Introduction

As part of a review of the quality of data being provided to NSW Health by Sterilizing Departments, the Sterilizing

Services Key Performance Indicators (KPI) Reference Group identified wide variations in the application of weights to

activity data across the State. Accordingly KPI comparison of peer hospitals was problematic. The weighting table used

had been developed seven years ago and the weighting table is now inadequate and open to individual interpretation.

Since the development of the weighting table there have been changes in technology, in instrument and equipment

design, and changes to standards and expectations of Services provided by the Sterilizing Services Department, requiring

a review of the table.

The review of the weights has been undertaken by the KPI Reference Group and a comprehensive weighting

identification tool developed to assist hospital Sterilizing Departments in the applying of weights consistently for NSW

Health hospital Sterilizing Departments.

Flexible Scopes

When the weighting table was first developed a weighting of 10 was allocated to Telescopes, most of which were rigid. With the introduction of more complex scopes a weighting of 10 does not represent the complexity of the process which includes leak testing and brushing and flushing of Channels. Weighting for Flexible telescopes with no channel will remain at 10. Weighting for Flexible Scopes with channels and Valves will be calculated as 10 plus an additional 10 for each channel or valve which must be brushed.

Loan Sets

In 2003 four Sterilizing KPI committee members, two

from Principal Referral Hospitals and one from a Major

Non Metropolitan Hospital, carried out a project to

develop weightings for Loan Set Components.

Nine (9) different Loan Sets were compared and weights

were applied to each of the components according to

the weighting table. It was realised due to loan sets

constantly changing because of Surgeon preference and

Patient needs, Sterilizing Departments could not apply

the different weightings each time sets were processed.

Therefore the best option was to calculate the mean

average for the sets.

The result was a weight of 6 to be applied when the

sets were checked in and processed and the weight

was to be applied again when they were processed and

dispatched.

Weight 6 per Component

Un-Opened and Un-Used Loan Sets

Recently there has been an increase in the number of

sets being ordered, processed and not used. These sets

are not reprocessed and are dispatched back to the

Company. A weighting of 2 is to be applied to each component.

Checking of Prosthesis

The checking in of the Prosthesis was not considered in

2003, however since that time some Sterilizing Services

are responsible for this process.

A Weighting of 2 per component, is to be applied when received in and dispatched out.
