STAGE 1 OUTDOOR ED STUDENTS HANG TEN @ PICTURESQUE MIDDLETON

Our Stage 1 Outdoor Education Class undertook a three-day Surfing Camp to beautiful Middleton on the Fleurieu Peninsula this term.

We spent our days at Middleton Beach, beginning each morning with a two-hour surfing lesson with qualified instructors from ‘South Coast Surf Academy’. We then enjoyed lunch on the beach before going out for another session in the afternoons!

We were blessed with beautiful weather and by the end of the trip everyone had gained a lot of confidence in the water and

had also vastly improved their technical skills. On the final night of camp, the group went for a long walk along Goolwa Beach, admiring the spectacular scenery that our coastline has to offer.

Students not only developed sound surfing skills at the camp, but also learnt a lot about working as a team, which was great preparation for their Bushwalking Expedition to The Grampians National Park (Victoria) which will take place next term.

I HAVE PUT MY FOOT DOWN ON NIGHT-TIME SCREEN TIME!

I write this newsletter article on the eve of our Athletics Carnival. We are very much looking forward to wonderful weather and a great day of healthy competition, maximum involvement and a day filled with the great community spirit for which Gleeson College is renowned for.

I know that the re-schedule of any major event can impact families, so I thank you for the changes that may have been necessitated by our postponing of this event two weeks ago. Given today’s forecast I believe that we made the right call! I would like to thank Candice Mitchell

and her dedicated team of helpers for the wonderful organisation of this carnival and we look forward to reporting the outcome of the day in next week's issue of The Globe. Thank you also to the House Captains for their great organisation and enthusiasm.

Open NightAs you would be aware next Tuesday 17 March we are holding our Open Night from 4-8pm. To facilitate the planning and organisation of this event students will be dismissed at 1.05pm, as was outlined in a letter to all families. I know that many students will be staying at school and showcasing a wide array of learning activities and I thank you in advance for your willingness to contribute in this important way to our community. I also extend an invitation to all current parents to visit the College on Open Night. Some of you may not have been into the school for some time and the Open Night presents a wonderful opportunity for all our community to visit our great College.

Screen Time!Last weekend I put my foot down with my 13-year-old son. We had a long conversation (read argument) about the amount of time that he was spending on his MacBook. Sound familiar? A recent study of over 10,000 young people in Norway has found that there is a direct link to increased screen time and a lack of quality sleep for adolescents; and that in fact this constitutes a major public health concern. In particular teens who used a computer or mobile phone in the last hour before they went to bed were 53% more likely to take more than 60 minutes to fall asleep than those who had not; and they were also 52% more likely to lose out on two hours or more of sleep.

Limiting screen time and the use of social media in particular for teenagers is one of the most difficult things facing households today. In the face of compelling studies, such as the one I have outlined, it might be useful however to take stock of the habits of the young people in your home and then bravely facing up to the conversation. I am in this one with you as a parent of two teenage boys, but I know that this is one conversation definitely worth having for their long term well-being.

In relation to online safety, on Wednesday this week all our Year 8 and 9 students attended a very powerful presentation from Sonya Ryan from the Carly Ryan Foundation, which outlined both the dangers of online ‘grooming’, as well as practical tips for staying safe. As I say, it was a very moving and powerful presentation. I urge parents of Year 8 and 9 students to have a conversation with their daughter or son about this issue in the context of Sonya’s message.

THE NEXT REVOLUTION IN SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY - BYODThe expansion of the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Policy to a school-wide focus this year has seen a significant majority of students take up the opportunity to bring their own device. These students have embraced the notion of travelling to each lesson with an appropriate device to engage in their learning utilising a range of ICT tools/applications.

A focus for 2015 is to provide teachers with some strategies to enhance their classroom pedagogy to include the embedding of various technologies. Student devices are being used in subjects across the curriculum for activities ranging from basic research and peer assessment to making use of various applications and web-based tools now available to them.

Teachers have been adapting formative and summative tasks to include some sort of technology. Miss Spiroulias’ Stage 1 Legal Studies Class have been asked to discuss a current legal issue and to provide evidence of their research by utilising their choice of software - in the form of a Blog, Photo Story, PowerPoint, newsletter or any other appropriate software. One Stage 1 student, Bridget Costello (11 MSSPI) created a four-page website using the web tool, wix.com - a free website template tool. Bridget chose to incorporate a YouTube video, a photo gallery, a blog page, a response page and a resources page, along with her research on the topic of Marriage Laws in Australia. The result was a well written, planned and presented website.

Although students are bringing their devices to school, this does not mean the end of the traditional school desktops which are currently being utilised for specialist Information Technology subjects. Students are however able to complete the work required in their subjects on their own devices during study lessons at Senior level.

The adoption of a full-school BYOD policy this year at Gleeson College has some exciting potential for learning in English, and the reality of all students in a given class with access to electronic devices and

the internet in every lesson has allowed for a change in pedagogy and structure of tasks in new ways. Ms McCarthy’s Stage 1 English Class this week used the web-based collaborative tool TodaysMeet to share ideas in real time in the classroom, allowing all members of the class to post a contribution in a 140 character message, which can be accessed and seen by all other members of the class. The Stage 1 Class has been using this tool to offer ideas about their current class novel, in preparation for their essay writing. TodaysMeet also enables the teacher to save a transcript of the discussion board for future reference, saving valuable ideas generation in a public space that can be accessed by any students who are

Stage 1 students can see their posts come up in real time and the teacher is able to guide the students using the electronic whiteboard at the front of the room.

absent on that day, to help them catch up on their learning.

Teachers will utilise many more easy-to-use and engaging web-based tools such as these in our classrooms in the future, and our BYOD policy makes this possible.

YEAR 8 RETREAT: ‘TO ACT JUSTLY, LOVE TENDERLY AND WALK HUMBLY’

The theme for this year’s Retreat was ‘To act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly’. This verse comes from Micah 6:8 and was one of the favourite biblical verses of Archbishop Gleeson. Year 8 Religious Education teachers ran the three sessions: Mr Civetta - act justly, Mr Sellers - love tenderly and Mr Coscia - walk humbly.

The aim was to unpack these three phrases and relate them to the Gleeson 10, in which case our new Year 8 students not only learned about the meaning of the biblical verse but also engaged with the Gleeson 10, one of our key documents that directs what we do and how we behave at Gleeson College.

During the day, the students also worked with members of the student social action team. These students, who are in Years 11 and 12, are deeply involved in social justice and community service. They assisted the staff facilitators to present aspects of each workshop and worked with small groups of Year 8 students during each of the breakout sessions. The day was not entirely theological, as the students also participated in several ‘ice-breaker’ games and sporting activities during their lunchtime break. This day was the first time that all of the Year 8 students had been together away from the College.

The Year 8 Retreat banner was also prepared by members of the College Youth Ministry team and over the next week, the Year 8 students will be signing this banner and writing a few words to describe themselves. The banner will follow them to each year level Retreat and finally it will be taken to the Year 12 Graduation dinner. It is often quite interesting for students, when they are in Year 12, to see what they wrote about themselves when they were in Year 8.

STAGE 2 OUTDOOR ED: PADDLE BOARDING CAMP

In Week 6 of this term, the Stage 2 Outdoor Education Class embarked on a three-day Paddle Boarding Camp at Kingston Park.

Although the weather was a little windy, the sun was shining and a fantastic time was had by all. It was a perfect opportunity for the group to not only develop their technical skills, but their camp craft and team building skills as well.

On the final evening the group went for a wander along the local beach trails, which educated us on the Indigenous history and use of the area. We are all looking forward to our Bushwalking Camp next term, which will be another wonderful learning experience for us all!
