Plaster Separators and Sediment Traps are designed to prevent substances such as plaster/sediment from reaching drains and blocking drainpipes. These products are usually located in conjunction with stainless workbenches and trough basins. Solid particles are separated from the water and directed to the bottom of the receptacle where they stay.

A stainless steel surface must be cleaned periodically if it is to retain its shine and appearance as well as to prevent local corrosion. Discolouration and deposits can occur on the stainless surface if water or solutions of synthetic deter-gents, etc., are allowed to evaporate on it. Patches of rust are not often associated with corrosion on the stainless steel but can in most cases be related to an iron or carbon steel object being placed on the surface, whereby corroded prod-ucts from the object become affi xed to it.

Another reason is the high iron content and iron particles in the water being used giving rise to rust after evaporating. Stainless steel exhibits a certain sensitivity to local corrosion called pitting when exposed to environments with chloride content such as soda. For this reason, these substances must be removed from the surface immediately.

Strong mineral acid solutions and some organic acids can cause general corrosion of a stainless surface. This corrosion can manifest itself in the form of rust patches but occurs in general as dull greyish tones on the surface and even as a ragged surface in serious cases.

Normal careSprinkle some dry powdered detergent, such as washing powder or a mild scouring powder, on the surface. Rub the powder lightly on the steel surface with a damp cloth or sponge. Remove the cleaner thoroughly with cold water, wipe dry the steel surface with a dry soft cloth. Discolouration after drying is an indication that the surface is not clean and the treatment must be repeated. Heavily soiled surfaces may require several treatments.

Note. Do not rinse the surface with warm water as this will cause discolouration as evaporation will take place easily. Do not leave the stainless steel surface to air dry.

Removal of lime depositsLime deposits occurring due to the evaporation of water from surfaces can be removed using one of the following solu-tions.- Household vinegar- Vinegar essence 10%- Nitric acid solution (one part HNO3 to 4 parts water)

Note. Good ventilation should be provided when using nitric acid. Otherwise, the same directions for handling strong acids apply. After treating with one of the solutions above, rinse the surface thoroughly with cold water and then dry with a soft cloth.

Removing rust depositsRecent rust deposits can be removed from the stainless steel surface using a mild scouring powder. Rub the dry scour-ing powder lightly against the steel surface with a damp cloth and then rinse with cold water. Dry with a soft cloth.

If rust has been allowed to remain for a long time on the stainless steel a certain burn-in can occur, resulting in perma-nent discolouration after the rust has been removed as above.
