Subj: Report on Surveys of Biennial Determination of Student Interest in Athletics

During the 1992-93 school year, the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) andthe Minnesota State Department of Education (MDE) joined efforts to provide schoolswith information which would:

1) define state and federal laws and rules which govern gender equity in athletics;.and,

2) assist school districts to evaluate the status of gender equity in their district, andtake necessary action, thereby avoiding costly and unnecessary complaints and

.litigation.

The project was initiated through an ad hoc committee, the Sports Equity Committee,which was formed in Apri11992. The following projects were accomplished:

1) On October 1,1992, a uniform Stlul~nt Alhktk Inurest 514111" was sent to allmember schools of the MSHSL. The survey was designed for use'by your districtto make its biennial dettrmination ofstudent demonstrated athletic interests, asrequired by the DepaT111Unt ofEducation and .

2) On. February 1, 1993, two (2) copies of the Gender EquUy in Athktks RnuwManUDl was sent to aU MSHSL member schools. .. The manual providesinformation on how to conduct a self-review ofyour district's athletic program asit relates to Title lX, M.S. 126.21 and State Board rules on gerukr equity,' and,

3) On May 1, 1993, schools provitkd seuct dtJJIJfrom QUU'4tIC murestsurveys to the League Office on. their 1993-94 Registration From.
