Introduction

There are many different kinds of maps. A world map shows us the position of different countries. We use a road map or street map to help us travel to different places. A town or city map shows us the location of squares, rivers, parks, and important buildings. City maps often use symbols or icons to show the location of airports, bus stations, restaurants, cafés, shops, and other interesting places.

2 Work in groups. Follow the steps to create a map for an imaginary town. Take turns making notes.

Step 2 Make a list of places and services ■ Are there any special places in your town – a theme

park, a stadium, … ?■ Make a list of other places and services to include –

a shopping mall, a museum, schools …■ Draw icons for the places on your list.

Futuretown has a fantastic theme park.

There’s a science museum and a library.

The information office is between the main square and the library.

Excuse me. How do I get to the museum?

Go straight on ... .

Turn left/right.

Take the first/second … left/right.

It’s on the left/right.

Can you tell me how to get to the theme park, please?

It’s just around the corner.

You can’t miss it.
