BULLISH ON KEENELAND NOVEMBER? Tom Van Meter, who has made a good living the past few years selling Thoroughbreds at sales events all over North America, has a little prediction regarding the upcoming November Breeding Stock Sales. It is a sim- ple philosophy, based on his life and sales experiences, a theory that he hopes will hold true once again. Van Meter's prediction? “Don't believe the pre-sale predic- tions. All the talk is gloom and doom. They're talking that the sale is going to be down this amount and that amount. You know what? Every time that happens, the market is always up, and I think that is what is going to happen this time,” said Van Meter, taking a few min- utes out of his pre-sales prep work to provide a little pre-sales pep talk. “I think it is going to be a good sale. People will always come to buy the good stuff. We know that, and that part of the market will be strong. But I think it is going to be strong across the board. I’m going out on a limb, but I think it will be up 10 percent or more all the way across. I think there will be a de- mand for horses at all levels, and I think people are going to walk away very pleasantly surprised. How's that for a prediction?” The annual Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sales, which, along with Fasig-Tipton Kentucky’s select bloodstock auction, are considered the barometer of the overall health of the breeding industry, begins today. It will run every day until the last horse is sold on Nov. 15, with the bidding kicking off at 10 a.m. daily. While Duncan Taylor of Taylor Made is also inclined to ignore the pre-sales prattle, he is not as bullish on the market. “I really don't think the sale is going to be as bad as most people think,” he said. “If ever a time that all the things lined up just perfect for a bad sale, I guess it would be now, but I just don't think it is going to be a disaster. My hope is that there are enough people out there, those who have been in the business for awhile, who think there will be an opportunity to get something really good and they'll show up to buy. The combination of those people and the fact that there are going to be fewer horses, give us some hope for a good, strong sale.” Preview cont. p2 STORMY PICK TOPS FASIG-TIPTON NOVEMBER With a final bid of $700,000, Grade I winner Stormy Pick (Storm Creek) was the top-priced lot at last night’s Fasig-Tipton November Selected Sale in Lexington, Kentucky. I N E W Y O R K IDISCO RICO RETIRED Four-year-old Disco Rico(Citidancer--Round It Off, by Apalachee) came out ofhis two-length victory in the Oct. 27 Lite The Fuse S. atLaurel with a fracture and has been retired, accordingto the Thoroughbred Times. The Maryland-bred coltwon nine of his 17 career starts, including this year’sGIII Maryland Breeders’ Cup H. and six additionalstakes; he was also second five times and third once, earning $507,244. The bay was purchased for $82,000as a juvenile at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’sMarch Sale. Stud plans have not yet been finalized.

IMUS LOSES ENTIRE BREEDERS’ CUP BANK-ROLL Radio talk show host Don Imus and his handi-capping partner, Mike Francesa, lost the entire $90,000bankroll that the National Thoroughbred Racing Associ-ation put up for them to bet, for charity, on the Breed-ers’ Cup, the Thoroughbred Times reports. As therewas a guaranteed minimum donation no matter theoutcome of the duo’s wagers, the NTRA will ante up anadditional $50,000 for the NTRA Charities-New YorkHeroes Fund. Despite the fact that Imus and Francesafailed to cash even one ticket, NTRA spokesman EricWing told Thoroughbred Times that the promotionachieved it’s purpose of “raising awareness for theHeroes Fund and promoting the World ThoroughbredChampionships.” Wing added, “We are still verypleased with how it all worked out. At times, it’s hardto quantify, but you know when you are dealing withImus and Francesa that you get your money’s worthand then some. It pervades their conversation and goeswell beyond the mere reading of a commercial spot.”

GRADE I WINS ON DIRT and TURF

P N E W S T O D A Y P

Keeneland November: Bucking Bearish Trends... Despite Van Meter’s optimistic prediction, the eventsof 2001 have not been kind to the Thoroughbred indus-try. Since the spring, the horse business has been ham-mered by a series of unfortunate events. The first blastcame back in May, when it was determined that anoutbreak of Mare Reproductive Loss Syndrome wascausing many of the world’s best Thoroughbred maresto abort, and many others to not get pregnant. That isone of the reasons the number of mares and weanlingsentered in this year's fall sales have declined. The sec-ond hit came when the North American economy expe-rienced an overall slowdown that has negatively im-pacted the stock market and many potential bloodstock buyers. The third crisis came just about a month ago,one day into the Keeneland September Yearling Sales, when the World Trade Center and the Pentagon wereattacked and, subsequently, the world was spun into awar on terrorism that continues today. The combinationof all these factors have left many people wonderingabout the future of the Thoroughbred industry, andworried that the business may join the world's econ-omy in a dramatic downturn. “People have been reluc-tant to travel,” Van Meter said. “Some people are hold-ing onto their money a little tighter. You can see the impact of both of those things [at the sales]...there maynot be as many of the foreign interests here to look andbuy. But I think the fact that there are fewer horses inthe sales will definitely help overall. There is quality inthe sale.”

Quality Over Quanitity... There is not, however, the quantity in this year’ssale. Last year, Keeneland offered 5,111 lots. This year, the catalogue has 4,116. But Keeneland will have morethan its share of top attractions. The list of glamourgirls includes Grade I winners Lazy Slusan, DreamsGalore, Golden Ballet and Gourmet Girl. Cee's Song, dam of 2000 Horse of the Year Tiznow, will be offeredcarrying a full brother to the two-time Breeders' CupClassic hero. Lost the Code, dam of 2001 Breeders'Cup Sprint winner Squirtle Squirt, will also be for sale,in foal to Cat Thief. A half brother to Squirtle Squirt, byLangfuhr, is also listed in the catalogues. Keenelandwill offer broodmares who are in foal to some of theworld's most respected and high-priced stallions, in-cluding the likes of A.P. Indy, Danehill, Danzig, DeputyMinister, Fusaichi Pegasus, Giant's Causeway, GoneWest, Kingmambo, Lemon Drop Kid, Saint Ballado,Seattle Slew, Seeking the Gold, Storm Cat, ThunderGulch, and the recently deceased Nureyev and Unbridled.

Well-bred Weanlings... The weanlings on offer include sons and daughtersby A.P. Indy, Deputy Minister, Exploit, Forestry, GoneWest, Kingmambo, Sadler's Wells, Saint Ballado, Seek-ing the Gold, Storm Cat, Stravinsky, Thunder Gulch andUnbridled. Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland’s newest direc-tor of sales, said, “We're seeing many positive signs, including strong interest among both domestic andinternational buyers. We're guardedly optimistic. Obvi-ously, there are some unusual factors in this year'ssale, but we're ready. The consignors are ready. Hope-fully, the buyers will be ready.”

24 LINE UP FOR MELBOURNE CUP Although void of any obvious superstars, Tuesday’srunning of the Melbourne Cup appears to be a verycompetitive event on paper. Sky Heights (NZ) (Zabeel{NZ}) showed modest form earlier this fall, but showedgreat improvement last time in a brilliant come-from-behind second-place finish in the Oct. 20 G1 CaulfieldCup. Persian Punch (Ire) (Persian Heights {GB}), whoran third in this race back in 1998, reeled off two winsin Britain this summer, including the Aug. 2 G2 Good-wood Cup. Most recently, the nine-year-old was anunlucky fourth in the G1 Irish St Leger Sept. 15 at TheCurragh, a race that produced 1993 Melbourne Cupwinner Vintage Crop (Ire). The eight-time group winneris most likely making the final start in a career whichhas spanned six seasons and 42 starts. Ethereal (NZ)(Rhythm), one of four mares in the 24-horse field, hasgained valuable support following her impressive defeatof 17 others in the Caulfield Cup. The 4-1 morning-linefavorite, winner of the G1 Queensland Oaks this sum-mer, looks for the third Group 1 win of her career. Givethe Slip (GB) (Slip Anchor {GB}), who gained fame asthe pacesetter for stable mate Fantastic Light, alongwith entrymate Marienbard (Ire) (Caerleon), will attemptto give Team Godolphin its first Melbourne Cup victoryafter having been blanked out for the past four years.Marienbard, second in the G2 Grand Prix de DeauvilleAug. 26 and third behind Vinnie Roe (Ire) in the G1 IrishSt Leger last time, has drawn jockey Frankie Dettorihalf-way around the world for the ride, so he must beconsidered an honest threat. Though secondbest last time to Siphonic in the GII Breeders’ Futurityat Keeneland Oct. 6, he was 12 lengths clear of therest of the field that day and got plenty of support fromthe bettors here. Bumped at the start, the bay colttracked three lengths off the fast splits of :21 4/5 and:44 flat set by Showmeitall (All Gone). Five wide on theturn, he took over after three quarters and proved muchthe best. Request for Parole, also bumped at the start, ran on late for second, but never challenged the winner. “Mark [Guidry]’s horse [Showmeitall] was all the speedin the race, so I just laid off him,” commented winningjockey Tony D’Amico. “The horse relaxed really nice forme and I didn't move. I probably had Mark at any timeand I didn't see any shadows coming, so I just keptsitting and sitting. I took a peek over my shoulder andsaw Robby[Albarado]’s horse [Janadel] coming. FIRST FOALS Coolmore always seems to have one of the toptwo commercial prospects every time a group ofstallions makes its first sales appearances, and thisyear's November sale is no exception--the two lead-ers in number of Book 1 foals are Ashford’s(Coolmore’s American arm) Stravinsky and TaylorMade's Forestry, with 12 each. There's certainlybeen a noticeable drop in the number of weanlingscatalogued by the leading commercial prospects. Lastyear, in a 14-day, seven-catalogue November sale, there were six stallions (three from Ashford) with25+ weanlings from their first crops throughout thewhole sale. This year, there is one--Stravinsky, with30. Last year, Tale of the Cat had 39 catalogued, andGrand Slam had 37. Twenty stallions who stand at14 different farms have 10 or more weanlings cata-logued throughout the sale. Last year there were 24.Six of this year’s 20 are by Storm Cat, headlined byTaylor Made's Bob Baffert-trained duo of top sprinterForestry (17 in the sale) and unbeaten two-year-oldExploit (14). Forestry, raced by Aaron and Marie Jones, won the GI King's Bishop; Exploit, who raced for Bob andBeverly Lewis, was a Grade II winner at two andthree in an abbreviated six-race career. There are also four American Classic winnersamong the 20, including the three successive win-ners of the Kentucky Derby/Preakness double--SilverCharm (‘97, 15 in the sale); Real Quiet (‘98, 12); andCharismatic (‘99, 11). Victory Gallop, the ‘98Belmont winner, has 17. Interestingly, only seven ofthe 55 foals catalogued by these four are in Book 1.

FIRST MARES IN FOAL In this group, Coolmore's competing with itself. Ash-ford now stands the two stallions with the most maresin foal in the sale, Giant's Causeway (20) and FusaichiPegasus (17)--but Giant's Causeway stood in Irelandthis year. Some shipping companies had good contracts. With estimates that up to 30 percent of the 2002Kentucky foal crop was lost to Mare Reproductive LossSyndrome, it's perhaps not surprising that significantlyfewer stallions who covered for the first time earlierthis year have double-digit numbers of mares in foal inthe Keeneland November catalogue; nor, perhaps, thatthe leader didn't stand in Kentucky. In 2000, therewere 17 stallions with 10+ mares catalogued in foal inthe November sale; this year, there are just seven. Thetwo Ashford headliners have 37 mares in foal betweenthem in the sale, and all 37 are in Book 1.
