Step 1 Step 2 Step 3
“Books That Fit” “Ten Minutes a Day “One Skill at a Time“
What does this look like at home? • Each student will be provided with a book bag that they
will be bringing to and from school.
• In each book bag: • 1-10 books “At your child’s reading level” • A folder with a reading log• A skills card in the folder with the power words and skills your child is working on
Step 1- Books That Fit Students will be assessed by their teacher and given a color level that will on their level. Each night students will be bringing home books on their level and skill cards with skills they need to work on to get to the next level.
Step 2- Ten Minutes a DayOur program asks parents to spend just 10 minutes a day listening to their child read from “Books That Fit.” With just 10 minutes a day, your child will progress steadily and naturally to become an independent reader. As the parent, your active role will bring you perfectly in tune to the individual needs of your child.
Horizon’s goal: • 30 minutes at school• 30 minutes at home
Together, you are creating a nurturing environment to support your child in becoming
a successful avid reader—for life.
Step 3- One Skill at a Time• With American Reading at Home, children learn to master
just one new skill at a time—we call each skill a “Power Goal”—which accelerates learning.
• At each reading level, there are 1-3 Power Goals that your child will master while reading books designed to help them with these specific skills.
What are the steps?
•1 step = 15 minutes of reading•Every students daily goal: • 2 steps= 30 minutes of reading at school• 2 steps = 30 minutes of reading at home

Close Reading• The process we teach students to achieve deep
comprehension• Close reading allows us to utilize a variety of Common
Core Standards• Students read a variety of short reading passages• Reading passages are a variety of fiction and non-fiction• Reading passages often align with our Science and
Social Studies content• We spend two weeks on each article to give students
the time necessary to build deeper understanding of content
Close Reading• There are 3 steps: Read for flow
-Circle words to be clarified-Use context clues to clarify the meaning of unknown words
Read for purpose-Students will apply different comprehension strategies to make sense of
text-Students will find evidence within text to answer questions about key
detailsCreate something new
-Students will demonstrate their comprehension of text in different forms-Students will demonstrate comprehension through writing, art, and
sometimes drama/theatre
At Horizon we are building a community of readers
