• The technological advances in train design during this period have enabled the construction of more high-speed rail lines and the broader use of high-speed trains as an alternative and environmental friendly means of travel.

• Today, rail networks across Europe are getting busier with trains travelling at higher speeds and carrying more passengers and heavier axle loads than ever before.

• The combination of these factors has put considerable pressure on the existing infrastructure, leading to increased demands in inspection and maintenance of rail assets due to the higher risk of catastrophic failure.

Background and Motivation

The project seeks to minimise the number of rail failures by developing and successfully implementing an Integrated high-speed system based on Modular design for the fast and reliable inspection of rail tracks; Each module will provide information for different aspects of the condition of the rail track .

The application of the high-speed system will be complemented through the implementation of novel semi-automated testing equipment which will be deployed for the in-situ verification and evaluation of the defects detected during high-speed inspection.

Objectives The automated vehicle will

be complemented by additional manual techniques for the evaluation of weldments and joints like high frequency

vibration analysis and phased array.
