Who am I? • Registered Clinical Scientist • STP: 2010 Genetics Cohort (2010-2013) - WMRGL • 2013-2014 Liverpool Regional Genetics Laboratory
– Registered with HCPC • 2014 - HSST in Genetics from the 1st cohort (direct entry) • Trainee representative
– Healthcare Science Implementation Network Group (HCSING) – HSST representative on Trainee Representative Group (NSHCS)

What happens at the end of STP? • MSc in Clinical Science (recognised academic qualification)
• HCPC registration
• Lawfully able to practice as a clinical scientist
• Eligible to apply for job as registered clinical scientist
• Make the transition from trainee to a clinical scientist

My Journey post STP Clinical Scientist Liverpool Regional Genetics Laboratory Roles & Responsibilities • Managing neuromuscular disorders (never worked on before)
• New techniques and diseases to learn • Authorising reports (for all sorts of disorders) • Training others (STPs and technologists) • Quality assurance
– EQA schemes – Making sure tests performing as they should (troubleshooting) – Ensure services meet best practice guidelines – Audits

My Journey post STP Clinical Scientist Liverpool RGL Roles & Responsibilities • Discussing cases with clinicians • MDT meetings – representing the laboratory • Laboratory restructuring (merging) • Improving current tests • Development of new tests • Duty scientist (triaging samples) & answer queries on all sorts • Managing technologist workload

Transition STP to registered scientist • More involvement with clinicians and patients • Increased responsibility/ accountability
– Cant hide behind trainee status – Less scrutiny of my work as now an independent practitioner – Being last person to check data/ reports
• Writing competencies maintaining competence (safe to practice) • Managing workloads (not just competencies) • Increase in lab management type tasks – training, audits, quality • More Rotas • Not just worrying about my work but about the team • People actually trust what you say
– More important that you are saying the right thing

• Clinical Scientist Liverpool (Nov 2013-Nov 2014) • Never just wanted a job – wanted a career – want to climb • Really enjoyed being a clinical scientist but I want to be a consultant • HSST was being talked about (but not actually started) • Applied at first opportunity and was successful

What is HSST? • Higher Specialist Scientist Training • ‘Develop a cohort of outstanding Clinical Scientists’ (Scaling the heights
2014) • Aim is to equip scientist to apply for consultant posts • 5 year programme • Part 1 : Years 1-2
– Core knowledge & understanding of specialty – fill any gaps
• Part 2: Years 3-5 – Consolidation of skills up to consultant level – Acquiring self-sufficiency in the specialty
