SOAR stands for Student Orientation, Advising and Registration. It’s your chance

to get the inside scoop on all things 49ers. Go through the checklist below and

complete each of these items before you arrive at your SOAR session:

» Activate your NinerNET account at pwmanager.uncc.edu.

» Register for your SOAR session at soar.uncc.edu. Sessions fill quickly, so

get on it!

» Make sure you register for a session offering academic advising for your

major.

» Arrange to have transcripts of all previous college work sent to the

Undergraduate Admissions Office for evaluation; you’ll also need to bring

unofficial copies for your advising session.

» Determine if you need to take the practice Math Proficiency Exam at math.

» Send copies of your immunization records to the Student Health Center.

» Bring your UNC Charlotte student ID number.

You’ve likely been through an orientation before, but at SOAR, we show you the

ins and outs of student life at UNC Charlotte. At SOAR, you’ll be able to:

» Register for fall semester classes.

» Meet with advisors and faculty/staff members in your major department.

» Take language proficiency exams as needed.

» Learn about academic procedures and student life offerings designed

specifically for transfer students.

» Get a taste of the campus, services, and facilities.

» Make some new friends with fellow transfer students before the year

begins.

CHECK-INCheck-in is from 7:30-8:00am on all SOAR dates and your SOAR Session ends at 5:00pm.

2017 TRANSFER SOAR SESSION FEES » Transfer student = $75 Transfer, Parent/family member* = $45 Includes: continental

breakfast, lunch, all program materials, and all program expenses. » *ALL parents/family members attending the SOAR program, regardless of age, must pay

the $45 fee. » Refunds for SOAR fees can be made only if the SOAR Office is notified in writing at least

five business days prior to the confirmed program date. No exceptions can be made.

BUT REALLY...WHAT’S THE DEAL?

VIRTUAL ORIENTATIONWe’re pretty up to date on this whole technology thing, and do offer Virtual Orientation for a very small number of transfer students. Individuals selecting this option must still complete a half-day Academic Orientation on July 7th. The Foreign Language Proficiency exam will not be offered during this session. In addition there will be no formal parent/family member program available on this date. Additional information is available during the SOAR registration process.

TRAVEL INFOWhen you arrive, follow the signs to the parking and check-in areas near Wallis Residence Hall. Most sessions begin with check-in at 7:30am and conclude by 5:00pm. For those attending the July 7th virtual session, check-in will occur from 7:30-8:00am with programs concluding at 1:00pm that day.

GETTING IN EARLY? If you’re just dying to get here and plan to arrive the night before your SOAR session, you may purchase an extra night’s lodging during the online registration. Campus housing is available the night before your SOAR session at an additional cost of $25 per person, and includes all linens and towels. Additional information on check-in procedures for early arrivals will be included in your SOAR confirmation.

PARENTS AND FAMILIESBring your family to meet your new Niner family. SOAR isn’t just for students. SOAR offers several ways to introduce your parents and family members to UNC Charlotte as well. Let your family know that SOAR features a ton of helpful information and sessions just for them. While you’re involved in student sessions, your family will have the opportunity to learn about campus, speak with the University administrators, faculty members, and Orientation Counselors about topics geared towards them. Ask your parents and family members to sign up for SOAR when you do!

FOREIGN LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY EXAMINATIONIf your major falls within the College of Arts and Architecture, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Nursing, Social Work, or International Business, you must demonstrate a competency in either foreign language or American Sign Language. For further information about foreign language requirements, exemptions for CLEP, AP, or prior course work, please visit languages.uncc.edu/undergraduate-programs/requirements-and-policies.

PRIVACY OF STUDENT RECORDSThe Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), enacted in 1974, has the primary purpose of protecting the privacy of student information by controlling access to, and disclosure of, students’ education records. This federal law broadly prohibits the disclosure of any confidential information from student records, even to parents and family members – regardless of student’s tax status or the funding of the student’s education. If family members choose to attend SOAR, please be aware that some portions of the program are only open to students. Additional information about FERPA can be found at legal.uncc.edu/FERPA.

DISABILITY ACCOMMODATIONSNew Student and Family Services and the Office of Disability Services work to ensure that SOAR is accessible to all attendees. Students with disability or medical needs who require accommodations to participate in SOAR should contact the Office of Disability Services at least two weeks prior to their scheduled SOAR date by calling 704-687-0040. Summer SOAR sessions are a big deal and a critical piece to developing your #NinerPride. We understand emergencies happen. If you are unable to attend a summer session, we offer two sessions closer to the start of classes.

If you do not attend any SOAR session by July 31, you’ll automatically receive information in August about attending the Transfer SOAR sessions on August 17 or 18. But the cliff notes version is just not the same as the full summer experience.
