In April 2011, the exchange rate regime was changed from a fixed rate regime to a band of 20 percent around a central parity of MVR 12.8 per US dollar

Inflation rate of food and beverages group is high as prices of long grain rice, normal sugar and wheat flour increased due to the removal of subsidies on 1st October 2016.

Universal Health Insuarance Scheme named "Aasandha" was introduced in January 2012 and replaced the existing schemes "Madhana" and "Madhana Plus".

The expenditure on health insurance “Aas-andha” showed an annual increase of 19.6%

in 2016 to reach MVR1.7 billion.

MVR 156 Million was paid as dis-ability allowances to 6,696 persons during 2016

“MVR 75 Million went for emer-gency medical welfare of 6,777 individuals during the year 2016”

“Senior citizen allowance amounted to the highest (42%) share of pension pay-ments in 2016”

“MVR 34,800 was paid to 395 personsunder the food subsidy for poor, introduced

in 2016”
