Dear Friends,

The words from Psalm 119 at some point in the sixties or seventies were set to music, and so are engrained in my brain as a song; a song that arises easily to mind. You know how that works, a tune or a melody lives in your brain and for some unknown reason you are humming the tune or even walking through Target singing it! This song is one of those songs for me.

As I sit down to write this last article for the “Call to Worship” these words carried by their tune sprang to mind. I love the image these words evoke.

Imagine someone walking a trail in the pitch dark. Without light, the person cannot see a thing. So they are holding a lamp to light the path and find their way.

Now, we must know that unlike a modern flashlight, a lamp only cast light for a short distance around the person’s feet that was carrying it. We are used to being able to shine a flashlight’s beam ahead of us, and wherever we decide to point it. Lamps do not work that way. That is why in paintings you see a person holding a lamp up high, for then its light shines in a brighter circle. When walking in the dark by the light of a lamp a person has to focus on their next step or two rather than looking ahead and planning one’s way ahead.

Like the light of a lamp, God’s word lights our way. God is the one who shows us where our next steps should be. God guides us in the way we should go. God wants to be our guide, our light for the paths of the earth.

But, we need to remember to take his lamp with us, we need to decide to walk in his light. In the summer of 1995 I worked at Wilderness Canoe Base on Seagull Lake at the very end of the Gunflint trail. The camp is located on two islands right on the edge of the Boundary Waters. In those days, its cabins were nestled amongst the trees and boulders of the forest and were connected by winding, uneven footpaths. These paths were beautiful to walk on during the

day, but at night were treacherous unless you had a light.

One night I was up late talking (can you imagine that?!) in the main lodge. When it came time to walk back to my cabin I realized that I had forgot to bring along my headlamp.

“Oh, well.” I thought, “I know the way.”

That night there was no moon and under the trees the forest floor was inky black. I could not see anything, not even my non-proverbial hand in front of my eyes. By the time I had literally crawled half-way down the path to my cabin I was praying to find my way, while cursing myself for having left my headlamp next to my bunk.

Life can be like my dark journey. Too many of us have found ourselves crawling amongst the rocks and roots of life’s path, feeling our way forward on our hands and knees, not able to see our next step for the lack of a guiding light. This is not necessary, and it is foolish.

God has given us light, Jesus is our light. Jesus wants to be our guide in life. And God gives us a lamp, his word to guide us on our way.

I pray that each day, you open your eyes to Jesus’ light. I pray that you go to God’s word for nourishment, strength, and guidance for your daily walk. I pray that you call upon Jesus to lead you forward in life. Let the Lord be your lamp and light!

I want to thank each of you for the part you have played in my life and ministry here at United in Christ Lutheran Church. The Lord gives us one

another upon life’s journey so that we might know community and love that we will be the church together. Though we will not be worshiping within the same four walls anymore, we will continue to be the church together, now and forever in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Go with God following the light of Christ! We will see each other again, here on earth, or in Jesus’s presence in heaven.Amen.

In Christ’s love, Pastor Joel

June 2015

Dear United in Christ, We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your wonderful send-off on Sunday, May 17. It was a special day that we will remember forever! Thank you for your shared tears, smiles, words of encouragement, and stories. Thank you for the financial gifts as well; they will help us in our transition to Norway.  I would love to write each one of you a personal note of thanks, but time has cut this task short, so you will have to know how thankful we are via the "Call to Worship"!  You have shaped our lives and we are different because of your presence. We would be less without you. Thank you for being people of grace, love, and Christ's presence. May God bless and keep you until we meet again.  In Christ's love and with Hearts of Deep Gratitude,Pastor Emily, Pastor Joel, Nestor, and Johan

BURGER BASH SUCCESS

The Burger Bash held on May 6 was a resounding success!  The idea for this actually came as a result of some responses to the survey conducted a few months ago.

Youth involvement, community outreach, generational fellowship, and potential new membership all were accomplished.  And with over $1,100 being raised, our church budget benefited as well. Making this all happen was definitely a group effort. Many thanks go out to those who donated items, arranged the music and lawn games, served the food, cleaned up afterwards, and of course partook in the festivities.  We will be doing another meal like this in the fall (burgers or possibly pasta?). So if you have any ideas to make this event even better, please keep an eye on the bulletin and newsletter for when the planning starts.  Thank you again to all who participated!

DAY CAMP INFORMATIONDay Camp will be held this year, Monday through Friday, June 22-26, so please mark your calendars as you plan your summer! You won’t

want to miss this week of fun, fellowship, out-door time, games, learning about Jesus, and making new friends. Counselors from Voya-geurs Lutheran Ministry will lead the week.

Lots of coordinating is needed as things come together to welcome the counselors and make sure all the details of each day are completed. If you are able to be a part of this week, whether it is donating snacks, providing an evening meal to the counselors, assisting during the day, driving the 4-6 graders to their service project, or being on hand for last minute help, we would appreciate it so much.

Most of the details of this camping ministry have been taken care of. But it requires extra hands and help for the week to go as smoothly as possible. Registration forms are attached. Please fill one out for each child and turn it in as soon as possible.

The cost of camp is $25 for the whole week. This is an amazing deal for 27 hours of camp! We want as many people as possible to attend camp during this week. If finances are an issue for you, we don’t want them to be, so let us know and come to camp!

NE MN SYNOD JOURNEY AND

NATIONAL YOUTH GATHERING

June 2015

Late in the evening of July 10, ten youth and two adults from United in Christ Lutheran will board a bus with others from our area. We will be heading off to the NE MN Synod Journey and National ELCA Youth Gathering. The first three days will be spent in Michigan and staying overnight in Lansing at Michigan State Univer-sity. Two of these days we will be volunteering on service projects. This could include anything from picking up litter, to pruning vegetation, painting, boarding up abandoned buildings, or other physical work.

One day in Detroit we will learn about the local culture and lifestyle. Hopefully the youth will be able to spend time with local youth learning from them and sharing their faith.

July 15 the ten buses will load and head off to Detroit for the National ELCA Youth Gathering. We will be staying in hotels and bussed to inner Detroit for daily activities. One day will again be a service day called, Proclaim Justice. Again we will be in the community of Detroit under-taking a variety of projects. The other two days will be spent at the Cobo Center. One of those days is Proclaim Story where we will spend sharing our faith stories. The other day is Proclaim Community where the youth can have fun learning how the ELCA shares and works all across the world. The youth will also be able to spend time just having fun at a huge sports area. Other possibilities include being a blood donor (with parental approval) or donating hair to children who have hair loss because of different situations.

Each evening will be spent at Ford Field amongst 30,000 youth. There will be different speakers each evening, music, and a chance to enjoy meeting other groups.Sunday morning, July 19, will be our final worship service and we will be traveling back to Minnesota with a very late night arrival.

Youth from United in Christ who will be attend-ing and who have been preparing since last September are Joey Addy, Sam Albrecht, Jared

Celley, Margo Giese, Emily Haugen, Sawyer Hill, Sydney Hill, Garret Kokal, Samantha Klander, and Suvi Rova. The adult leaders are Deb Hendrickson and Ali Hill. A special thank you goes to Ali Hill for just recently agreeing to be a chaperone to help make this an unforget-table event for our senior high youth!

Thank you to members of United in Christ for your encouragement and support, including fund-raising support. We look forward to shar-ing our adventure once we return. And most of all, please keep us all in your prayers during this event.

The participants of 2015 National ELCA Youth Gathering

National YouthGathering Fundraisers

This July 4 we will continue to raise money for the youth trip to the National Youth Gathering in Detroit. Opportunities will be available to raise money by helping with the Eveleth “Fourth of July” parade and the Gilbert “Fourth of July Kiddie” parade canteen. If youth have to march with the band, their parents or siblings can work in their place. These are two important fundraisers!

Also, the “Dog House” at Super One Foods South in Virginia will be run by our youth on Land of the Loon weekend. When you stop for groceries, grab a hot dog or brat and beverage to support our youth. Spread the word!

Thank you to

each person and/or family who has honored a loved one recently with a gift in honor of or in

For Fun

Feeling footloose and frisky, a featherbrained fellow forced his fond father to fork over the farthings and flew far to foreign fields and frittered his fortune, feasting fabulously with faithless friends.

Fleeced by his fellows in folly and facing famine, the fellow floundered as a feed-flinger in a filthy farm. Fairly famished, he fain would have filled his frame with foraged food from fodder fragments. “Fooey, my father’s flunkies fare far finer!”

The frazzled fugitive forlornly fumbled, frankly facing facts. He fled forthwith to his family. Falling at his father’s feet, he forlornly fumbled, “Father, I’ve fruitlessly forfeited family favor.”

The farsighted father, forestalling further flinching, frantically flagged his flunkies to fetch a fatling from the flock and fix a feast. The fugitive’s fault-finding brother frowned on fickle forgiveness of the former folderol. But the faithful father figured, “Filial fidelity is fine, but the fugitive is found! What forbids fervent festivity? Let flags be unfurled! Let fanfares flair!”

“Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you.” Psalm 55:22

I recall this verse many times in my daily life. It comes to

mind especially as Pastor Joel and Pastor Emily, Nestor, and Johan are traveling to Norway as they accepted God’s call to spread his Word and minister there. Our prayers are with them for a safe voyage and as they experience many new adventures.

Women of the ELCA will be experiencing a little summer respite after the NE MN Conference is over on June 13. Lots of information will be shared on the bulletin board in the social hall.

Melissa Gulan and Susan Anderson deserve much credit and thank you for a great job of organizing the latest pasty sale. Also, thanks to each volunteer who gave of their time. The proceeds will be given to help fund the adults and youth traveling to the ELCA National Youth Gathering in July.

May 12 about 70 women enjoyed a special catered spring banquet by Northgate Café. Shannon Gunderson entertained with her musical selections that spanned about 100 years. Thank you, Shannon. Thanks to Stancy for making the arrangements, thanks to Pat for sharing a poem about girlfriends, and thanks for the donations of door prizes.

A correction from the May recipe of blueberry muffins should include 1 teaspoon baking powder. (That is a very old recipe, so they may mean ½ teaspoon of the double action baking power!?)Here is a recipe from 1961 Women of Concordia Lutheran Cookbook.

Swedish Meatballs (8 servings)1 lb. ground beef½ lb. ground pork½ teaspoon allspice1 small onion (grated)1 cup bread crumbs2/3 cup cream1 egg1 teaspoon salt½ teaspoon black pepper

Mix all ingredients and roll into balls. Fry in fat until brown! Add a small amount of water and let simmer on a very low heat for about 30 minutes. Also, may be baked in a covered casserole dish in the oven at 325 degrees.

If any of the circles have news to share, please call Stancy at 744-2639.

Your sisters in Christ, Elaine Edwardson, 744-9933Stancy Walters, 741-2639

The next scheduled blood drive will be held at the church on Mon., July 20, from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. If you are willing and available to give blood, please call Bonnie Keller and volunteer at 744-2875.

Thanks in advance for helping save someone’s life with your donation of blood. All types of blood needed! What a wonderful gift to give. The gift of life to someone struggling with a major health issue.

MINISTRY

COMMITTEE

June 2015

Avoid Mosquito Bites and West Nile Virus

Take the commonsense steps below to reduce your risk:

Avoid mosquito bites Clean out mosquitoes from the places where you

live, work, and play Help your community control the disease

Something to remember: The chance that any one person is going to become ill from a single mosquito bite remains low. The risk of severe illness and death is highest for people over 50 years old, although people of all ages can become ill.

Avoid Mosquito BitesUse Insect Repellent Apply insect repellent to exposed skin and clothing when you go outdoors. According to the CDC, insect repellents that contain DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide), picaridin (KBR 3023), and IR3535 as well as some oil of lemon, eucalyptus, and para-menthane-diol products usually provide longer protection than insect repellents contain-ing different active ingredients. Even a short time outdoors can be long enough to get a mosquito bite.

Always follow the product label's instructions for use. Look for a graphic created by the Environ-mental Protection Agency that indicates how long the product will protect you from tick and mosquito bites. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that DEET should not be used on children younger than 2 months old. Clothing Can Help Reduce Mosquito Bites When possible, wear long sleeves, long pants,

and socks when outdoors. Mosquitoes may bite through thin clothing, so spraying clothes with repellent will give extra protection. Don't apply repellents containing the ingredient permethrin directly to skin. Permethrin should only be used on clothes, shoes, bed netting, and camping gear. Do not spray repellent containing DEET on the skin under your clothing.

Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours Dusk and dawn are peak mosquito biting times for many species of mosquitoes. Take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing during evening and early morning -- or consider avoiding outdoor activities during these times. But keep in mind that these are not the only time that mosquitos bite. For instance the tiger mosquito, which was accidentally introduced into the United States, is one that's quite active during the day.

Mosquito-Proof Your HomeDrain Standing Water Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Limit the number of places around your home for mosquitoes to breed by getting rid of items that hold water, such as empty trash cans or unused children's toys.

Install or Repair Screens Some mosquitoes like to come indoors. Keep them outside by having well-fitting screens on both windows and doors.

Help Your Community Fight West Nile VirusReport Dead Birds to Local Authorities Dead birds may be a sign that West Nile virus is circulating between birds and the mosquitoes in an area. More than 130 species of birds are known to have been infected with West Nile virus, though not all infected birds will die. It's important to remember that birds die from many other causes besides West Nile virus.By reporting dead birds to state and local health departments, you can play an important role in monitoring West Nile virus. State and local agencies have different policies for collecting and testing birds.
