Who will kick off with Salman Khan?Sajid Nadiadwala has been in the news following his surprise decision to turn director. After 25 years in Bollywood as a producer, Sajid’s move came as he replaced Shirish Kunder in the director’s chair for Kick. Now, he wants to ensure that he picks the right female lead opposite Salman Khan inthe film.Insiders confirm that he has shortlisted four names for the action film — Anushka Sharma, Deepika Padukone, Sonakshi Sinha and Ileana D’Cruz, who makes her debut later this month with the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Barfi! “It’s confirmed that Sajid will choose from one of these four girls to star opposite Salman,” informs a source. It’s even being said that Sonakshi might not make the cut, considering that she has already worked with Salman in Dabangg (2010) and will star in the upcoming sequel as well. “Sajid is keen to create a completely fresh pair. So, it looks like the options are Ileana, Deepika and Anushka, one of whom will play Salman’s love interest,” says the source. When is a formal announcement expected about the coveted role? The source adds that casting decisions will not be finalised for the next 15 days at least. “Since Sajid is

Minister Fast Announces Permanent Canadian Trade Presence in BurmaThe Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, today announced that Canada will have a full-time trade commissioner at Canada’s soon-to-be-open embassy in

Burma. The announcement was made during Minister Fast’s trade mission to Burma and three other countries in Southeast Asia.“A deeper Canada-Burma trade relationship will benefit Canadians through the jobs,

prosperity and greater selection of reasonably priced goods and services that come from increased trade,” said Minister Fast. “In turn, our Burmese partners will benefit from the goods, services, expertise and improved standard of living

A fully clothed Prince Harry surfaced for the first time since his Las Vegas shenanigans went public and viral, stepping

out for the WellChild Awards. On September 3, two weeks after his boozy, naked makeout session with Carrie Reichert and possible others in Sin City, Harry was seen in London.Wearing a navy blue suit and a red tie, the smiling Brit, who is a Patron of WellChild, greeted officers on his way to the InterContinental Hotel. The event is held annually to honors the doctors and nurses who care for young people. Harry is an annual attendee, and vowed to attend despite the scandal. There are rumors of a nude video, as well as cocaine use and hookers being present

that night in the VIP suite, but so far, none of that has been proven.Just some mildly embarrassing, but generally harmless shots of Harry in the buff.

Harry has yet to make a comment about his wild weekend, and may not do so; Prince Charles, his father, reportedly told him an apology isn’t necessary.

I desperately needed to win: Vipul MehtaAs we predicted on August 23, budding singer Vipul Mehta from Amritsar, won season six of the reality show, Indian Idol, on Saturday night. Thrilled to bits, the young artiste says, “I desperately needed to win. I was trying to make it in the music industry, and Indian Idol has given me the perfect platform. Now, all the hard work, support from the audience and jury has finally paid off. I have waited for this moment for years. I am on cloud nine.”Vipul was awarded a cash prize of R50 lakh, along with a car and a motorcycle. He plans to gift the car to his 83-year-old grandfather. “He has been a huge support and has a sacrificed a lot for me. When I wanted to try my luck as a singer in Mumbai, he stayed

‘This season, Sui Mui will needle contestants on KBC’Remember Ghadiyal Babu from the first season of KBC and Shrimati Tiktiki from the last? They’ve got married since and produced a child, Sui Mui, who’ll needle the contestants in the new season,” smiles RD Tailang who’s been scripting the game show since it began. RD admits that writingfor Amitabh Bachchan is a

challenge, given his personality and language prowess. “You can’t give him anything halka (light) and aam (ordinary). The words must carry weight, yet be simple. With him even a line like Yun gaya aur yun aaya (Be back in a jiffy) becomes a profound statement,” he says.RD recalls that when KBC arrived in 2000, everyone was speaking Hinglish thanks to youth channel VJs who greeted you with a ‘Yo.’ But Big B opted to speak the common man’s language and greeted viewers with a Namashkar, adaab, satsri akaal, abhinandan and took them back to our roots. “A decade later, people still expect shudh bhasha (perfect Hindi) from him. The grammar and pronunciation must be correct, the vocabulary expansive and gyan (knowledge) not bookish. He will continue doling out life’s philosophy and urge

viewers to follow traffic rules etc, but in a non-preachy style,” says RD. From koi bhi insaan chhota nahin hota (no person is small), the tagline’s changed to gyan hi aapko aapka haq dilata hai (knowledge helps you attain your rights). This has led to the Panchkoti Mahamoney (Rs 5 crore booty) transforming into the Panchkoti Gyaankumbh.

“We weren’t thinking of Allahabad in particular, but the maha Kumbh melas where people from across the country converge in the hope of getting their heart’s desire, quite like KBC’s Hot Seat,” RD says. In the last season, Bachchan wrapped up each episode with a rhyme that has now been extended to e-mails, photographs and even home videos so start digging into your gyankumbh,” smiles RD. “With five days to go, Miss Sui Mui has started ticking.”Big Boss: Bachchan vs SalmanI haven’t written for Salman Khan, but I did script one season of Big Boss with Mr Bachchan as the pop philosopher. Again, the difference lies in their personalities and approach. Salman is like a bhai who will warn the contestants that the next time they squabble, he will go into the House and

pull them up. Bachchan saab is like bade bhai, a family elder who will try to sort out the matter, make the contestants understand who’s galat (wrong) and who’s sahi (right).KBC: Big B vs SRKAmitabh is a respected host, Shah Rukh (Khan) was an endearing dost (friend). His language was more youthful, halka phulka (light), humorous and conversational. Bachchansaab’s lines were more gambhir (serious), but now they are laced with fun because he can carry off comedy as effortlessly as intense drama. Both are superstars with their own connect.

with me, accompanied me to my music lessons and cooked for me as well,” he says.

However, his grandfather couldn’t make it for the grand finale. “The audience has no

place to sit and I didn’t want him to stand for hours. So he stayed back in Amritsar and watched the show live along with my other family members and friends.” Vipul’s plans also include buying a car and a studio for himself. But for now, he is just looking forward to

taking a break and celebrating his victory with his friends. In the near future, the 22-year-old will also shift base to Mumbai from Amritsar to pursue a career as a playback singer. Ask him if he is worried about getting forgotten, like most winners on the show in the past

have, and he says, “Abhijeet Sawant is very popular and has many projects in hand. After Indian Idol, you have to chart your career carefully. Winning is not the end of the road. I will have to utilise this victory and make a place for myself in the industry.”

I will be, Insha Allah.”The 46-year-old, who has around 3 million followers on Twitter, has now moved to Gulmarg from Pahalgam.“SRK flew to Gulmarg in a helicopter from Pahalgam today (Monday) to complete the rest of his shooting schedule. “He will be holding a half-hour interaction with the press in Srinagar on Sep 6 before taking a flight out of the Valley,” Nazir Bakshi, owner of Shiraz Travels that organised the shooting schedule of Yash Chopra’s film in the Valley. In fact, he has been so relaxed that SRK switched his phone to ringing mode after keeping it on silent for years

Ali Kazimi recounts Komagata Maru incident in Undesirables By Tushar UnadkatHistory is important. In centuries past, this statement would have seemed self-evident. Ancient cultures devoted much time and effort to teaching their children family history. Modern society, however, has turned its back on the past. We live in a jet age, a time of advancement. We prefer to define ourselves in terms of where we are going, not where we come from. Our family tree holds no importance for us as they lived in times so different from our own that they are incapable of shedding light on our experience. Therefore, the past (even the relatively recent past) is, in the minds of most of us, obscured by clouds and only vaguely perceived. Our ignorance of the past is not the result of a lack of information, but of triviality. We do not believe that history mattersHowever, history does matter. On May 23, 1914, the Komagata Maru, a ship carrying 376 immigrants from British India, was turned away when it tried to land in Vancouver’s harbour. The passengers on board, like Canadians at the time, were British subjects. Many of them were veterans of the British Indian Army who had fought to defend and expand the empire. They believed it was their right to settle anywhere in the empire, but they were wrong. Enforcing the “continuous journey” regulation, immigration boats surrounded the ship a half-mile offshore. Thus began a dramatic standoff that would escalate over the next two months. Why did Canada refuse to let these South Asian migrants land, when it had accepted more than 400,000 immigrants the previous year? Why did this ship pose a threat to the mightiest empire the world had ever known? Now, these and

other provocative questions are addressed in a richly illustrated book, Undesirables: White Canada and the Komagata Maru, authored by Ali Kazimi and published by Douglas & Mcintyre. Undesirables bring new insight to one of the most infamous episodes in Canadian History- the story of turning away the Komagata Maru.People have wondered why Ali wanted to tell the story of the Komagata Maru. “It is a Sikh story,” they say to Ali, “and you are Muslim, aren’t you?” Ali tells them, “I grew up in Delhi believing in the ideal of a secular, democratic India. Having lived more than half my life in Canada, I am committed to the idea of building a pluralistic, inclusive and just society here.”At the heart of the story lies the struggle between Canada’s desire to build a homogenous nation of white immigrants – preferably from Britain and Northern Europe – and the British Empire’s need for stability. Nevertheless, it was far from incidental – it revealed one component of what was effectively a white Canada immigration policy. Weaving text together with rarely seen photographs, key documents and other striking visual materials, Kazimi brings new insight to

what the federal government acknowledged in 2008 as a “dark chapter” in Canada’s history.Ali KazimiCanada was imagined and created as a White Christian settler state. Unless we fully recognize and confront this historical reality those who are not White and Christian will continue to be perceived as “immigrants” and “new Canadians” – concludes Ali. Today, with Canada’s immigration and refugee framework under intense scrutiny, the story of the Komagata Maru is all the more relevant. History is important because it helps us to understand the present. If we will listen to what history has to say, we can come to a sound understanding of the past that will tell us much about the problems we now face. If we refuse to listen to history, we will find ourselves fabricating a past that reinforces our understanding of current problems.Undesirables is a sincere research, a textual fossil of incidents related with migration to Canada and a thought-provoking book of the year that will sail you through many historical and political waves.

Neha Dhupia teams up with Jimmy for ‘Rangeeley’Neha Dhupia says she has signed a Punjabi film with Jimmy Sheirgill and that she will be doing her first item song for another film.“Yes I am. I am doing a Punjabi film with Jimmy Shergill called ‘Rangeeley’ for which I am going to be shooting right now, I leave for a month,” the 32-year-old revealed at the Blenders Pride Fashion Preview Sunday.Neha is also going to feature in a commercial Hindi film besides an item song as well.“Then I will be coming back and, most people tell me that I stay away from commercial films, so as soon as I am back, I am venturing into something extremely big and commercial. I am also jumping on the bandwagon with doing my first item song which is exciting,” she said. The item song is supposedly for director Tigmanshu Dhulia’s sequel to “Sahib, Biwi aur Gangster”.

Why Not Theatre presents Beyond Bollywood with international star Naseeruddin Shah in two critically acclaimed plays

Why Not Theatre, the Dora Award-winning company who last brought us the smash hit A Brimful of Asha in association with Tarragon Theatre (and which returns this fall), presents Beyond Bollywood, a mini-festival featuring internationally renowned Bollywood stars Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak in two plays (Dear Liar and Ismat Apa Ke Naam) from Mumbai’s

Motley Theatre (founded by Shah to do primarily English plays). Why Not Theatre is also pleased to join TIFF in their presentation of a special event: In Conversation With... Naseeruddin Shah and film screening of Amal.Back by popular demand after a sold-out show in February of 2011, Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah (his wife in real life) star in Dear Liar, a play by Jerome Kilty adapted from the passionate correspondence of canonical playwright George Bernard Shaw and Mrs. Patrick Stella Campbell, a famous actress of the time who inspired some of Shaw’s characters including Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion (who she played the first time in 1914 at age 49).Performed in English, this acclaimed drama runs September 28-30 at the brand new Regent Park Arts and Cultural Centre, the first major theatre production to be programmed at the new space. Dear Liar, spanning over 40 years, chronicles the deep mutual admiration and love (despite both of them being married, and not to each other) through a very significant era of history (1895 to 1939) which was witness not only to innumerable path-breaking accomplishments in the theatre but also to both World Wars and the end of Edwardian Era and with it, that particular way of life so dear to people like Mrs. Campbell. Performed in Urdu/Hindi with English subtitles, Ismat Apa Ke Naam runs October 5-7 at the same venue. Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah and Heeba Shah (their real life daughter) star in this lauded

work based on a collection of three short stories by Ismat Chughtai (1915-1991), whose strong feminist ideology made her one of India’s most beloved, successful and controversial writers of her time. Taking the form of three monologues, it explores human relationships and tackles taboo and controversial subjects such as the sanctity of marriage and monogamy, the lives of rural

women and the decline of the “Mughal” aristocracy at the turn of the 20th century, all told with Chughtai’s signature poetic flair.Naseeruddin Shah is one of Bollywood’s most famous and talented superstars. He has won dozens of awards and has millions of fans the world over. His nearly four decades in film and theatre include over 130 roles in Indian cinema, along with international hits such as Monsoon Wedding (directed by Mira Nair), Amal (directed by Richie Mehta) and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (directed by Stephen Norrington and starring Sean Connery). Founded in 2007, Why Not Theatre is a Toronto-based, Dora-Award winning theatre company with an international scope. Under the Artistic Direction of Ravi Jain, Why Not has established a reputation as a company synonymous with inventive, experimental cross-cultural collaborations resulting in shows featuring new Canadian writing, company-devised shows alongside revitalized interpretations of classics. Ravi Jain won a Dora Award for his performance in SPENT, and is the 2012 recipient of the prestigious Pauline McGibbon Award administered by the Ontario Arts Council. Why Not will be remounting the smash hit A Brimful of Asha in association with Tarragon Theatre this fall. Beyond Bollywood is a unique cross-over experience that seeks to highlight the depth and high-quality work coming out of India and encourage diversity in performing arts audiences. activist.”“He’s breaking the Bollywood mold by tackling India’s social evils. Can one actor change a nation?” asks the blurb on the cover of the Asia edition of the Sep 10 issue of the US magazine, which features a close-up of the actor looking intensely into the camera.Tracing the rise of Aamir Khan with the 1988 blockbuster hit “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak”, Time’s Bobby Ghosh noted over the past decade the 47-year-old actor has acted in, directed and produced a string of “movies that artfully straddle the

demands of popular cinema and that desire for grace.”“Now, with his groundbreaking TV show Satyamev Jayate (Truth Alone Prevails), he has dispensed with commercial considerations to indulge his conscience,” writes Ghosh. “With it, Khan has taken on the mantle of the country’s first superstar-activist.”“The show, in equal parts chat and journalism, casts an unblinking spotlight on some of India’s ugliest social problems,” he says of the show of which Khan is “creator, producer and host, and he has

invested it with his star power – and his credibility.”“It’s a ballsy move, and potentially jeopardizes his status as the beloved idol of millions,” writes Ghosh, since the subjects his show tackles “are precisely the sorts of harsh realities from which many of Khan’s fans seek escape in his movies.” “Can a movie star affect the mores of a nation of 1.2 billion?” asks Ghosh and suggests “It might just be possible in India, where a national obsession with cinema, unparalleled in the world, gives popular

actors an influence beyond the imagination of Hollywood scriptwriters.”As Khan assesses the impact of his first series, Time suggests, “Whatever Khan chooses to do next in his quest for grace, there’s a good chance it will lift India a little closer to what he – and fellow Indians – would wish their country and society to be.”Aamir Khan is the third Indian actor to be featured on the cover of Time magazine. Aishwarya Rai made it to the cover in 2003 and Parveen Babi was featured in 1976.

quite confident and excited about the film,” she said at a promotional event, marking the film’s tie-up with clothing brand, Jealous 21, here.Asked about she is jealous of in life, she said: “I am jealous of people who get to go on holidays, even though I go on many on my own. I love travelling. I am also jealous of people who get to eat whatever they want.”Releasing on Sep 21, the film also stars Arjun Rampal and Randeep Hooda and has been directed by Madhur Bhandarakar.Having done various films like “Ra One”, “Bodyguard” and “3 Idiots”, the actress said that the

one closest to her heart will be her first film, “Refugee”.“The first film is always special. That innocence never comes back. ‘Refugee’ is my favourite film,” she said.

“Heroine” revolves around the ups and downs in a journey of an actress. Kareena said that even though she is playing the role of an actress in the movie as well, she is nothing like that in real life.“People think there are similarities, but I am not like that in real life. She is bold, manipulative, dark and edgy. I am not at all like that,” she said.Talking about her look in the film, she said: “My favourite looks are in the title song of the film, which is yet to release.”Kareena also revealed that she would have loved to play Konkona Sen Sharma’s role in Bhandarkar’s “Page 3″.

Wasim Akram lashes out at Pakistan for losing ODI series

Ashwin and Kohli achieve career-best rankings

PRIME MINISTER HARPER CONGRATULATES CANADIAN ATHLETES ON PARALYMPIC BRONZE MEDALSPrime Minister Stephen Harper today congratulated archer Norbert Murphy on his bronze medal in Men’s Individual Compound (W1), and track and field athlete Jason Dunkerley

and his guide runner Joshua Karanja on their bronze medal performance in the Men’s 1,500-metre (T11) event at the 2012 Summer Paralympic Games in London. “On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my heartfelt congratulations to Norbert Murphy, Jason Dunkerley and Joshua Karanja on their bronze medal-winning performances today,” said the Prime Minister. “Their success here in London is a testament to the fact that hard work and determination really do pay off.”Norbert Murphy was born in Montréal, Quebec, and resides in Vaudreuil-

Dorion, Quebec. He is a three-time Paralympian – having competed in the Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008 Games – and this is his first Paralympic medal. In 2012, Mr. Murphy

won a silver medal at the Stoke-Mandeville International Invitational in England, and a silver at the Czech Target international para-archery tournament in Nové Město nad Metují,Czech Republic.Jason Dunkerley was born in Newtownards, Ireland, and resides in Ottawa, Ontario. He is a four-time Paralympian and this is his fourth Paralympic medal, having won a silver in Sydney, a silver in Athens and a bronze in Beijing. In 2011, Mr. Dunkerley won a silver medal and a bronze at the Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, and a

gold medal at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Championships in New Zealand. In 2007, he won two gold medals at the 2007

Former captain Wasim Akram on Tuesday lashed out at the Pakistan team after they lost the one-day series 1-2 to a depleted Australian side following their three-wicket loss in the third match at UAE last night.Giving his comments on the third one-day international to Geo News channel, Wasim said that Pakistan had made a number of mistakes in the series and final match that Australia won to take the series 2-1.“As far as captain Misbah is concerned in this series he has appeared out of sorts as a captain, batsman and fielder and made some costly tactical mistakes on the field,” Wasim said.He pointed out that Hafeez despite scoring a half century had batted slowly on a flat track and was unable to provide the Pakistan innings the impetus and thrust it required to pressurize the Australians.“It was a mistake to send in Shahid Afridi at number 3 as he now plays as a bowler in the side. He is used to play his big shots in the final five or four overs. He doesn’t have the application to bat when they are more half of the 50 overs remaining,” he said.Wasim, a former fast bowler, also pointed out that Afridi should only be considered as a bowler now as in batting he clicked once in a while.Wasim, who is a well-known commentator and expert and works as bowling consultant and mentor with the Kolkata

Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League, said that Pakistan had floundered in taking spot decisions.“The batting order was all wrong I have been saying Kamran Akmal has to be used in the higher order and he is being wasted at number seven and eight. Yesterday he went in at number eight and it was a waste of time for him. He should have been sent in earlier so that he got a chance to bat himself in and gain his batting confidence,” he said.Wasim said majority of the Pakistani batsmen were afraid to play their natural game and were failing to dominate bowlers. He was also critical of the decision to bank so heavily on spinners and play just one

pacer in Junaid Khan.“It was a strategy that didn’t work despite the conditions. Saeed Ajmal bowled brilliantly throughout the series and he is easily the best off break bowler today in international cricket. But Pakistan must also depend on pace.”He also advised the Pakistan team to make more sensible use of the umpires decision review system.“Misbah should have taken the review when Mike Hussey was out leg before to Ajmal at a critical time of the match. I don’t know what they were waiting for,” he said. However, Wasim said Pakistan could bounce back in the T20 series because it was a format of the game that suited them.

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Tuesday broke into the top 20 of ICC’s Test Rankings for the first time at a career-best 18th spot after guiding the team to a series whitewash over New Zealand at home. The 25-year-old from Chennai, who took five for 69 in New Zealand’s second innings in the second Test at Bangalore, jumped seven places on the chart. The off-spinner finished the two-match Test series with 18 wickets, and gained 26 places on the bowlers’ table through the course of the series, as India defeated New Zealand 2-0. Ashwin, who was named player of the series, also achieved a career-high rating of 591. Ashwin’s teammate, Pragyan Ojha, ended with a match haul of seven for 148 and moved up a place to 14th, which is his career-best ranking. Ojha’s overall rating of 675 is also his best-ever rating. For New Zealand, fast bowler Tim Southee, who returned career-best figures of seven for 64 in India’s first innings, has jumped 10 places to 40th. His overall rating of 432 is also his career-best to date, the ICC

said in a statement. India pace bowlers Zaheer Khan (15th) and Umesh Yadav (48th) slipped a place each. New Zealand bowlers, who dropped in the latest rankings are Doug Bracewell in 30th (down by one), James Franklin in 49th (down by five) and Trent Boult in 69th (down by six). Batsmen losing ground after the Bangalore Test include Sachin Tendulkar in 16th (down by five), Virender Sehwag in 23rd (down by one), Brendon McCullum in 28th (down by four), Martin Guptill in 37th (down by two), Gautam Gambhir in 38th (down by two), Kane Williamson in 43rd (down by six) and Cheteshwar

Pujara in 58th (down by two). Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakarra remains the top-ranked batsman, followed by South Africa’s Hashim Amla and West Indies veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul in second and third positions, respectively. The rankings for Test all-rounders is still headed by Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan with South Africa’s Jacques Kallis in second spot. Meanwhile, the 2-0 series win has fetched India two ratings points in the ICC Test Championship, lifting them to 106 ratings points, just three behind fourth-ranked Pakistan, while New Zealand has slipped to 76 ratings points (down from 80).

Objectionable parts to go from Son of Sardaar: Ajay Devgn

Emraan smooches Esha for good 20 minutes in Raaz 3He already has the image of the serial kisser but this time Emraan Hashmi seems to have surpassed even himself! In his upcoming film Raaz 3, the actor has indulged in a 20-minute long lip lock with co-star Esha Gupta, not to mention the multiple kisses with his other co-star Bipasha Basu.In the past, too, the actor has shared several long kisses with his co-stars in films like Murder, Tum Mile, Jannat 2 and many more but this is probably his longest on-screen smooch. Not that uncle Mahesh Bhatt minds. “Emraan’s kissing scene is the icing on the cake that we offer in the film to all his fans. I would call this a marathon kiss,” Mid-Day reported.Known as Bollywood’s serial kisser, Emraan Hashmi may have decided to do a family film but feels it would be foolish of him to alienate himself from the kind of cinema he is known for doing.Emraan-Esha’s kiss in Raaz 3When asked about revisiting his image, he said: “We have upped the stakes. There is normally one heroine, but here there are two. The sinful experiences on screen have increased,” the 33-year-old said here in an interview.“I have a core constituency,

an audience who want me to do such films. Every actor has an image and you would be a fool to let go of that. Yes, you can occasionally do other films but if you let go of your core strength then the relatability drops.“Within that realm you should try other genres. Like I do Raaz, I also did ‘Shanghai’ and it received critical acclaim. Of course, this is my core strength and I want to do such films and Raaz 3 is a film which brings all those strengths together,” he added.Other long lip locks

Bollywood star Ajay Devgn here on Monday promised to remove portions of his upcoming movie, ‘Son of Sardaar’, considered objectionable by the Sikh community.Devgn (43) landed here in the morning and showed promos of his movie to a panel of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee(SGPC) and complainant Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad, president of a faction of the All India Sikh Students Federation. Punjab information and public relations minister Bikramjit Singh Majithia was present at the meeting, during which the actor also narrated the film’s story and stressed that the film had no aim to hurt Sikh sentiments.Regarding objections raised by Sikh organisations about a Lord Shiva tattoo on the Sikh protagonist’s chest and a couple of dialogues, the actor, who is shown as a turbaned Sikh in the movie, assured that whatever the SGPC found objectionable would be removed. The actor also promised that a print of

the film would be sent to the SGPC before the release.Addressing mediapersons, Devgn said, “The movie is about Sikhs. I am a Punjabi and hurting sentiments of Punjabis will mean hurting sentiments of my own family. I can never do that.” “There were some promos on Youtube to which there were objections. Since I have great respect for the Sikh community, I have come here and shown them the promos

and listened to their objections. I have promised to do the needful,” Devgn added. He claimed that while making the film, great care was taken to ensure proper tying of the turban by the Sikh characters. “A person was flown about 20 times from Amritsar for the purpose,” he added. When asked whether a different movie print would be released for Punjab, the Bollywood star said, “The same print will be

released across the world.”Speaking on the occasion, Majithia said, “In view of the objections, leading actor Sanjay Dutt approached Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal and asked him to get the issue resolved. The deputy CM asked me to arrange a meeting between the SGPC and Devgn.”“Devgn is a seasoned actor who belongs to Punjab. He has assured that he has the highest regard for Sikh sentiments and nothing objectionable will be exhibited in the movie,” Majithia added.Later, SGPC member Rajinder

Singh Mehta, who, along with three other committee members examined the promos and talked to the actor, said, “Since Devgn has assured us that no objectionable scene or dialogue will feature in the movie, we are satisfied.”Mehta said a report of the meeting’s proceedings would be handed over to SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar, who would forward it to the Akal Takht.Meanwhile, Peer Muhammad said, “There was an objection to a tattoo. Devgn has told us that he will replace it. There

is also an objectionable joke, but we were told that the promo does not show the entire scene, which puts the joke in a different perspective.”Peer Muhammad said he was satisfied as of now, adding that he would forward a report to the Akal Takht, which would take the final decision.Peer Muhammad had submitted a complaint to the Akal Takht Jathedar, Giani Gurbachan Singh, about the “objectionable” scenes and dialogue in the upcoming movie and demanded suitable action.

Suriya, Vikram, Dhanush and Trisha come together

September 07, 2012 (TORONTO) 15KOLLYWOOD www.starbuzz.ca

Will Kochadaiyaan and Vishwaroopam fall in the same hands?

If you think it’s for a film, you have misunderstood. Suriya, Vikram, Dhanush and Trisha have decided to come together for a noble reason, to help students below poverty line in getting better education. All the four actors in association with Parikrama Charitable organization will give their autographed jeans for auctioning. The charity organization has also requested other actors to come forward and give their autographed clothes for auctioning. The rates of their clothes will be fixed based on the market value of each actor. The entire sum will be directed towards the education of poor students.

There is a rather interesting piece of news revolving around the tinsel town. Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam is all set to get snapped. Word is that top distribution companies including UTV Motion Pictures, Fox Star Productions and EROS International are the front runners in getting hold of the distribution rights of this biggie, produced by PVP Cinemas and Raaj Kamal International. It must also be noted that EROS is co-producing the Rajinikanth starrer Kochadaiyaan and distributing the Suriya starrer Maattrraan.Vishwaroopam is expected to hit the screens by end of October and the music release will probably happen in September. If UTV gets hold of this film, they will have a series of releases coming up, with Thaandavam all set to hit the screens on September 28th and Settai expected anytime by the end of this year.

LIFE STYLE & RECIPE

Treating Depression Without MedicationsEmbracing Depression-Depression is a disorder that disrupts the lives of its victims and renders them incapable of enjoying life. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in ten American adults say that they feel depressed but the real figures are likely much higher. That’s to say nothing of American children, of whom three to eight percent are estimated to be clinically depressed. A further 20 percent of young people report feeling depressed but do not quite meet the criteria for the disorder. While it’s perfectly normal for people to occasionally feel depressed in response to certain life events, feeling depressed for prolonged periods or for no apparent reason can be incredibly destructive. Sadly, it is on the rise and as a result, doctors have begun over-prescribing antidepressant medications. At best, these drugs work only for a short time and at worst, they don’t work at all. Furthermore, they are notorious for causing a variety of unpleasant and even dangerous side effects. For this reason, many people suffering from the disorder have begun seeking out natural ways to combat the condition. Here are some of the ways that this can be done.ExerciseMany people don’t exercise, or don’t do so enough. While exercising may seem boring or strenuous, it is a critical part of your physical and mental well-being. Physical activity releases certain brain chemicals such

as endorphins and serotonin that lend themselves to mood enhancement, relaxation and feelings of contentment. Certain types of physical activity, such as weight training, also cause your body to produce greater amounts of testosterone. Higher levels of this hormone are associated with higher self-esteem and feelings of well-being.Exercise can also alleviate symptoms in depressed people by providing a more positive body image. Many people who are overweight or obese are depressed because they feel badly about the way they look. Because physical activity results in weight loss, a negative body image can be improved.Avoiding SugarIt’s natural to crave sweets but that doesn’t mean they’re good for you. In fact, sugar consumption has been linked to an alarming number of health problems ranging from the common cold to cancer. One problem caused by sugar that is often ignored by mainstream medical science is low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Consuming large amounts of sugar, especially without adequate protein and fiber intake, results in a large spike in blood sugar that is followed closely by a sharp decline. When this happens, feelings of anxiety and unexplained sadness, as well as other symptoms, may result until blood sugar is once again stable. Because low blood sugar produces cravings for more sugar, it can result in a vicious cycle of depression. The best way to

remedy this is to avoid refined sugars entirely.Avoid SoySoy has been touted as a health food for many years, but new evidence is showing that it may be far less wholesome than previously believed. Soy is a potent endocrine disruptor that floods the body with estrogen and inhibits the production of essential thyroid hormones. This can support feelings of being depressed in a variety of ways. First, excess estrogen is well known to cause emotional instability and feelings of helplessness. Second, high estrogen and the inhibition of thyroid hormones make it very easy to gain weight and nearly impossible to lose it, which can result in low self esteem. Finally, estrogen drives down levels of testosterone which, particularly in men, can lead to feelings of insecurity and loss of confidence.Nutrition: Proper nutrition is the cornerstone of good health, both mental and physical. Any number or combination of nutrient deficiencies can cause you to become depressed so it’s important to take this into account when attempting to combat the disorder naturally. Avoiding processed or refined foods and sticking with fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs and dairy is the best way to ensure that your nutritional needs are met. Substances like sugar and alcohol will actually flush nutrients from your body, most particularly those in the B group that are essential for mood and brain health.

Actress Vidya Balan has signed a whopping Rs.5 crore deal for endorsing a sari brand. The elan with which Vidya carries the traditional Indian attire, has prompted a well-known Chennai-based sari brand to sign the actress as its brand ambassador.“Vidya today represents the quintessential India woman. She not only dazzles in saris but is also astoundingly self-assured to follow a path charted out only by her at a time when everyone is sporting similar looks. She stands out far apart from the crowd. She brought saris ‘back’,” Swati Iyer of Bling! Entertainment Solutions said in a statement. “Hence it is no surprise that we got her to be the face of the biggest sari brand in the country. We are delighted to represent a personality as unique as her and are extremely proud to play a crucial role in creating Brand Vidya.“Today Vidya stands for everything beautiful, real, honest, Indian and fearless. We now also manage her movies and endorsements,” Iyer added. In recent time, Vidya has given hits like “Paa”, “Ishqiya”, “The Dirty Picture”, “No One Killed

Jessica”, and “Kahaani”. Except the last two, in other films she mostly wore saris.Celebrity photographer Atul Kasbekar, who owns Bling Entertainment, adds they are positioning Vidya as India’s Meryl Streep. “Internally, we have positioned her as India’s Meryl Streep. To a movie going

audience worldwide, if the venerable Ms Streep’s name is in the titles, it is a reason enough to watch the film. We believe that Vidya is now in that league in India by a unique combination of critically acclaimed performances in box office success,” he said.
