What is IPD?

Integrated Project Delivery is the DNA of a project.

Teamwork

The project team needs to engage on the “model” and use that as the primary source of information. The model has all appropriate control measures in place before packages are released as IFC .

Essential systems

• IT must be part of the collaboration for effective IPD. Ensuring the project has adequate oomph in its servers, all software to be used is incorporated in the projects, and all parties, site especially, have equal access to the current data.

• Communicating the message to everyone is the secret to a successful outcome on many levels.

• Existing ERP systems must be supported with elimination/shut down of duplicated functions and an adherence to using only IPD platform data.

• Document control management systems are imperative in a collaborative environment.

• Scheduling such as P6 is fully aware & utilise the data generated from the IPD.

• Project Controls stipulate the measures to be applied and incorporated in all project documentation.

• From a virtual reality to real life, our case study


Case Study

• A material tracking system was developed ,capitalizing on the project wide shop detailing.

• For this project BDS Vircon were the providers of the data from the Tekla model into user friendly formats.

• Bar-coding of all fabricated structural steel was the priority, followed by all fabricated platework and piping. Final quantities of assemblies/Mark Numbers to be tracked were in excess of 30,0000 items (3500 tonnes combined weight.)

• To have a successful tracking facility requires a central database of “inventory” with a standard classification brief.

• The Steel detailer in this instance used the Tekla 3D Structures software to execute the shop detailing. On receipt of the Navis Works models the Tekla software generates a unique identification code allocated to a Mark Number.

• This code is the key to the complete life cycle of any nominated member requiring full traceability. The milestones were set in the initial stages of the project.

IPD & Barcoding

• The barcoding software once synced with the field scanning data creates an excel report that records the Mark Number, date received and designated laydown location.

• This progress is uploaded into the Tekla Model, that in turn can report via its database or the Tekla 3D model

Site Laydown Yards

• Unloading of all the project deliverables took place in laydown yards nearby the build site.

• This project was one of many in 2010 that was impacted by the floods. Although a lot of Queensland was shut down, the rest of Australia kept going. This created a huge area of backlogged fabricated items that had to be stored at the site.

• Every piece of steel, platework and piping was barcoded providing , location in the yard, date received and date issued for installation.

• Two material controllers with scanners it was possible to check and log 100’s of tonne steelwork through the course of a day.
