  • Year B

    The Year of Mark

On the 1st Sunday of Advent 2014 we begin Year B in the Lectionary. This continues until the Feast of Christ the King in 2015. It is often called the Year of Mark because the Gospel of Mark is the one most frequently read in Year B on Sundays and Feast days for the Liturgy of the Word at Mass.

  • CARMELITE BOOK SERVICE Boars Hill, Oxford OX1 5HB

The Carmelite Book Service was set up as a world-wide mail order service in 1984, (on-line since 1997), to provide all books in print on Carmelite Spirituality to the whole family of Carmel. These include not only books on Carmelite Spirituality but also the Christian classics, books on the English Spiritual tradition, Celtic Spirituality, Eastern Spirituality and Contemporary Spirituality. It is owned, maintained and managed by the Order and is a registered charity. As well as being online a printed catalogue is available upon request.

    Notes for 2015

Lectionary Sunday: Cycle B. Weekday: Cycle I

Ordinary Time Weeks in Ordinary Time consist in 33 weeks. There are 6 weeks before Lent beginning 12 January and ending 17 February (Tuesday before Ash Wednesday). There are 27 weeks after Eastertime resuming from the 8th week on 25 May (Monday after Pentecost Sunday).

The Celebration of the Eucharist It is most desirable that the faithful, just as the priest himself is bound to do, receive the Lords Body from hosts consecrated at the same Mass (GIRM No 86). Holy Communion has a fuller form as a sign when it is distributed under both kinds.

Before receiving Communion a person should abstain from all food and drink, with the exception of water and medicine, for at least one hour. However, a priest who celebrates Mass twice or more times may consume something before the second and other celebrations even though there is not an hours interval. The elderly and those who are suffering from some illness, as well as those who care for them, may receive the Eucharist even if within the previous hour they have consumed something.

A person who has received Communion may only receive once again the same day provided that they participate in a Eucharistic Celebration

On Solemnities which are holydays of Obligation, on Sundays of Advent, Lent and Eastertide and during the Paschal Triduum, all Ritual, Votive, Requiem and Funeral Masses are forbidden. On Solemnities which are not holydays of Obligation, on Ash Wednesday, during Holy Week, on days within the Easter Octave and on Sundays of Christmastide and Sundays in Ordinary Time, funeral Masses are permitted but Ritual, Votive and Requiem Masses are not. When two obligatory Memorials coincide they are both reduced to Optional Memorials and consequently either one is of choice.

When a Solemnity falls on a Saturday or Monday, the Mass to be celebrated on Saturday or Sunday evening respectively, is the Sunday Mass. Since this ORDO covers many countries and dioceses it is not possible to indicate when a Solemnity is transferred and celebrated on the nearest Sunday. It is advisable therefore to consult the local Church calendar.

Periods of Silence within the Eucharistic Celebration

Number 45 of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (Third and Amended Typical Edition, 2008) prescribes: Sacred silence also, as part of the celebration, is to be observed at the designated times. Its purpose, however, depends on the time it occurs in each part of the celebration. Thus within the Act of Penitence and again after the invitation to pray, all recollect themselves; but at the conclusion of a reading or the homily, all meditate briefly on what they have heard; then after Communion, they praise and pray to God in their hearts. Even before the celebration itself, it is commendable that silence be observed in the church, in the sacristy, in the vesting room, and in adjacent areas, so that all may dispose themselves to carry out the sacred action in a devout and fitting manner. Paragraph 30 of the Liturgy Constitution, Sacrosanctum Concilium, likewise prescribes: And at the proper times all should observe a reverent silence. Number 56 of the General Instruction specifies better the importance of silence within the Liturgy of the Word, while number 78 makes the same clear for the Liturgy of the Eucharist: The Eucharistic Prayer demands that all listen to it with reverence and in silence. Number 84 then underscores the importance of the observance of silence as a means of good preparation for the reception of Holy Communion: The priest prepares himself by a prayer, said quietly, that he may fruitfully receive Christs Body and Blood. The faithful do the same, praying silently. Finally, the same attitude is proposed for the period of thanksgiving after Communion: When the distribution of Communion is finished, as circumstances suggest, the priest and faithful spend some time praying privately. If desired, a psalm or other canticle of praise or a hymn may also be sung by the entire congregation. (n. 88)

    Sunday

On the first day of each week, which is known as the Lord's Day, the Church, by an apostolic tradition that draws its origin from the very day of the resurrection of Christ, celebrates the paschal mystery. Hence, Sunday must be considered a primordial feast day. Because of its special importance, the celebration of Sunday gives way only to Solemnities and Feasts of the Lord; indeed, the Sundays of Advent, Lent and Easter have precedence over all Feasts of the Lord and over all Solemnities. In fact, Solemnities occurring on these Sundays are transferred to the following Monday unless they occur on Palm Sunday or on the Sunday of the Lord's Resurrection.

    Suffrages for the Dead

On the death of a religious, even a novice, the Superior of the House is to advise the Provincial who in turn is to notify all the Monasteries of the Province as well as the Superior General.

As soon as a Monastery is notified concerning the death of a religious (including Bishops who were members of the Order), the deceased should be prayed for at the community Mass and at Evening Prayer during the intercessions. Every house in the Order is to offer one Mass for the repose of his soul.

For Superiors General and Definitors a Mass is to be celebrated in community in all the Monasteries of the Order and each Priest should offer one Mass for them. For the Holy Father or the local Bishop a community Mass is to be offered.

For a religious of the Province who dies each priest in the Province is to offer a Mass and each community is to recite the Liturgy of the Hours for the repose of his soul. For a deceased Carmelite Nun belonging to a Monastery under the jurisdiction of the Provincial, each community in the region is to offer a Mass. For a deceased parent of one of our religious, each community in the region is to offer a Mass. As a matter of charity we should remember in our Masses and prayers all who have at any time belonged to our Province.

On the commemoration of all the dead of the Order, all the Masses in our Monasteries are to be offered for the dead. Once a month, liturgical prescriptions permitting, our communities should offer a Mass and recite the Office of the Dead for the deceased members of our Order, as well and for our deceased relatives and benefactors. The Office of the Dead replaces the liturgical Office of the Day. Compline is of the weekday.

A reminder is placed in the Ordo on the eve of the anniversary of the death of those religious who have served in the Province since 1900; may they rest in peace.

Ternary Office The Office for the Dead and Mass for Ternary intentions may be said instead of the Office of the day on one free weekday in the month during the period called Ordinary Time. This is the period outside Advent the Christmas season and outside Lent and Easter period. Compline is of the weekday.

The Salve Regina The SALVE REGINA is to be sung in each community on Saturday evenings during the year and either on the vigils or on Solemnities of Our Lady.

Season of Lent The weekdays of Lent take precedence over the Memorials of Saints; hence Memorials which occur in Lent are considered as optional for that year. However, they may be celebrated as follows:

at the Office of Readings, after the reading from the Fathers with its Response (taken from the Proper. of the Season), the Proper. reading of the Saint, with its Response and the Collect of the Saint may be said. at Lauds and Vespers, the Antiphon and Collect of the Saint may be added to the Collect of the Day under the one conclusion. at Mass the Collect of the Saint may be used in place of the Collect of the Day

The Alleluia is omitted both in the Liturgy of the Hours and in the celebration of Mass.

    18 ASH WEDNESDAY

Ash Wednesday is a day of penance for the whole Church of the Roman Rite; it is a day of Fast and Abstinence.

Week 4 of the Psalter is used from today until Saturday. However, the Psalms and Canticle at Lauds may be taken from Friday of week 3 of Psalter because of their penitential character

The blessing and distribution of Ashes take place after the Gospel and Homily; the Penitential Rite is omitted. When Mass is not celebrated it is appropriate that the rite be preceded by a Liturgy of the Word (Entrance Antiphon, Collect and Readings from the Mass) and concluded with the Prayer of the Faithful Violet Psalter Week 4. However, the psalms of Friday of Week 3 may be used at Morning Prayer. Mass: Proper. Preface: Lent III or IV.

Mass without a congregation may not be celebrated today. The Chrism Mass is the only one that takes place in the morning. Holy Communion may be distributed only during Mass; it may be brought to the sick at any time during the day. The Easter Triduum begins with the Evening Mass of the Lords Supper. This Mass is celebrated with the participation of the whole community and all the priests concelebrating. 3 GOOD FRIDAY Celebration of the Lords Passion

Day of Fast and Abstinence of the Church

Mass is not celebrated today. Holy Communion may be distributed only during the celebration of the Lords Passion; it may be taken at any hour of the day to those who are sick and cannot take part in the ceremony.

The celebration takes place in the afternoon, about three oclock unless pastoral reasons suggest a later hour. Red vestments are used; the altar should be completely bare. After the distribution of Holy Communion the Blessed Sacrament is taken to the place where it is to be reserved, the Altar is stripped but the Crucifix and Candles are left on it.

Stations of the Cross, processions in honour of the Lords Passion, the commemoration of the Sorrows of Our Lady and other popular devotions that are of pastoral importance are of great significance and through judicious use of texts and music lead the people to true liturgical participation.

    Liturgy of the Hours: Proper

The Office of Readings and Morning Prayer should, if possible, be celebrated publicly and with the participation of the people.

The Easter Vigil There are four parts to the rite: the service of light, the liturgy of the Word, the liturgy of baptism and the liturgy of the Eucharist. It should take place during the night so that it does not begin before nightfall and ends before dawn. The celebration of the Mass without the Vigil ceremonies is forbidden The Vigil may be celebrated is Churches and Oratories where the other ceremonies of the Sacred Triduum did not take place; it may be omitted even when the other ceremonies did take place. It must be performed where there is a Baptismal font. At least three readings from the Old Testament should be read; in more urgent cases, at least two. The reading from Exodus may never be omitted. At the Gospel incense may be used but candles are not used. The Mass at night, although celebrated before midnight, is the Easter Mass of the Resurrection and satisfies the law of hearing Mass on Easter Sunday. Holy Communion may be distributed during the Solemn Mass only. The Easter Vigil takes the place of the Office of Readings. Those who are not present at the Vigil should include at least four of the readings (more fittingly from Exodus, Ezechiel, St. Paul and the Gospel) together with their canticles and prayers, concluding with the Te Deum and the Collect of the day.
