ADVENTURES IN THE TROPICS

The lecture to lie given in tile as-sembly ruoin of tile Washingtonschool tomorrow night will be on"Adventures in the Tropics" and willbe given by Allen S. Williams. Mr.Williams has had many experiencesin the tropics of the hair raisingvariety in capturing snakes ami otheranimals. Mr. Williams will exhibitsonic of the live specimens of snakeswhich lie caught while in the tropicsand the lecture promises to lie oneof the most interesting given by theBoard of Education this winter. At the iueetin:4 of the Hoard olEducation on Tuesday nit;ht com-munications were received from sev-en of the ten architecls who had heenasked to compete in the drawing ofplans for the new INKII school lniil.1-iue, declining to take pan in the com-petition. The main reason for de-cliniiiK seenul to lie that the archi-tects did not favor the conditions un-der which the plans were to be sun-milled. Wilson Potter, who was thearchitect for the Washington, Mc-Kinley and Grant schools, sent acommunication to the Hoard statingthat owing to press of work he wasiinaldc lo complete the plans in ihetime specilied.

It is a great disappointmentthai so lew architects respondedlo the invitation to enter thecompetition in submitting plansfur cur new high school building,which brings us to the questionas to whether il is the wisest andbest procedure to undertake suchimprovements in competition.Architecture is not a trade, it is aprofession, and anything in thecompetitive order rubs the calling'il its proper dignitv. one of our greatest assets. Atthe same time, we should be con-sistent. If the trees are of asgreat a value to the beauty andwelfare of our town as they areuniversally accepted to be, arc wepaying as much attention to theircare and preservation as weshould ?

We. have in the past farmedout the trimming ami care of thetrees to a contractor at so muchper tree, which seems to us notthe best mode of procedure. Thework should be done by someoneexperienced in the care and treat-ment of trees in a way that wouldpreserve their greatest value atwhatever the cost. There is en-tirely too little incentive for pro-per treatment in a per tree con-tract, and the average contractordoes not know anything aboutforestry.

During the trimming season,the service of one qualified to dothe work should be employed,and a gang of men given himthat: the trees may receive thetrimming and treatment theyneed to preserve them for theirgreatest value to the town.

Mr. Griffin's Position.

It is very evident that AFr.Griffin had his mind made up forsome months that lie would ac-cent the first opportunity to pushthrough the Legislature thesmall board of freeholders bill.Mr. (IriMin's reply to the protestleaves little encouragement butto believe that we have nothingbut an opponent in Mr. Griffinas regards this piece of legislationwhich we have so long fearedwas a part of the program ofthe politicians in F.lixabeth.
