Stepping up to the Challenge

Approximately 30 participants will be selected from government, education, business, nonprofit, entrepreneurial, and other professional areas. Participants must reside or work in Jefferson County.

Tuition is $900 (there will be a $50 discount for paid West Chamber members). Tuition includes all expenses for the overnight retreat (double occupancy), course materials, graduation, and meals for each monthly session. Limited scholarships are available based on need.

Applications for Leadership Jefferson County must be received by Friday, June 24, 2016.

needed to meet the demands of tomorrow.

Leadership Jefferson County

The Leadership Jefferson County (LJC) program was developed in 1985 by the Board of Directors of what is now The West Chamber. It was designed to develop leadership potential within the community to meet the demands of tomorrow.

LJC identifies people who are emerging leaders within the Jefferson County area and gives them a broader view of civic leadership through direct contact with the people and institutions that shape the community.

It begins in September and continues through June. Monthly, full-day sessions expose participants to local and state government, health, education, arts, justice, business, nonprofit and human services. LJC participants may expand their knowledge and influence in their community through various contacts and guest speakers.

LJC does not advocate specific programs or particular solutions. Instead, the success of this program is measured by its positive effect on the participants, their organizations and the community.

Schedule 2016-2017

September 16-17, 2016 Orientation/Retreat Class members participate in leadership and team building workshops. Interactive sessions develop relationships and serve as a catalyst for leadership development throughout the rest of the 10-month program.

October 7, 2016 Human Services DayParticipants learn about the important role human service agencies and nonprofit organizations play in the overall success of the county and its residents.

November 11, 2016 Education DayCritical trends that affect K-12 and higher education, the schools impact on the county and the commitment needed from all aspects of the community is vetted.

December 9, 2016 Art DayLearn how the arts and creative industries build community, strengthen the economy and contribute to creative solutions.

January 13, 2017 Justice Day Experience elements of the criminal justice system through a police ride-along, tour of the county jail and discussions of issues facing the justice system.

February 10, 2017, City DayThe class meets elected officials and leaders of local municipalities and hears presentations on city history, municipal operations, and significant policy issues.

March 8, 2017 (2nd Wednesday) State Government DayMeet with State legislators and other state leaders; examine how state government works, and a perspective on state challenges and opportunities.

April 14, 2017, Business DayCorporate cultures, business ethics, economic development, technology, and entrepreneurship is presented while learning about current trends and future leadership styles necessary to succeed.

May 12, 2017, County/Regional Government DayGrowth, development, intergovernmental cooperation, environmental impacts, urban versus rural challenges, and resources/services are addressed.

June 9, 2017, Health Day Health concerns and issues from prevention to hospitalization are addressed along with visits to various Jefferson County health care facilities.

June 15, 2017, (Thursday evening) GraduationGraduation is an opportunity to celebrate the year’s journey with family, friends, and colleagues.

• Identify and develop community leaders• Acquaint these leaders with community needs,

issues, and potential solutions• Give leaders an opportunity to meet other leaders

and challenge them all to greater community involvement

• Educate leaders about various aspects of the community

The purpose of Leadership Jefferson County is reflected in its goals:

Participants are selected based on LJC program criteria. Candidates not initially selected are encouraged to reapply for the program. LJC program candidates should be concerned about the issues affecting the greater Denver area and be committed to personal involvement in shaping the future. Participants and their organizations must be willing to invest the necessary time to participate in the program.
