What you've always wanted to know about Venturing, but were afraid to ask. This session is for new or future youth & adult Leaders. It will cover recruiting, chartering, youth-run leadership, activities, by-laws, awards, high adventure, & more!

VC-02 1 Hour

How to Start a Venturing Crew

Learn from the experts…people who have done it. What does it take to start a new crew? How did they do it? What are some things you can to do to successfully start a crew? There will be a short overview on what is needed to start a crew and then both youth and adults will share their experiences on starting their crews. This is a very interactive course and questions are encouraged.

VC-03 1 Hour Is your crew dying? Want to fix it?

Is your Crew a revolving door with ever-changing membership? Is it always that way? We’ll discuss the unique challenges & opportunities Venturing Crews present, the pitfalls Crews should avoid, & how to keep the Crew going despite all of this. Some Crews successfully keep youth members involved after high school and during college, until they transition into adult leadership. Learn how to keep these youth involved, and how to help them make the transition to Associate Advisor when they reach the age of 21. Learn & share ideas with other Crews!

VC-04 1 Hour Crew Program Planning*NEW*

(Part 3 of 3 of the What's New in Venturing Series) Research conducted by Eli Lilly shows that a common element of strong units is they all have a good annual program planned a year in advance that is then shared with all families in the form of a calendar. The important result of a shared annual program calendar is that your crew will attract more families and Venturers will stay involved longer. If your youth officers are not doing this, you're cheating them out of the most important part of the program.

This course is part of the new Venturing Awards Program and satisfies the requirements for the Venturing Award. Teens deal with a lot of challenges these days and this course discusses some of the more serious ones including, Suicide Prevention, Internet Safety and Sexual Harassment, among others.

How to Develop Your Troop, Crew and Ship Youth Leaders

Overview of training opportunities for older youth and adults. Discussion of age appropriate training programs and the youth training continuum for Scouts, Venturers and Sea Scouts. Topics will include ILST, ILSC, ILSS, Kodiak Challenge, NYLT, SEAL, NAYLE, Wood Badge, Powder Horn, PTC as well as all of the Venturing Trainings required as part of the awards program.

Learn how to put the WOW into your Units activities by actually experiencing it. Discover the resources that will bring your outdoor activities to life for the youth in your troop, ship or crew.

VC-11 1 Hour Eve on the Trail (Female Youth Only)

Have you ever wondered about the rules, requirements and needs for going camping or other events with a Co-ed crew? How do you arrange your co-ed crew by age, gender or other needs? The requirements of health and hygiene are different in the outdoors for young men and young women. Learn why and how only a little additional planning will enhance the total experience for everyone. Remember, the world is co-ed, and Venturing is just a good example. This course will cover the intricacies of co-ed camping and BSA policies.

VC-12 3 Hours Sea Scout Adult Leader Basic Training

This session is an important early step in training Sea Scout leaders in the skills and attributes necessary to be an effective advisor in the Ship's service delivery to youth. It is intended primarily to enhance individual knowledge of and connectivity with the BSA strategic plan, program, and resources, as well as emphasizing personal skills necessary for youth development in the Sea Scout program.

VC-13 6 Hours Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews: ILSC

This course is designed to be conducted by the Venturing Crew Officers (with the support of the Crew Advisor) to teach leadership skills to their Crew members. Youth Officers are invited to take this training, so they can do the training for their own Crew. Completion of this training is a requirement for participation in Kodiak, and for youth working on the Discovery Award. During this time, the presenters will also be showing how to present the course to their own units. 6 Hour Course: 9:00 AM – 2:50 PM

VC-14 5 Hours Kodiak Challenge Course Director’s Conference A training program for Troops, Crews and Ships. The Kodiak Challenge course combines the elements of leadership, planning and service to others. Servant leadership is a philosophy that teaches the leader to work with and through a team to accomplish the mission. Come learn to put on this challenging course for the youth of your crew, district or council. (5-Hour Course: 9:00am-1:50pm)

Roundtable Discussion of Day’s Learning

Adult Leader Bridge Session*NEW*

(Part 1 of 3 of the What's New in Venturing Series) - Struggling to keep up with all of the changes we saw in Venturing in 2014? Here is your chance to get caught up. This course (along with the other two in the series) is perfect for adults who went through training prior to June 2014, to augment your previous training. You will receive a nice overview of the changes from Regional Officers who have been part of the integration of these changes.

The Crew Committee Challenge is designed for crew committee members and becomes the course (along with the Venturing version of Youth Protection training) crew committee members need to be considered “trained.”

CSC-1 1 Hour Looking for new ideas for Pack Themes for your Cub Scout program? Something that will excite both the Cubs and the Leaders? This course will have you thinking "outside the box" at future pack events!

Growing the Pack

CSC-2 1 Hour We're not just talking increasing the unit's membership number (but will touch on that too), we're looking at ways to encourage boys to wear their uniforms properly, ensure parent participation, ideas for all year recruitment, getting leasders in your unit trained and retaining them and resources to help along the journey. There will be some of the best tips of growing your pack into a strong successful unit.

History and Lore

CSC-3 1 Hour This session will focus on the history of Scouting, particularly Cub Scouting had how it relates to the Boy Scout Program. It will explain how Rudyard Kipling's "Jungle Book" is woven into the Cub Scout Program and how and why words/terms entered into the Cub Scout Program. A great introduction to the Cub Program for new Leaders!

Cub Scout Advancement

CSC-4 1 Hour Learn the purpose of advancement in the Cub Scout program and how it differs from the Boy Scout advancement program. During this session the following topics will be discussed: the program goals, parent and leader responsibilities, arrow points and who can earn them, and tips to assist you with advancement in the den. Bring unanswered questions about advancement.

CSC-6 1 Hour Once your Scouts have reached rank, what do you do? This session will give yoy ideas of additional awards the boys can work on earning to keep them interested in the scout program all year long. (this would include things such as sports and academic belt loops and pins, religious awards, outdoor activity award, world conservation award, summertime pack and den awards and ideas for these summertime activities, etc.)

"Outing" in Scouting

CSC-7 1 Hour This session will touch on Guide to Safe Scouting, LOE (Leader's Outdoor Experience) brief overview, Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award and give additional ideas of giving your boys what many of them have signed up for "playing in the outdoors", such as outdoor games, hikes, service projects, activities, campfires, etc. proliferation of the internet has brought many wonderful tools to Scouting. Trek Safely is a 7-Point Program designed to help youth and adult leaders plan and carry out a safe trek experience. This program promotes safe activities including ways to avoid accidents. Whether your trek is 2 days or 2 weeks, this program has application for a range of group sizes.

HA-8 1 Hour Backpacking Stoves

Certification Course -- Pressurized Fuel Training. This course offers a discussion and display of backpacking stoves by fuel type and group size, as well as a safety demonstration and discussion.

Learn the principles of Leave No Trace. Learn how to instill outdoor ethics in your Unit hiking and camping activities.

HA-10 1 Hour Boots and Socks

Find out about appropriate boots and socks required for a one-day hike or a 2-week High Adventure activity! For all adult leaders.

Learn the features and benefits of backpacks, sleeping bags, and sleeping pads. This information will help you make appropriate equipment decisions for Scouting activities ranging from weekend camping to High Adventure trips.

HA-12 1 Hour "Eve" on the Trail

The requirements of health and hygiene are different in the outdoors for young men and young women. Learn why and how a little additional planning will enhance the total experience for everyone. Recommended for leaders who have males and females in their Unit - youth, adult, or both. This is a Co-ed class for Adults.

HA-13 1 Hour Wilderness First Aid - The Primer

Wilderness first aid training will be required for treks to Philmont Scout Reservation, Northern Tier and Florida Sea Base in 2015 and beyond and is recommended for backcountry camping, hiking, canoeing, or other high adventure. Learn what is required and where this valuable training will be offered. Understand the prereuisites and fees, and get an overview of the 16 hour course.

HA-14 1 Hour How to Add Scuba Diving to Your Scouting Program

Have you ever wondered how to give your Troop or Venture Crew the opportunity to go Scuba diving, either just for fun, to do something different, or to prepare for a trip to Sea Base? TC-1 – Basic Trainer Skills

This is the must have course for the new trainer. Learn to utilize Effective Teaching to develop lesson plans for training syllabus subjects. Brainstorm creative methods and ideas for adding the spark that keeps your audience engaged and actively learning, so that they will retain and use the information effectively. This is the goal of every great trainer!

How do you get people to attend your training sessions? Learn the tools to successfully promote your training session and recruit your target audience.

TC-7 – Youth Protection / Youth Protection Presentation Skills

The Boy Scouts of America is dedicated to providing quality leadership to the youth we serve. As part of that dedication, all registered volunteers must take Youth Protection Training every two (2) years to help ensure that we are providing the most secure environment possible for our youth members. The first portion of this two part session will certify that the adult volunteer has successfully completed Youth Protection Training. Those wishing to serve as a certified trainer for Youth Protection will learn the skills necessary to train volunteers in Youth Protection during the second part of this session.

TC-9 – Trainer’s EDGE 4 – Presentation Workshop – Practical Application

Commissioner College

CC-1 3 Hours Unit Commissioner Basic Training A must for all new Commissioners! Learn the responsibilities of a Commissioner and the art of Commissioner Service. This class is required to be considered "Trained" in the Unit Commissioner role.

CC-2 3 Hours Administration of Commissioner Service For Assistant District Commissioners and District Commissioners. Covers such topics as recruiting, coaching, matching UCs to Units, area management, team management, and strategies for Commissioner Service. This class is required to be considered "Trained" in the ADC and DC roles.

CC-3 1 Hour Selecting Quality Leaders (BCS 117) Recruiting is an ongoing responsibility and Commissioners may need to assist their Units. This session will provide an overview of the seven steps to recruiting a key adult Unit leader and will prepare participants to recruit new leaders for their Units' needs. (This course counts toward a College of Commissioner Science requirement.)

CC-4 1 Hour STEM and the Unit Commissioner Come learn about the BSA's effort to increase interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and how commissioners support this effort in the Units they serve.

LC-1 3 Hours Red Cross First Aid Training ** Additional $30 Fee Required ** (Limit of 20 participants) 3 hour class Registration deadline for First Aid training is January 5, 2015. Standard First Aid Certification includes CPR and Basic First Aid. Hands-on CPR instruction provided. Written exam to verify proficiency of online learning sessions will be administered. Pre-requisite: All participants must complete online pre-work via Red Cross website prior to University of Scouting. Upon registration for the class, an email will be sent to participants with a link to the training which is mandatory to take prior to attendance at UofS.

LC-2 1 hour Successful Succession: Finding Your Replacement Most positions in scouting have a set tenure to them; yet, most of us find ourselves scrambling to find a suitable replacement mere months before we are set to “retire”. In this class, we will talk about what to look for in a possible successor, ways to get them involved without scaring them off, and how to make a smooth transition/handoff of responsibilities.

LC-3 2 hours District Eagle Board of Review Seminar This course qualifies as the training expected of Eagle Board of Review members under the Council's Advancement Plan. The “new” Eagle Packet and Workbook will be highlighted and discussed. Items covered include the basics of fundamental board of review principles, requirements for Eagle reviews, the purpose of project reviews, appropriate & inappropriate questions, & more. This class will discuss some of the opportunities that exist at the district, council and even national levels that can always use quality volunteers to help support the program for the youth, how to get involved and various descriptions of the type of work involved

LC-5 2 hours Addressing Adult Conflicts If your adults just can't get along, it's a poison that will kill your unit! This course is designed to help adults resolve issues through diplomacy, following the BSA rules, and (when all else fails) how to remove a volunteer or youth from your program. (2-hour Course 10:00am-11:50am)

LC-6 1 hour Merit Badge Counselor Orientation Learn how Merit Badges fit into the advancement program, what you need to do to become a Merit Badge Counselor, BSA and GSLAC procedures to follow, and the nuts and bolts of working with Scouts on the Merit Badges.

LC-7 1 Hour Scoutmaster vs. Chairman: A Perspective Have you ever had a Scouting situation where you weren’t quite sure a task was yours to handle? Often times, we get so wrapped up in providing program for the boys that we either forget what essential functions are our responsibility or we overstep our boundaries, alienating others in the process. This class will examine the 2 primary positions of every unit and offer some clarity as to the responsibilities associated with each.

LC-8 1 Hour Scouting Need Not Be Taxing Many adults become active in Scouting to help youth turn into the future leaders of our country. However, there are more benefits than just the satisfaction of a great program. This class will show you several ideas on things that you can do on your income taxes, various laws about donating property, and what Scouting related expenses are deductible. Discussion will cover various tax/deduction topics as they pertain to Scouting situations
