The TIC is based within the Arts Centre and provides a full information service including places to visit, where to eat, what’s on in and around Stamford and, of course, where to stay!
Our gift shop has a full range of traditional Stamford souvenirs along with guides, timetables, maps, postcards, stamps and local community contacts as well as holiday brochures for the rest of the UK. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are always happy to help!

Pop in to our Cellar Bar, open every evening for those attending Arts Centre events and to those who simply need their thirst quenching and a bit of banter. Serving real ales (including regular guest ales), quality lagers and a superb selection of red and white wines. There are two entrances in to the Cellar Bar: one within the Arts Centre ante room and the other located on St George’s Square around the corner from the Arts Centre front door.
Remember, if you are attending a performance you can beat the rush by pre-ordering your interval drinks and a discount is available on presentation of your ticket!
Acoustic nights are held regularly and organised by Cellar Bar Manager, Andy Croft. Please call after 7pm on 01780 753458 if you are interested in a set.

Relax in our friendly foyer coffee shop or in the historical ante room by the Gallery where a variety of hot and cold snacks are available including sandwiches, baguettes, melts, jacket potatoes, bagels and freshly baked cakes and pastries as well as a children’s menu. Hot and cold drinks are also served including teas, freshly ground coffees, cappuccinos, soft drinks etc and help yourself to a newspaper which are available to read during your time in the coffee shop.

Dust the cobwebs off the barbeque, practice your tennis swing and dig out your short shorts; we give you summer!
So, what have we got up our sleeve for you over the next 4 months? Well, a must-see for May is always our Youth Theatre’s annual production, this year Alice in Wonderland (pg 5). In June, the Guitar Festival makes its return (pg 8) and the opera Caruso and the Quake (pg 10) visits in July so if you fancy your hand at opera singing then you are welcome to join in the pre-show workshop! In July Chumbawamba (yes, Chumbawamba!) perform in the ballroom, and if that doesn’t swing your chandelier, it will certainly swing ours!
For those of you lucky enough to have tickets to Andy Hamilton’s Hat of Doom on the 5th May and the City of London Sinfonia on the 8th May, dates and times can be found in the diary on the back cover but are not included inside this brochure as both performances have sold out.

Truman Capote ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’
Tues 4 May plus film at 2.30pm
Known to most of us as a successful film, come and find out what this novel is really about. Capote was angered by the sanitisation in the film of his rich and cruel novel. Despite its 1940s New York gloss, this is more a Henry James story, with a glamorous veneer concealing a germ of tragedy. Meet the real Holly Golightly, like Capote a ‘hick’ from Alabama trying to survive in a big bad world.
William Shakespeare ‘Othello’
Tues 1 June
Our annual lecture in support of Tolethorpe Theatre. Othello is one of the seminal plays about the nature of real evil, and its power to destroy good people using the medium of suggestion. In the many plays where Shakespeare explores the destruction of the feminine, we have here one of his most poignant of innocents, Desdemona. Come and enjoy a play which is timeless in its exploration of the nature of love, race and betrayal.
Joseph Conrad ‘The Heart of Darkness’ Tues 6 July
Conrad’s novel inspired countless derivatives including the film ‘Apocalypse Now’. Conrad, in his own life, explored the stretches of the River Congo that he gives as the main setting for his novel. His personal journey deep into the heart of Africa and into the depths of his fallen character Kurtz, gives us the definitive dissection of the full downward potential of an innately good man.
Mark KalchRoyal Geographical Society with IBG
Mark Kalch is a professional adventurer and explorer. Expeditions have taken him from Everest to North Africa, from Ethiopia’s Omo Valley to the mighty Amazon and from Australia’s outback to the forests of South-East Asia. He has run big rivers in Southern Africa and trekked for weeks on end in the Andes of Peru, forged trails through dense jungles in East Africa and explored deserted tropical islands off the coast of Australia by sea-kayak. He was part of just the 4th successful team and only the 7th person to have completed a human-powered source to sea journey of the Amazon River. Mark has just returned to the UK after completing a solo expedition in the Islamic Republic of Iran, from it’s northern border to the Persian Gulf. This journey saw Mark on foot through sub-tropical forest, mountain ranges, plateau and desert in one of the most maligned countries on earth.

Alice in WonderlandStamford Youth Theatre
Our Youth Theatre return to the theatre stage with their annual production Alice in Wonderland! Join Alice’s madcap adventures in Wonderland as she chases the White Rabbit, races the Dodo Bird, gets tied up with the Tweedles, raps with a bubble-blowing Caterpillar, and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game! Our Youth Theatre productions are always a spectacular event and extremely popular so it is advised that you book your tickets quickly!
Louisiana Red & Michael Messer
A very special collaboration of two great musicians from contrasting backgrounds, brought together through a passion for playing blues slide guitar and many years of mutual admiration for each others’ work.
Louisiana was born in Alabama and is one of the last great bluesmen still performing, who learned his craft from the fathers and grandfathers of the blues and earned his place via the harsh realities of life. Michael was born in Middlesex and is recognised as one of the leading slide guitarists and blues innovators around the world. His playing encompasses the entire blues history, but is uniquely contemporary and highly individual.
Stacey Kent
Stacey Kent, a best-selling member of the Blue Note roster of recording artists, now boasts six best-selling albums, a string of awards, including the British Jazz Award, The BBC Jazz Award for Best Vocalist and Album of the Year, as well as a fan base that enables her to sell-out concert halls around the world.
Stacey’s last album, Breakfast On the Morning Train, went platinum in France and gold in Germany, and was also nominated for a 2009 Grammy Award. Spring 2010 sees the release of Stacey’s eagerly anticipated new album, Raconte-Moi, on Blue Note. A stunning concert not to be missed.

Digby Fairweather’s Half Dozen starring Paul JonesRockin’ in Rhythm
Icon of blues/pop, Paul began his career with Manfred Mann in 1963 and scored a string of hits starting with 5-4-3-2-1, followed by Doo Wah Diddy, Pretty Flamingo and many other 60s pop classics. For the last 20 years he has been the front man of The Blues Band as well as being a regular radio presenter and actor. He is one of the country’s leading authorities on the blues and also plays a mean blues harmonica. Paul joins Digby Fairweather’s sensational Half Dozen for a performance which celebrates both his music and exciting new arrangements of the great jazz and blues standards they both love.

The presenter of Sky One’s Braniac brings a high octane performance with hilarious real life stories. He has supported some of the country’s biggest names including Stephen. K. Amos, Rhod Gilbert and Scott Capurro.

Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus
This lively show is full of fun, feathers, laughter and excitement and features original music and lots of audience participation! The friendly bus driver leaves us with one simple instruction: “Don’t let the pigeon drive the bus!” However, the Pigeon is very clever and whines, bribes, pleads and even sings a song to get his own way… but will you let him drive?!
The author, Mo Willems, has won six Emmy Awards as a writer and animator for Sesame Street and is the creator of The Cartoon Network’s hit shows Sheep in the Big City and Codename: Kids Next Door.

The first was in 1998. That makes this the 13th year! So, more than 70 of the best acoustic guitar players later, we’re proud to present another great line-up.
Steve Hicks from Leicester – a great teacher and a great player – will be back. He’s been practicing
some basic picking so that he can hit the ground running when it comes to teaching
beginners how to get started.
There are one or two other favourites returning: Wizz Jones and Pete Berryman. Both started out in the 60s and they’re playing as well as ever! Two great players from the former Kicking Mule label will be here: Dave Evans, who hasn’t been seen playing in the UK for quite a while, so we’re expecting a good number of guitar twitchers this year! And Lasse Johansson – one of the finest ragtime guitarists from the 70s. Not to be missed. Continuing a recent trend for us in gypsy jazz, the great Robin Nolan Trio - and we’re ahead of the Samois festival where they will be celebrating the centenary of Django Reinhardt’s birth later in June. A special guest this year will be blues historian Paul Oliver, who will be talking about Conversation With The Blues, his book first published 45 years ago. Michael Roach will hopefully be on hand to demonstrate the Piedmont style (and to promote his latest CD!) And finally, Eric Lugosch will be here demonstrating his accomplished take on the style of Rev Gary Davis. His new CD REVision is just great! Don’t forget that an important feature of the festival is the opportunity to learn from the artists. There will be plenty of workshops aimed at all levels and lots of opportunities to chat with some of the world’s great players. I’ll be there – hope you will be too! David Popple

Martin Harley Band
The Martin Harley Band are an acoustic trio who have achieved cult status with live music fans worldwide thanks to their dynamic live shows and catchy arrangements. Their profile grew dramatically in 2009 when they opened for Brit Award winner James Morrison, and played two critically acclaimed shows on Glastonbury’s famous Acoustic and Avalon stages. Their slide-driven sound blends swinging contemporary americana with heavier acoustic blues-rock and delicate ballads of exceptional beauty. MHB were given the rare honour of permission from cult US songwriter Tom Waits to record a version of his song Chocolate Jesus.

When shop-owner Herr Zangler goes off to Vienna to see his fiancée, his two assistants, Weinberl and Christopher, take the opportunity to abandon the rollmops and pigs’ trotters for an adventure in the city. Throw into the mix Zangler’s infatuated niece Marie, her penniless lover Sonders, a libidinous coachman, a man-hungry widow, a duplicitous manservant, a lovelorn spinster and her equally lovelorn maid, and the stage is set for a frenetic two hours of Stoppard’s trademark verbal gymnastics in a plot of dazzling complexity. With no pun left unturned, no identity unmistaken, and every entendre doubled, this is the playwright at his most playful and hilarious. An amateur performance by our resident theatre company

Caruso and the Quake
Enrico Caruso’s escape from the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. He faces not only his collapsing hotel room, fires and the army gun powdering the city but also his own ghosts. Beautiful storytelling and live opera from from Puccini, Rossini and Leoncavallo combine to reveal the heart behind the legend.

Chumbawamba
Chumbawamba take to the stage once more to celebrate the release of their latest album ABCDEFG. Armed with acoustic guitars, accordion and trumpet, five-part harmonies, a bucketful of attitude, the band are touring to promote this gem. When they got rid of their drum kit and heavy electric gear to experiment with a more acoustic sound the response couldn’t have been more positive. Not only have the followers of their full blown electric days been won over to it, but also folk audiences have come to love it in great numbers. Their discovery of the sheer power and beauty of the human voice has proved to be of huge value to its members and followers. R

Before all the leaves fall off the trees and the summer sun disappears, there is a chance for a great night out dancing to one of the region’s hottest ceilidh bands - The elusive Black Dog.This whirlwind ceilidh band has an experienced caller making the event suitable for anyone who wants to dance or just listen to good music.

For seven years now, top class professional musicians from all over the world have come to Stamford to perform in concerts and also to be mentors for some 20 international students, many of whom are at the start of their professional careers. Professionals and students will be taking part in eight concerts and two Master Classes at various venues in Stamford, including Burghley House, during the Festival from 25 July - 7 August. Tickets for all the concerts are on sale at Stamford Arts Centre.

New work by local potters Pat Armstrong, Rob Bibby, Will Illsley, Carlos Versluys and Katherine Winfrey
Stamford Queen Eleanor School Art & Design 2010
An exhibition to celebrate a year of creativity by the students from Stamford Queen Eleanor School with a selection of pieces from Art, Design, Textiles and Photography subjects demonstrating a diverse range of skills from concept to completed product.
Firecrest Photo
Peter & Carole Leigh have specialised in photographing wildlife (particularly birds) for over 20 years. They do not take images of captive or tamed wildlife and take every precaution to avoid disturbance to their subjects. All photographs are taken on location in the animal’s natural habitat. They have earned widespread respect and a reputation for excellence.
Guild of Fine Artists
Annual summer exhibition of traditionally produced fine art. The guilds members produce various works from the following subjects, landscape, flora ad fauna, animal studies, marine paintings as well as sculpture in bronze. The membership is made from professional and semi professional artists from the East of England and London area including local artists.
Annual Art Class Showcase
A collection of work created by participants of the Arts Centre’s regular Painting and Drawing, Life and Sculpture classes. Come along and have a look at the work of these adult students. Classes represented are tutored by Mike Alabaster, Heather Harrison, David Rushden, Joanna Crawford, Catherine Headley and Jonty Meyer.

Stamford Youth Theatre provides children and young people with a wonderful foundation in theatre making and performing. In a fun and safe environment, areas covered in weekly workshops include improvisation, role play, character development, vocal technique, mime, movement, text and script work. Thanks to fantastic guidance from Martin and Mary as Directors there is always massive enthusiasm and commitment from all members. To start, you will only need one brush, six colours, watercolour paper and a palette. Buying students’ quality paints, rather than artists’ quality will keep the cost down. Make sure you have notes on what to buy as there is a mesmerising choice in the art shop.
You will begin with simple exercises, with Catherine demonstrating, so that you become accustomed to the way watercolour behaves and progress from still-life, to flowers and landscapes. And you will never look back. For improvers and beginners.

You can collect your prepaid tickets from the box office at any time leading up to the performance, or we can post them to you for a charge of 45p.
Discounts
Discounts (priced in brackets) vary from show to show. Generally they are available to Artscene members, children & students, unwaged, over 60s, disabled patrons & their companion. Prices marked with a star indicate a further discount for students and groups of 10 or more (including school/college groups). Occasionally, discounts are unavailable for certain events organised by outside organisations, for which we are only a ticket agent.
Group Bookings
If you are planning to bring a large group to a show, please contact the box office to see if we can help organise your trip or, if there is no star-marked price, if we are able to offer you a discount.
Gift Vouchers
You can buy a Gift Voucher for any amount you require from the box office.
Re-Sales
We regret that we are unable to exchange tickets or to refund money. If an event is sold out, we will try to resell unwanted tickets - an administration fee of £1 per transaction* is charged for this service and we will issue a credit note for you to use against a future purchase. *Only charged if tickets are sold on.
Become a Member
Save money on ticket prices for selected events, films and workshops. You will be supporting the arts in South Kesteven by becoming an Artscene member and will receive discounts and priority booking for a huge variety of arts events. Membership costs £17 per year for one person, £22 for two people. Your membership can also be used at the Guildhall Arts Centre, Grantham. (Occasionally discounts are unavailable; please see discounts section for details.)
Reservations
Tickets for live events (not cinema), may also be provisionally reserved over the phone. Payment must be made within three working days or half an hour before the performance, whichever is sooner. Failure to do so may result in the tickets being released for resale.
Free mailing & emailing list
To join our free postal and emailing list, give your details to the box office and we’ll make sure you’re kept informed. Customers on our mailing list will only receive information about events promoted by Stamford Arts Centre, events sold through our ticket agency or events promoted by South Kesteven District Council.
Room Hire
There are a number of rooms available for private or company hire at Stamford Arts Centre, suitable for a variety of purposes. These range from the Ireson Room, an attractive meeting/conference room ideal for around 16 people, up to the beautifully restored Ballroom, with a capacity of around 200 - ideal for parties, dances, meetings etc. Details of our rooms are on www.stamfordartscentre.com or contact Emma Oglesbee for a brochure on 01780 480846 or email [email protected]
Access
The ballroom, gallery, box office and coffee shop are all on the ground floor and easily accessible. There is a platform lift to the theatre with two spaces for wheelchairs in the theatre. Please let the box office know in advance if you wish to reserve a wheelchair space and if you require an adjoining seat for a companion. The theatre has an induction loop – hearing aids should be switched to the T position. Toilet facilities are available close to both the theatre and the ballroom and we have baby changing facilities. If you need further information or assistance, please talk to the Box Office staff prior to your visit who will be glad to help. The front step is now ramped for improved access. Please note that no children under the age of two are allowed in the theatre/cinema. If you have a child of 8 or under at a workshop we recommend you do not leave the building. Sorry no under 2s in the theatre.

A mile off the A1, Stamford is easy to find. Parking is available at Wharf Road, Cattle Market, Bath Row and St Leonard’s St car parks. All are free after 6pm (see map). There is parking for disabled drivers close to the Arts Centre in St Mary’s Street and in nearby St George’s Square.
