STATED We would like to welcome everyone back to SC State University and welcome the fresh faces on our campus.

As most of you know, the second issue of STATED was Alicia Dowdy’s final issue as Editor-in-Chief. I was giving the opportunity to work under Alicia and to see her vision of the magazine unfold. Ms. Dowdy is a very upfront and forward person. She believes in getting work done on time. She has a very strong mind and places her passion to the task at hand. She has trained me to be the best and to pick up her vision and carry it forward. I am thankful for the opportunity to be the new Editor-in-Chief of STATED Magazine. I will work hard, listen to your voices and make sure you are a part of the magazine too!

We are looking for an amazing team of hard workers who can do interviews, write, take photos and edit for the magazine. So if you are interested, stop by the Student Media Office. Once again, welcome back and have an awesome year!

Kappa Kappa Psi is the national honorary band fraternity, founded on the campus of Oklahoma State University in 1919. Kappa Kappa Psi operates primarily as a student service and leadership recognition society whose chief aim is to assist the Director of the band in developing the leadership and enthusiasm that is required for their tasks. Their goals are to provide the band not only with organized and concentrated service activities, but to give membership, valid and wholesome experiences in organization of solid leadership and social contacts. The honorary nature of this membership is based on the premise that

Lorpu ASK

In discussing a situation like this one, I believe it is important to understand the difference between being in Love and to Love someone. When one is in love, their life becomes focused around their other half; they tend to give equal attention to that person’s wants and desires in their day to day life. Commonly, being in love also gives you a sense of elation, and a feeling of being overcome with desire to be with and satisfy that person. Being in love and trusting someone go hand in hand. Therefore, I do not believe that one would be able to completely give his/her heart to someone he/she does not trust with their well-being. If one consults the dictionary he/she will find that love is said to be “an intense affectionate concern for another person.” Trust is said to be “a firm reliance on a person or thing in which confidence is placed.” In conclusion, I do believe it is possible to love someone for whom you may not trust, but I do not believe it is possible to be in love with someone you do not trust due to the emotional connection that must be in place to consider yourself in love with another individual. Although you may still have strong feelings for that individual which may be perceived as love, it is not as strong as the feelings you may have had for that individual when you were in love with them due to the lack of trust.

Q Is it possible to be in love with someone if I do not trust them?

No, I absolutely do not believe it is possible to be in love with someone you do not completely trust. I say this speaking on a personal level.

What is TRUE faith? by: Lavantai Wynn

Many people nowadays have several definitions of what faith means.

It could mean trusting someone to do something important, entrusting

with someone something of value or of worth, or even putting yourself in

harm’s way, knowing someone would do the same for you. There are many

definitions and situations in which faith can be used, but they all have one

underlying feature, TRUST in something that may or may not be true.

The definition of Faith is “the confident belief or trust in the truth or

trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing.” Most of the time faith can be seen

as something that has to be associated with a type of religion. Faith in this

instance is that one belief in a certain fact, even though there could be some

that speculate and doubt it. If one truly believes in something, they are willing

to sacrifice and give up things from it. Too many times I have seen people

who say they have faith in this person or they have faith in this thing, but they

are really saying that they just simply hope that what they have “faith” in will

work out.

True faith is unwavering, meaning that one does not allow onself to

doubt and question anything that pertains to the subject. Not what any experts,

naysayers, professors, or anyone else has to say negatively about the subject.

F a i t h

Page 23: Stated Fall 2009

In a sense, it could be seen that one will have to be stubborn to another

point of view and adamant about what they think. This isn’t stubborn to the

point of being rude or so forth towards someone who speaks contrary to what

you would believe. It’s just the simple premise of knowing what you know

without ever doubting it. Now the faith of people is not always bulletproof

or made of adamantium, but that just proves that each and every one of us is

human and needs to get refreshed in some way about what they have faith in.

Faith cannot be based on what some people may say or what some

people may think. Faith comes from inside YOU. You as an individual come

up with what you have faith in and true faith cannot be made or based off of

someone else. If someone gave you something to have faith in, someone else

can just as easily come by and take it away. This is important because faith

encompasses who we are as individuals and not having faith in anything will

leave one to live as if they have no purpose in life and are just fading away.

Simply saying you have faith in something does not mean you whole-

heartily and completely believe in something. True faith must be nurtured,

and exercised, so that it will stay strong and last long. This is made by going

back and learning, interacting, or experiencing whatever you may have faith

in. This is where faith is strengthen and made complete. If one does not go

back and exercise or experience their source of faith on a consistent and

continual basis, some unfortunate event, someone’s catchy/witty remarks, or

some smooth talker’s great speech, can cause one’s faith can to waver. So of

all things, I just ask each and everyone out there who says they have faith in

something to actually go back and experience it, or learn it.

Starring: Sacha Baron Cohen, Alice EvansRelease Date: 10th July 2009

After the absolute smash of Sacha Baron Cohen’s big screen adventure “Borat,” the British comedy gem is back with an even more in-your-face character “Bruno.” Bruno is a camp, over the top homosexual who claims to be an

Austrian reporter and turns up in less “open minded” locations in which he is far from welcome; such as the conservative southern states of America, or soccer games. The character first appeared in TV series Da Ali G Show, interviewing important figures from the fashion world, misleading them into agreeing to things they didn’t believe in, talking about parts of their show that don’t actually exist, and even changing their stance on certain issues to fit with the shows apparent “sponsors.” For example; Bruno managed to make a spokesman completely change his opinion on Paris Hilton during the interview by claiming that The Hilton Group was a key sponsor. Bruno is not just about camp jokes, it’s sharply observant

and, like Borat, is a great tool for revealing what really goes on in some people’s minds.

The Taking Of Pelham 123Starring: Denzel Washington, John Travolta, John Turturro,

James Gandolfini, and the great Luis GuzmánRelease Date: 12th June 2009

Tony Scott is back with a remake of a remake, of a remake of a book adaptation of a… Well, basically, this film has been made once or twice - The original was a 70s crime thriller starring Walter Matthau, adapted from a book, which became a TV movie in 1998. It’s now in the hands of close-up-obsessed Tony Scott, and an all star cast. The movie follows a cynical New York cop (Washington) who witnesses a hijacking on the subway (Travolta). Ransoms and police negotiation then follow. Rest assured, the story is an action packed thriller with some intense character moments. This movie was top-notch! I was very pleased at the action and the chemistry between John Travolta and Denzel Washington.

As usual, Prime has help from Shia Lebouf’s character, Sam and Megan Fox, who helps every kid with ADD keep focus. The movie was a huge smash and worth your money. X-Men Origins: WolverineStarring: Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds,

Director Gavin Hood takes us to the origin of Wolverine, 17 years before the first X-Men movie. The film will cover Wolverine’s discovery of his mutant abilities, and his experiences with the secret Government funded program “Weapon X,” – whose aim it is to turn willing and unwilling mutants into weapons. Even though X-Men 2 does a little background insight into

Wolverine’s past, we get a better view and more understanding of making of this mutant. It was a bone-extending movie!

It’s now post apocalyptic 2018, the world has been all but destroyed by Skynet and John Connor (Christian Bale) is leading the resistance. When he meets a stranger named Marcus, whose last memory is being on death row, Connor must decide if he has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. Interesting premise! Surely Bale wouldn’t agree to star if this didn’t have some serious character curves. The movie was not really my cup of tea…

The Renaissance was an integration of art, music, literature and dance that showed the way of peaceful resistance that eventually won the acceptance and support of many whites in the fight for equality for blacks. The Renaissance was the rebirth of black culture that reached all borders of our nation and beyond. The message of hope brought forth the dreams of the future and a celebration of the black culture born from the chains of slavery, but deeply rooted in the African culture.

FOR THE WOMEN

Challenging and difficult, though that may not be what we want to hear, are the terms that describe long distance relationships. But they are not impossible. A lot of people choose to give a long distance relationship a try. It is true that a long relationship has just as much a chance of succeeding as any other relationship!

All of relationships have the same elements: two people who are interested in each other’s lives, care for each other and of course love each other. On the other hand, a long distance relationship does have its difficulties as well. It takes away your ability to see each other on a frequent note, as well as the choice of being intimate whenever you desire, not to mention that there would be major trust required. Not spending time together makes it harder to hang on to the relationship, but does it not spell doom.

Make an agreement of what your expectations are in the relationship and how much of a commitment you are willing to give and receive. You should know what type of relationship you want.

Long Distance ReLationships Let’s Give It A Try!

Page 47: Stated Fall 2009

First Quarter 2009 | STATED 47

Do you have an open relationship, exclusive relationship, or just a friend with benefits type thing going on? This is very important being in a long distance relationship while you are in college. Focus on the good things about your relationship. Think about what you like about your partner. What do you enjoy about your life together?

Here are three important aspects to know about these types of relationships:

trust is the most important thing in a relationship. Ladies, this can make or break your love life. No matter how tempting a guy is, you should only look not touch. At the same time, trust that your man isn’t cheating on you! Don’t let the Green-Eyed Monster get the best of you.

time is a factor. With the distance, time is an issue. Take it from me. Making a schedule of when the two of you can spend time together is the best thing. Trying to see each other on one person’s schedule isn’t going to work. For example, if your man wants to see you when he is free, there is a chance that you are not going to have time for him. Keep in mind that you have to be understanding to each other plans.

CommuniCation is the key! Especially in a long distance relationship, communication is the reason people break up. To avoid this, talk. Talking to him in person or over the phone, is the best way to express your feelings. I know for a fact that this works. If you have a man like I do, he will know when you need to talk to him. And most likely, he will come to you and asks what wrong.

Ladies, we all want to know if our man is doing something wrong. But going through his mail, wallet, and phone is a death wish. Mutual respect is the key. He is going to love you more for respecting his privacy than being a noisey witch.

When you do see each other try to do something new. Fresh ideas add interest to the relationship. But if you are like me and you are a home body, then spending time playing a video game that he likes or watching something that he likes is going to make the time fun. Just ask my boyfriend, we watch a martial arts movie and then turn around and watch anime. At first it was boring, but now I look forward to our time.

Page 48: Stated Fall 2009

There is an immense amount of scarcity

in today’s society when it comes to job

security as well as job opportunities.

These factors have made the current

job market very competitive. As a

result of this tremendously competitive

environment, many employers

and recruiters have devised some

rather interesting ways of screening

potential employees. In many cases

the prospective employee is being

watched and judged when he or she

least expects it.

Here are three major ways that recruiters may be judging you…

FOR THE MEN SECRETS OF

HIRInG

that every graduate looking for a job should know

Page 49: Stated Fall 2009

First Quarter 2009 | STATED 49

C a r i n s p e C t i o n While you are being interviewed, someone from the company may be

looking at your car to see what kind of shape it’s in. Does it have trash

in it or is it well kept and neat? Your car can be considered by some, as a

defining aspect of your character.

M a n n e r s Some recruiters opt to take the candidate out for lunch in order to observe

how they eat and what they eat, in an effort to get a small glimpse into

their character. Another reason that recruiters might take a candidate to

lunch is to see if they are able to maintain a state of professionalism over

a meal (an ability that is very useful in the business world).

W a i t yo u r t u r nWhile waiting for your interview, you are being watched. Playing

around with a cell phone or taking a loud and unprofessional call might

be the reason that the competition gets the position. While waiting, one

should maintain a professional state in order to make a good impression

on the receptionist, who is most likely taking notes on how you conduct

yourself.

These are just a small portion of the unconventional methods that

employers and recruiters are utilizing in the hiring process. Nevertheless,

a combination of professionalism and common sense with a side order

of a well built resume will aid you on your journey to the job of your

dreams.

EJS: “What lead you to become a producer?”

DW: “I started playing in church, I always wanted to make music so I just picked up a keyboard and went with it. I think it was around the time Kanye West dropped his first mixtape, I was in first grade.”

EJS: “What would you consider to be your style of Music?”

DW: “I would have to say it more of a style of Manny Fresh, coolie and Dr. Dre Mixed altogether with a little rock.”

EJS: “If you just exploded onto the main stream, would be the first artists you would work with?”

DW: “I’d love to work with Drake and Keri Hilson, I know somebody up and coming like me it would be hard to establish famous collaborations, but I would also like to work with Coolie and Kanye West, people that have been around for a while.”

EJS: “What do you plan to do after you graduate”?

DW: “I want to work as an independent producer, and to try and get SC out there, let the world know that there is a music scene and it’s not just Atlanta or Miami,”

EJS: “What will happen to your group, “Triple M,” after all of you walk across that stage?”

DW: “We plan to a stay group, really get our feet wet and bring everything we’ve learned and done back to SC, who knows...we may just sign to an indie label.

EJS: “Why did you choose to come to study Music Industry at SC STATE?”

DW: “ Everyone has to start from somewhere, I wanted to get a higher education and not just in music, I am aiming to graduate, to come out not being ashamed of being a drop-out statistic.”

EJS: “Out of your professors at SC STATE, who would you say gave you that push that you need?”

DW: “The person that comes to mind is Professor James Orlick, he is the one that sat me down worked with me and gave me insight to the industry from his experience. Whenever I need something like a drum set, room to work or practice he somehow manages it for me. He got me what I need to know.

Following her victory at the 2009 World Cham-pionships, questions about Caster Semenya’s gender were raised. The 18 year-old South African middle-distance runner and world champion won the gold medal in the 800 meters in Berlin with a time of 1:55.45, again setting the fastest time of the year. In July 2008 Semenya participated in the

2008 World Junior Champion-ships, and won the gold in the 800 m at the 2008 Com-monwealth Youth Games with a time of 2:04.23. In the 2009 African Junior Champi-onships Semenya won both the 800 m and 1500 m races with the times of 1:56.72 and 4:08.01 respectively. Seme-nya stated she was uncon-cerned about the rumors or the verification and that she considered boycotting the medal ceremony as a result. The International Associa-tion of Athletics Federations (IAAF) says it was “obliged to investigate” after she made improvements of 25 seconds at 1500m and eight seconds at 800m – “the sort of dra-matic breakthroughs that usu-ally arouse suspicion of drug use.” IAAF president Lamine Diack stated, “There was a

leak of confidentiality at some point and this led to some insensitive

reactions.” After it was found that Caster Semanya is indeed a woman, she was given the opportunity to dis-play her womanhood on the September cover of You Maga-zine, after having undergone a complete makeover.

Kobe Bryant has chosen not to terminate the final two years of his contract and will remain with the Los Angeles Lakers. Now the Lakers and Bryant’s agent will negotiate a contract extension. He has spent his entire 13-year career with the team, winning four NBA championships and in so few words comments that he‘s comfortable with the Lakers and has no intentions of going anywhere. Bryant is scheduled to make $23 million next season. The Los Angeles Times reported late Tuesday that Bryant will sign a three-year extension with the Lakers sometime this month. Bryant could make $47.8 mil-lion over the next two years and another $86 million to $91 million with the extension, with the difference depending on the future salary cap, the newspaper

reported.

After leading the Minnesota Vikings to a 30-23 lead over his former Green Bay Pack-ers, the team that let him go in a trade to the New York Jets after 16 seasons, Favre is noting that revenge had nothing to do with the win, just his love for the game. Favre’s first game against his former team was all fun for the Vikings and all frustration for the Packers, as the now 40 year- old quarterback kept his cool and connected for three touchdown passes and 271 yards on Monday night’s game( Oct. 5) . Brett Favre signed a contract with the Minnesota Vikings on August 18, 2009. The deal is reportedly a two-year contract worth $25 million.

OH NO YOU DIDN’T!!!!!.....

Serena Williams argued a call by the line judge, leading to her disqualification for a conduct violation during the Women’s Singles Semifinal match against Kim Clijsters of Belgium on day thirteen of the 2009 US Open in New York City. The petite lineswoman reported her words to the umpire, who called in the tourna-ment referee to give her account of the incident. Miss Williams stormed over to the line judge, cursing and shaking her racquet, pointing at her and thrusting a ball in her face. Serena apologized later for the abusive and threatening tirade she launched at a line judge in a semi-final loss to eventual champion Kim Clijsters at the US Open. Williams’ outburst meant she was docked a

point on match point, handing a semi-fi-nal victory to Clijsters.

Dunta Robinson of the Houston Texans was

fined $25,000 in reference to the message the

cornerback had on his shoe during the sea-

son opener lose against the Jets (27-4). “ Pay

Me Rick”, was in the message to the general

manager Rick Smith. Smith explained the

team’s reasoning for the fine as not wanting

to display any negativity from the team and

because they expected his behavior to be

more reflective of the team’s philosophy.

Robinson said he won’t appeal the fine,

but told The Associated Press that he

wants to talk to Smith about the money

being donated to a Boys and Girls Club

or a needy family.
