THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ST. FLORIAN PARISH - JULY 1, 2018

Jairus’ only concern is that Jesus heal his daughter before it is too late. The request that Jesus lay His hands on her reflects the Jewish sense of the capacity of the human body to mediate God’s grace and power. Healings in Scripture often occur not by word only but by physical contact. Jairus’ request is that his daughter may get well (literally, “be healed” or “be saved”) and live (“live” meaning fullness of salvation and eternal life that Jesus came to give). Jairus’ desire that his daughter be restored to physical health reflects a deeper human longing for ultimate deliverance from death. This woman’s predicament: her discharge has left her in a perpetual state of ritual impurity, according to Mosaic Law. Anything she touches or sits on becomes unclean; others avoid contact with her for fear that touching her would make them unclean. If she was married, sexual union is forbidden to her and her husband. She is also prohibited from entering the Temple to worship with God’s people. So, what she has heard about Jesus has stirred her to move from curiosity and superstition to faith. Even garments can be vehicles of Jesus’ healing power. Jesus questions this intrusion; for, He does not want the recipient to slip away with only a physical healing. The

fullness of healing, physical as well as spiritual (holistic) occurs only in a personal encounter with Him. What made the woman’s touch unlike that of the crowd was her faith. Jesus affectionately reassures her: “Daughter, your faith has saved you.” Her faith has opened her to receive not only physical healing but also the ultimate salvation of body and soul. “Go in peace”; that is, live in harmony and well-being. Mark’s Gospel has clearly established that Jesus wants to be troubled! And those who “trouble” Him are the one who will experience His healing power. Jesus assures Jairus…“do not be afraid, just have faith” (literally, “only believe”). Jesus is calling Jairus to a deeper faith. Faith is the disposition that opens the way for His mighty works to be accomplished. “The child is not dead but asleep.” “Sleep” is Jesus’ characteristic way of referring to death. Jesus is calling His listeners to recognize that death is not the ultimate end of human life; it is only a temporary phase. His raising of the dead child is a sign that despair and terror at the finality of death are no longer an inevitable part of human life! MyLove&Prayers,

Fr. Ralph-Elias

Missionary Cooperation Plan Fr. Lizardo from Peru

July 14th & 15th

This year's Missionary Cooperation Plan (MCP) Appeal is the weekend of July 14th & 15th. The second collection will be for this purpose. Please, if you are issuing a check, make it payable to St. Florian Parish and mark MCP in the memo space. This Appeal is facilitated by The Society for

the Propagation of the Faith on behalf of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. We welcome missionary Fr. Lizardo from Peru who will tell us about their work and ministry. I Thank you (in advance) so very much for your generosity! Fr. Ralph-Elias

The Augustinian Missions of Northern Peru Pope Francis has called for a renewed commitment within the Church to missionary work in developing countries. “Where does Jesus send us?” he asked pilgrims at his first World Youth Day. “There are no borders, no limits: He sends us to everyone.” For over 50 years, the friars of the Midwest Augustinian Province have been sent as missionaries and stewards to the faithful and needy in Northern Peru. Recognizing that the call to service pushes us beyond our borders, the Midwest Augustinians accepted the invitation from Pope John XXIII to rebuild the Church in the impoverished regions of Peru in 1962. Today, we serve over 600,000 people daily, spanning from the desert area of the Pacific Coast to the rugged terrains of the Andes Mountains. Thanks to the charitable gifts we receive from parishioners in the United States, we are able to ordain native clergy, who staff parishes, teach in religious educational institutions, and promote social justice projects. We are also in the midst of constructing the campus of St. Augustine High School, in Trujillo, which will provide a much-needed source of revenue in years to come. We have also begun programs to prevent and treat diseases, provide clean water to the poorest of the poor in the desert, and promote women’s rights and equality. Thank you for including the Augustinians in your parish’s missionary appeal this year. With your prayers and financial contributions, we can truly move one step closer toward reaching God’s Kingdom on Earth. God bless you, and your Diocese, family, and parish!

Fr. Lizardo

WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED

Question: There seems to be a lot of division in some Christian churches over moral issues, especially abortion, ordination, and end-of-life care. If all Christians follow the Gospel of Jesus, why is there such a difference of opinion?

Answer: There is always a struggle between culture and religion, and part of that struggle is politics. To

be politically correct means that you must embrace the secular virtue of the moment so that you are "enlightened," "sensitive," "aware," and, most

importantly, "open-minded." Unfortunately, common sense can be sacrificed in the race to be "PC." Some factions within Christian denominations have tried to redefine tradition, history, and biblical teaching to bend it around the politically correct religious thinking of the day. On the life issues that you mention, there are those who began with their own conclusions and have tried to bend theology around their conclusions. This is possible in part because of a lack of a central teaching authority and partly because society has become apathetic to these issues. It will result in a lot of division, factions, and schisms. The Gospel calls all believers to embrace the truth, to turn from sin, and to seek holiness and justice. No matter how hard some may try, a square peg will not fit a round hole. The camel cannot fit through the eye of the needle.

Prayer of Thanksgiving for Freedom Freedom is enshrined in our US Constitution. The First Amendment of our constitution protects our freedom of speech. However, our speech may not infringe upon another's freedom. Freedom does have its limits. And we must protect everyone's freedoms, not just ours. On this 4th of July, let us remember from whom all our freedoms originate, our good and gracious God. Let us pray…

God, giver of all good gifts,

Help us to be thankful for rest and food, and remember that, in all we do or say,

you are with us, here this day. We are thankful for all you do

and for everything you have given us. But above all we are thankful for our freedoms

and the ability to protect others' freedom. We are free because of you.

We ask for your continued blessing on all your creation. Through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.
