap forward. It is really about being present to your practice members. It’s about simultaneously living our simple “now” with the simple “now” of the practice member, and not hide in the past or worry about the future, as we mentally rehearse resentments and make our case for WHY we are right and they are wrong.

You’ve heard me say it before: The practice of chiropractic is about telling the story over and over and over and over and over again in as many creative ways as doable. The question is: HOW?

It is about WHO you choose to BE about HOW you see chiropractic. And HOW you see is WHAT you see. And to tell the story over and over and over and over again is to be able to be fully present… without fear, without bias and without condemnation. It is such hard work for the educated intelligence and for the educated body that I think most of us would simply prefer to check spines all day long without being engaged by our practice members. That would NOT be reality at all… it would be dis-connectedness from reality.

PRESIDENTIAL PERSPECTIVESStand Your Ground

By Jay Yuhas, D.C. • [email protected]

Here we are coming into 2014 already. We wish the best at Garden State Chiropractic Society for your family and your practice.

Stand your ground. It’s a phrase that was maligned over the past year with using an inappropriate amount of force, but the phrase has a lot of validity for what we do in chiropractic.

The most important time to stand your ground is when you are being attacked. The laws in many states allow for you to protect your home and property. Our home and property is the vertebral subluxation and the practice of correcting it.

The home is a scared place and needs to be protected by those that love it the most. These are those who keep the house. No one man can own a concept as great as Straight Chiropractic but it is our sacred trust to keep the flame from going out.

Whatever our contributions are to chiropractic, we need to make them now. It is my hope that you join us this year in making Straight Chiropractic and the practice thereof great!

Sincerely,

Jay Yuhas, DCJay Yuhas, D.C., President

As chiropractors, we are a pretty independent bunch of strange ducks. Heck we had to be that way just to take the step of faith, leaving behind the “normal” thinkers to do what we do. Then on top of that we became straight chiropractors. What was wrong with us? I’ll tell you what was wrong with us. We have this crazy notion in our heads that we can make a difference in peoples’ lives and by doing so we can actually make this a better world. Dreamers, idealists, crazy ones. Yes, we are all of the above, and then some. While there are many differences among us, ranging from our technics, to our office procedures, to our fee systems, our main desire should be to free the public from a paradigm that focuses on and reinforces a mechanistic world view that enslaves people to the allopathic mindset and interferes with their ability

Let Us Not Get Tired of Doing What is RightBy Tony DeMarco, D.C. • [email protected]

to get the big idea of chiropractic. Our big issue: how do we get

our practice members to get the big idea of chiropractic and come under lifetime care? As most of you know, the starting point for any new practice member should be a well thought out and delivered chiropractic orientation. Nothing can take the place of this. The difficult part comes after that. Educating and reinforcing our chiropractic principles on an every visit basis and doing it year after year.

We all can grow battle weary, even doing something we love. We are teaching an above, down, inside out philosophy to a below, up, outside in mindset. We need to be careful we do not become weary and lose our passion for delivering the message. Miriam Webster’s definition of weary is: depleted in strength or freshness.

Telling the chiropractic story is too important for us to become weary of telling it. Keep it fresh by finding different ways of saying the same thing, or just try to remember the things you used to say to your practice members. I was listening to an old Reggie Gold tape recently and after hearing some of Reggie’s analogies I had to ask myself why I didn’t say some of those things anymore. Those analogies are just as valid today as they were then. If you are anything like me, I had forgotten some of those things. Hearing them all over again brought a freshness to my telling the story. And, have you noticed that the more you tell the story to your practice members the better they will understand and the better you will feel about yourself and what you are doing. This will have a snowball

if they are contradictory in any way to your local statutes, your reasoning won’t stand in a court of law.

So that all being said… how do we determine if something we do or say in our practice is compatible with the phi-losophy and objective of Chiropractic? Shouldn’t it be a clear-cut decision, with unanimous agreement, (LOL) on where to draw the line? I think what makes that decision so difficult for many folks is the multitude of healthy, natural, intelligent habits or practices that are compat-ible with life. On the other hand, I think what makes that decision so easy for

other folks is thoughtless adherence to dogma… either their own, or somebody else’s.

My litmus test for “That’s Not Chiro-practic!” comes from somewhere more elemental, more reflective of the depth and breadth of humanity, than ONLY what’s written in books by Chiropractic scholars and authorities. Chiropractic is a life philosophy, and I believe that look-ing at life from a grand view provides us better answers than those we get from just dissecting principles, or sizing things up next to medicine.

There are two places I look for mea-suring up “That’s Not Chiropractic!,” and the first one is TRUST. And this is a big-gie, one that I think too many Chiroprac-tors lack. It’s one thing to talk about the magnificence of Innate Intelligence (II),

That’s Not Chiropractic!By Robert Lincoln, D.C. • [email protected]

It’s practically a battle cry in our pro-fession’s internal struggle with identity crisis. Many practices and products are frequently attacked as “not Chiropractic” – soft tissue techniques, modalities like lasers or electrical stimulation, spinal disc decompression, nutritional advice and selling nutritional products… even practices related to subluxation analysis and adjusting, such as palpation, muscle testing, X-rays, instrument adjusting, and the long-standing battle between upper cervical exclusive vs. full spine adjusting. Let’s not forget the ongoing argument of what a subluxation actu-ally is. And finally, I’ve seen arguments about how you structure your fee sys-tem (and this is putting aside insurance reimbursement) will determine if you’re TRULY practicing Chiropractic or not.

“That’s Not Chiropractic!” is presum-ably the biggest source of divisiveness and animosity among Chiropractors. This is especially true just within the more conservative, philosophical, and limited scope folks of the profession. Yet, without such an accusation or “check point,” there are many Chiropractors who could, and most certainly WOULD change Chiropractic into literally any-thing… even something that has noth-ing to do with life, health, or the human body.

Before I offer my views on what is or isn’t Chiropractic, let’s all recognize that the respective State Boards of Examin-ers (and other regulatory bodies around the world) ultimately decide the defini-tion and scope of Chiropractic where you are licensed to practice. Because there is no trademark or copyright for Chiropractic, and it has ended up as a licensed healthcare profession, then it is, by default, what the government says it is; everything else is just conversation. It doesn’t matter if your philosophical views are logical and indisputable…

but demonstrating trust for II with your actions and clinical procedures is what really distinguishes Chiropractic prac-tice from everything else. Even medi-cal surgeons have more trust in II than most Chiropractors! When a surgeon cuts into living tissue, removes or rear-ranges parts inside, then sutures things back together with the EXPECTATION that the patient’s body will mend things over and recover in a better state than before… that represents a stronger ac-ceptance of the principle of II than a lot of what I see “subluxation-centered” Chi-ropractors doing.

Among Stephenson’s 33 Principles, I believe the principle most overlooked and ignored by our profession is #27 – “Innate Intelligence is normal, and its function is always normal.” Now, what that means in practice objective terms is to locate and correct vertebral sub-luxations, NOT so that a patient’s body will behave more the way you think it should, but so that it can behave more the way IT wants to behave! How many of us are guilty of thinking a child’s fe-ver will automatically reduce faster once they get an adjustment – or even assum-ing that child is automatically subluxat-ed just because they have a fever, or any other symptom? If you are (be honest with yourself ), then I contend you either have some trust issues, or some faulty views of physiology.

The second place I look for measur-ing up “That’s Not Chiropractic!” is LOVE. I have much admiration for how many Chiropractors truly love what they do, and the love they have for the people in their offices. But love is more than just one specific kind of emotion we feel for another person, isn’t it? The way I love my son is different than the way I love my wife, and certainly different than the way I love my close friends. As any

“‘That’s Not Chiropractic!’ is presumably the biggest

source of divisiveness and animosity among

Chiropractors. ”

voted to defer the original December 2013 petition for renewal due to CCE’s non-compliance with over 40 criteria. The process of continuing the recognition of an existing agency is generally unremarkable, often requiring only 15 minutes or so of discussion. The proceeding involving CCE was anything but routine, with four hours of public comments, agency responses, and deliberations.

“The renewal comes as no surprise. It was the most likely outcome, however we showed up, spoke up and took excellent notes,” said Campanale. “The continued medicalization of chiropractic is completely unacceptable to IFCO and its affiliates and we will never give up this fight.” For more information go to The Chronicle of Chiropractic, the source for news on conservative, traditional chiropractic at http://chiropractic.prosepoint.net/78593

Thank you to Dr. Judy Campanale for her service to the chiropractic profession and her significant contribution to this article.

Philosophy and Practice...REALLY? Continued from page 3

intelligence of the living vertebrate body. PERIOD.

We are called to be MEDIATORS, “very philosophical and very practical” at the same time, as it is we WHO choose to consistently tell the story over and over and over and over again in as many ways as doable. Our individual practices are a “living paradox,” calling us to guard that sacred trust, as we realize that chiropractic restores the integrity of principle #32 which is the principle of coordination of action of the living body. Through the practice of chiropractic, the great gaps are overcome; physiological opposites are reconciled. A free FLOW of mental impulses from brain cell is transmitted via the nerve system to tissue cell coordinating ALL the cells of the living vertebrate body as each one expresses innate instructive information (innate forces).

ADIO is a NEW way of knowing the world, a way of knowing that has the power to MOVE people beyond symptoms and pain. It’s about chiropractors WHO choose to practice ADIO in ALL aspects of their lives. It requires a major “adjustment” to rewire our very own educated responses. It is hard work, so much so that most give up after their first futile attempts. Yet the goal is NOT success at all, ONLY the practice itself. The ONLY chiropractors WHO practice well are those WHO choose to keep at it regardless of the outcome, as they are detached from any and all outcomes in their practices.

HOW do you MOVE the practice members from WHERE they are in order to MOVE them toward the chiropractic objective? It is you WHO can choose to model and exemplify the ADIO viewpoint rather than academically

teach it. In other words, it is you WHO can choose to BE present during the office visit and EDUCE (draw out) from the practice member that which you SEE at the highest level WITHIN that particular practice member at that specific moment in time. Such SEEING, and that is what it is, gives us the capacity to be happy and happily alone, rooted in the 33 principles, comfortable with paradox and contradictions, and largely immune to majority thinking within the profession and its false promises.

It is up to you and me WHO can choose to pass this on to the next generation, by telling the story over and over and over and over again in as many ways as doable. It is you and me WHO can choose to hold the creative tensions of that specific encounter without condemnation. You and I are FREE to BE for that practice member WHO that practice member is at that specific moment. And believe me,

as it is you WHO choose to tell the story over and over and over and over again in as many ways as doable, it will EVENTUALLY resonate with the practice members and will inspire them to MOVE from point A to point B… step by step… toward the chiropractic objective

get off to a great start. There are 11,500 babies born every day and they all need chiropractic care. There are not enough chiropractors in the world to take care of everyone in just the state of New York! Let’s work our booties off improving the quality of life of mankind and let’s make an incredible living doing what we love so much. Does this sound like a glorious vision? Does this have the ability to em-power the human race? I say YES! This year I will be speaking around the coun-try with more details on the application of this vision in your office. I hope to see each of you at some point in my journey to share what we love. I love each of you in this vision of chiropractic!

Greetings colleagues! I hope this winter season finds you enjoying the pearls of wisdom and success. Like many of you, I am a student of life. I love to observe people living their passion through their actions and professions. We, in the non-therapeutic model of chiropractic, experience a passion and congruency that I rarely see in any other profession. Sometimes it is hard putting ourselves in the seat of the new person across from us waiting to hear how we as chiropractors can help them.

The correction of vertebral sublux-ations for a better expression of life is one of the most powerful ideas I have ever heard. It has a positive impact on the lives of everyone under consistent lifetime care. Our challenge is enlight-ening people to the “why” of what we do and getting them to share in the power of that vision. This concept builds huge practices. How do we help people buy into this vision?

First, let’s understand that chiro-practic is about life and anything posi-tive can happen. We cannot predict what will happen. We should never take away hope and we should always focus on the positive. Chiropractic promotes strength through the whole body and every one needs it. Every penny people spend in our offices goes toward mak-ing a positive change in their bodies and that is a POWERFUL statement friends!

parent will certainly understand, the love I have for my son is a profound caring, and worrying, and instinct to guide, help, and protect him as he grows through life – as well it should be. But the love I have for other peo-ple who are not my child does not have that same kind of protective-ness and desire to guide or dictate how they should be living, especially if that person is another adult. I find that not only disrespectful to them, but inappropriate to have that kind of relationship with another human being, especially in a doctor/patient (of any profession) relationship.

”I’m going to tell you how to live your life” represents parent-to-[dependent] child love. In a profes-sion that is supposed to base itself on the autonomy and beauty of indi-vidual living things, a parent-to-child relationship with someone who isn’t your child seems quite inappropriate to me. Chiropractic, at its philosophi-cal core, values autonomy. And in a doctor-to patient relationship, loving them to the point of a therapeutic outcome (using your methods to de-crease pain, reduce fevers, improve sickness, increase wellness) is usurp-ing the role of the II.

So then, “What is Chiropractic and what isn’t?” Perhaps we need to reframe that question to “How much do your practice objectives and proce-dures TRUST the Innate Intelligence of life? And does the LOVE you have for your patients encourage them to live their OWN life?”

effect and keep you and the practice fresh, allowing you to serve more people for a longer period time. Our primary mission in the office should be to develop a consistent procedure of educating our practice members. This should be the thing we concentrate on the most, before our technic, our report of findings, and even before we decide how and how much we collect in fees. And, it should go without saying, our philosophy should be incorporated into each of the above procedures making our procedures congruent with what we say in the chiropractic orientation and our continuing education of our practice members. Keeping true to our mission over the long haul is not without its rewards.

The Apostle Paul in Galatians 6:9 says this, “Let us not get tired of doing what is right, for after a while we will reap a harvest of blessing.”

The blessings are there for our taking and will be poured out abundantly into our laps if we stay true to our mission. It really is a sacred trust, guard it well.

The Garden State Chiropractic Society has recently joined the affinity program sponsored by TD Bank. The goal of the GSCS is to have a minimum of 50 accounts linked to this program.

When the GSCS reaches this goal, TD Bank will donate a minimum of $500 to our organization. The donation does not come out of your account.

You can link a new or existing account to the GSCS. The account may be savings, checking, certificate of deposit, etc. It may be a personal or a business account. Since TD Bank has offices in several states, you can invite family members and friends to participate in this program.

Simply visit your closest TD Bank branch and state you would like to link your account(s) to the Garden State Chiropractic Society. We greatly appreciate your support.
