Ash River Documentation

29 July, 2019 APA Assembly Tower Status2

After a series of useful meetings at Fermilab with TC and

ES&H management we have agreed on the following for

Ash River

• Engineer reviews of all design, drawings and engineer

notes will continue to be guided by the Lead

Mechanical and Electrical Engineers for approval.

• Procedures and Hazard Analyses will be reviewed by

the University of Minnesota

• Everything will be posted on EDMS

• A formal header page will be approved for sign-offs

and updated as any changes occur during the R&D

process

• It needs a little better organization but it is a good start

Introduction-APA to APA Assembly Tower• At Ash River the first phase of the APA

assembly process is the material

handling, rotation to vertical and

transport of the APA to the APA

Assembly frame.

• Underground at DUNE the APAs are

rotated inside the APA shipping box and

the APAs are just picked up vertically.

• For the protoDUNE Trial assembly at

Ash River and the construction of the

TPC at CERN the APAs were rotated

using a special fixture attached to a

steel bar and rotated using 2 cranes.

• For the DUNE trial assembly at Ash River we will rotate the APAs using slings, a snatch block and wire rope to pick up the APA in landscape mode and rotate into the vertical orientation

• The load of the bottom APA sits on an actuator that allows us to make the PD electrical connections and raise it up to connect the APA links between top and bottom APA forming a doublet or pair.

• The load of the top APA hangs from the trolley system.

• The APA Assembly Frame is used to stabilize the APA on linier guides

Rotation of the APA at Ash River

29 July, 2019 APA Assembly Tower Status12

• Using three 4 foot, 2500# choke rated 1” nylon strap doubled around the end of the top two corners and one bottom one on the head tube(top APA) or foot tube(bottom APA).

• Using a ½” 2T shackle join the 10 ft. 3/8” 1.4T (Vertical) wire rope threaded thru a 2T Crosby block to the top and bottom nylon strap.

• Hook one crane on the end of the APA to be lowered and the other crane to the Crosby Block.

• Lift out of APA shipping box and move to loading dock area

• Lower the single hook point until the APA is handing Vertically

Securing the Bottom APA

29 July, 2019 APA Assembly Tower Status13

• We need to disconnect the rotation device so we can place the APA in the APA Frame.

• For the bottom APA the foot end is up, we rest the head on blocking in the floor and strap the top (foot end) of the APA to the south column of the ProtoDUNE structure. The wire rope is removed and two 20 foot nylon straps one on each crane are attached to two 1” nylon straps using a shackle. It can now be lifted and placed in position on the actuator of the APA Assembly frame

Dual crane lift used to put place APA assembly frame

would be similar to how the lower APA would be put in

position

Securing the

Bottom APA

29 July, 2019 APA Assembly Tower Status14

• The APA is secured to the APA Lifting Beam

Assembly on the actuator by APA Standoffs,

350mm lower than it’s final position. The load

still attached to the two cranes.

• Access to the APA stabilizers is via 40’

scissor lift

• The stabilizer pin is deployed by removing

the detent pin and lowering down. The detent

pin is reinstalled.

• The 4 stabilizers are adjusted for elevation to

the highest and lowest 20mm nut access hole

on the APA side tube. Since the APA

protection is in place there is limited visibility.

Securing the Bottom APA

29 July, 2019 APA Assembly Tower Status15

• Once aligned the Spring Action Pull

Knob is pushed into the locked

position this point on the APA is

securely lock in place.

• This is repeated in all 4 locations

• Remember that the load of the bottom

APA is always supported by the

actuator the stabilizers just hold it in

position.

• Once the load is secure you may

remove the load from the crane and

remove the 1” nylon lifting strapsLocked Position

Securing the Top APA

29 July, 2019 APA Assembly Tower Status16

• The top APA is picked up and rotated with the head tube on the top. It is secured to the ProtoDUNE structure and the rotation equipment is removed.

• The top APA is lifted into place exactly as done for ProtoDUNE. It is lifted vertically by a Stainless Steel Beam identical to the rest of the Detector Support System. The concept is once the APA is hanging on the trolleys it says like that until it is in the final position in the cryostat.

• The Lifting beam is connected to the crane with the trolleys already clamped in position with stops held by detent pins on lanyard's.

• The lifting beam is positioned above the Top APA and connected via 20mm pins on the structural T’s attached to the APA.

Securing the Top APA

29 July, 2019 APA Assembly Tower Status17

• The lifting fixture is lifted into position

next to the segmented beam on the APA

Assembly Tower and bolted connection

is completed

• Access is gained by a 60’ boom lift to

make the attachments

Once the connected the detent stop is removed and the APA is rolled to the segmented beam. Once stops are in place the lifting beam can be unbolted and moved away from the tower.

Actuator Operation

29 July, 2019 APA Assembly Tower Status18

• The control panel for the actuator is located

in the mid point of the APA Assembly Tower.

It can be operated from a 15’ pendant from

the scissor lift or on the control panel. Limit

switches have been set at 234mm for PD

cable work, 44mm to move from full speed

to slow, and up limit is set to 33mm.

• The bottom APA is raised to a distance of

234mm that allows the PD cables to be

connected. A complete test (~1 hour) of the

PDs is run before the bottom re raised any

further

• At this point the APA to APA links can be

installed on the top APA so that they are

hanging loose. 345mm gap between APA’s when process starts

Actuator Operation

29 July, 2019 APA Assembly Tower Status19

• The actuator operation is a minimum of

a 4 person operation. One person at the

actuator control box at mid-level, 2

people in the 40’ scissor lift and 1 person

for ground support.

• As the bottom APA comes up one

person is stationed on each side of the

APA in the scissor lift and guides the

link in. Once you move into slow mode

the APA can only be lifted from the

control box in 2mm increments.

• Once you can insert the bolt into the

bottom APA link they are tied together.

• Check for electrical isolation between top and bottom APA

• Recheck all PD cables connections to confirm they are reading out properly

Disconnecting the APA Stabilizers

29 July, 2019 APA Assembly Tower Status20

• Once it has passed all it’s QC tests the actuator can be lower so the load of the APA pair is now supported from the two APA slave trolleys.

• If the cabling station is free the stabilizers should be retracted and the APA pair moved to the station if not leave them deployed while other work is done to the APA Pair giving us flexibility in the work flow

• Other work that can start:

- Installation of CR boards and bias voltage wire harness

- Install CE FEBMs top and bottom

- Cable tray installation
