sc STATE Il\1PORTANT INFORMA TION Please Route: __ Board of Education __ Principal __ Athletic Director _Coaches August 1, 1993 To: Superintendent of MSHSL Member Schools Subj: Report on Surveys of Biennial Determination of Student Interest in Athletics During the 1992-93 school year, the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) and the Minnesota State Department of Education (MDE) joined efforts to provide schools with information which would: 1) define state and federal laws and rules which govern gender equity in athletics; .and, 2) assist school districts to evaluate the status of gender equity in their district, and take necessary action, thereby avoiding costly and unnecessary complaints and .litigation. Subj: Report on Surveys of Biennial Determination of Student Interest in Athletics

During the 1992-93 school year, the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) andthe Minnesota State Department of Education (MDE) joined efforts to provide schoolswith information which would:

1) define state and federal laws and rules which govern gender equity in athletics;.and,

2) assist school districts to evaluate the status of gender equity in their district, andtake necessary action, thereby avoiding costly and unnecessary complaints and

.litigation.

The project was initiated through an ad hoc committee, the Sports Equity Committee,which was formed in Apri11992. The following projects were accomplished:
