Watch Your StepThe autumn foliage is a colorful sight, but it can also
create a fall hazard when combined with the season’srainy, cold weather. Be mindful that walkways canbecome slick surfaces when they fill up with wet leaves.

The Lowdownon Elections
Every four years, Americanshead to the polls in Novemberto cast ballots for thenation’s president.
Late fall was historicallyconsidered a good time forelections because the harvestwas mostly over and winterweather hadn’t set in yet. Thedays varied, however, until1845, when Congress set thefirst Tuesday after the firstMonday in November as theday for presidential elections.
Enjoy these additional factsabout elections:
• Prior to 1804, thepresidential candidatewho received the second-highest number of electoralvotes was named thevice president.
• The only bachelorelected president wasJames Buchanan.
• John F. Kennedy wasthe youngest electedU.S. president at 43.Ronald Reagan was theoldest at 73.
• The only president andvice president not electedto either office was GeraldFord. He became vicepresident after Spiro Agnewresigned and becamepresident when RichardNixon resigned.
• American astronauts on theInternational Space Stationcan vote via secure email.

Optimal LivingUpdate-Protect Your Back
Everyone knows someonethat has had a back injury.Whether it is from liftingsomething too heavy, sitting toolong, or just starts hurting, thereare many causes for backinjuries. The most commoncauses of back injuries are: Poorposture, poor body mechanics, and poor lifestyle choices. Thereare many ways to prevent a backinjury from happening, and thismonth we will talk aboutposture. Proper posture is soimportant! When standing:Have your shoulders relaxed, knees slightly bent, andmaintain the natural curves ofthe spine. When sitting: Haveyour feet should rest on thefloor, and use a lumbar roll (or arolled up towel) between yourlow back and your chair. Sittingactually puts more pressure onyour back than standing, so takeshort walks, or stand upthroughout the day. When lyingdown: Rest on your sides withyour feet slightly bent towardyour chest, or lay on your backwith a pillow underneath yourknees. It is also important toknow that using more than onepillow under your head cancause increased pressure in thelow back area. Small dailychanges can lead to bigdecreases in pain and injury!Next month we will talk aboutthe effects of body mechanicshave on reducing back injuries.

A Note From theExecutive Director
Dear residents and families,It’s tradition to show your
appreciation for others onThanksgiving, but don’t let yourdisplays of gratitude end whendinner is over. Here are someother ways to express yourthankfulness for all the goodthings in your life:
Volunteer. Finding a cause thatresonates with you is the firststep to giving back. Volunteeringhere at All American is a greatway to actively show yoursupport.
Donate. We are holding afood drive the month ofNovember because we aremaking Thanksgiving baskets forneedy families in our area. Please be on the look out for aletter going out with moredetails. Our residents are goingto be putting these basketstogether and delivering them tosome of the families before theholiday.
Reflect. Alone, or with familyand friends, take a few minutesto reflect on all the blessings inyour life. Whether big or small, remembering all that you haveto be thankful for will encourageyou to pay it forward thisholiday season.
Sincerely,Susy M. PaivaExecutive Director
Culinary CornerAll of us here in the kitchen
get really excited about goodsoup. There is nothing betterthan a big bowl of hot soup andcrusty bread on a cold fall orwinter day. It’s comforting, hearty and nutritious. All of thesoups here at All AmericanRaynham are homemade, starting with freshly choppedvegetables including celery, onion, garlic and carrots. Sincethis is the foundation for manyof our creations, you will findone of our chefs prepping soupduring a portion of each day.
Soups are an excellent choicefor a lunch or dinner selection, especially if you are perhaps notinterested in the “special of theday” or simply enjoy thatparticular day’s soup. Pairedwith a grilled cheese, delisandwich or salad thiscombination can make for avery enjoyable meal.
The menus this fall andwinter will occasionally feature aspecific soup and sandwichpairing. Rather than simplyoffering a soup of the day, wehave created a combination thatgo very well together. This ideawas generated from monthlydining team meetings where thechefs collectively provide inputfor the menus. In the comingweeks you will also see a fewmore ideas that we are tryingout. I look forward to the nextresident council meeting wherewe can hear your thoughts andsuggestions.
