Thursday, October 4 Gems of Granby – Including Newgate Prison and Beer Tasting at Cambridge House Brew Pub

To continue our series of exploring our own “Captivating Connecticut”, we’ll travel to another town in the north central part of our state by heading to explore the “Gems of Granby”. We’ll start with a guided visit to Old Newgate Prison, a colonial copper mine site believed to be the first copper mine in America & a former prison during the American Revolutionary War. Closed for renovation in 2009, this National Historic Landmark and State Archaeological Preserve was just re-opened. Lunch will follow at the Cambridge House Brew Pub where we’ll receive a delicious lunch as well as learn about the beer brewing process at their small brewery and participate in a beer sampling. Choose from beer battered fish & chips, Granby cheesesteak or BBQ pork sandwich. After lunch, our tour guide, Bob Marx from Landmark Tours, will show us a few surprise “gems” in his beautiful rural hometown, before a stop at Lost Acres Orchards where you will have some time to shop for produce, baked goods including their famous pies, and items from the jelly cupboard. After saying goodbye to Bob, if we have time, we’ll make a last stop at Grass Roots Ice Cream for ice cream on your own before heading home. $47.00 residents, $52.00 non-residents includes bus, entry to museum, lunch & beer tasting. Thursday, October 4, Senior Information Expo, Higganum

If you missed the trip to Granby, we are offering an alternative trip to the 4th annual Senior Expo hosted by Youth & Family Services of Haddam-Killingworth. This event features live music, over 40 vendors (most of whom give away free gifts), presentations, flu shots & informational material. Free coffee, juice & donuts in the morning. Pizza, salad & dessert for lunch. Come & learn about resources & services available for seniors, care givers and their families. FREE EVENT. Meet at St. George Church rear lot at 9:30 a.m. & return at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Wednesday, October 10 Lunch Bunch LaMarea Restaurant Old Saybrook

This wonderful family restaurant offers authentic Northern & Southern Italian cuisine. The husband and wife owners have created a menu inspired by their Italian heritage. We will stop in Clinton prior to lunch to learn a bit of history of our neighboring town of Clinton. We will stroll through the Adam Stanton House and General Store on Main as well as the Elisha White House, lovingly called “Old Brick”. Tuesday, October 16 Comedy and Dancing at the Aqua Turf, Plainfield

For this funny (but clean) show, Chris Rich & Tom Gilmore will leave you laughing in your seat. Chris is the winner of the “Ladies of Laughter”, a national competition held at Caesar’s Palace, and was given a long-term spot on Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend”. Tom Gilmore is one of Boston’s top comedians & has been seen on Showtime, A&E and performs on numerous cruise ships. The “Perfect Timing Band” will begin and end the day with outstanding dance music & you’ll be encouraged to get up onto the dance floor. Built in 1836 for Amon & Sylvia Bradley, this home was a residence for the Bradley/Barnes family for 137 years. Amon was a Southbury entrepreneur and he & Sylvia raised their three children in the homestead. Visitors come from all over the world to experience this one-of-a-kind example of an originally furnished historic American Home. The Barnes Museum also houses an extensive archival collection of historic diaries & documents including letters from the Civil War. Thursday, November 8 A Salute to Veterans, 100 Years of Music, Log Cabin, Holyoke, Massachusetts

No one deserves more honor & respect than our nation’s veterans & Joey Vincent honors their achievement & sacrifice with his Salute to Veterans’ Show. He’ll take us on a century-long journey performing the music that has followed our armed forces wherever they’ve served from WW I to the Gulf War. Performer Joey Vincent is a one-man show, blending comedy, impressions, singing, dancing & trumpet playing. You’ll enjoy a family style lunch in the area’s most beautiful setting with breathtaking views of the Easthampton Valley. Wednesday, December 19 Charming Cheshire at Christmastime

Cheshire is an area town rich in history and beauty especially at Christmastime. The Cheshire Historical Society, which is housed in the 1785 Hitchcock Phillips House, will provide us with a guided tour to experience what life looked like in the 18th century & learn about the heritage of Cheshire. As an added treat, in December, the local Garden Clubs decorate the home for Christmas. After the tour we’ll continue to be immersed in Cheshire history as we have lunch at the Waverly Inn. Built in 1896, The Inn has been a staple in Cheshire since the 19th century & offers guests a dining experience immersed in rich Connecticut history. Specializing in American fare, the experienced chefs put care and creativity into every dish. You will be offered several options from their lunch menu. Indicate your choice on the registration form. Just in time for open enrollment, on Tuesday, October 16, 9:00 a.m., John Cicarella, our Medicare benefits specialist will be here for an educational discussion on many important issues related to Medicare guidelines and to review new updates to insurance programs for the upcoming year. MEALS ON WHEELS 17TH ANNUAL LASAGNA DINNER: The Annual Meals on Wheels Lasagna Dinner to honor our troops and veterans will be held on Friday, November 16th, 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. at the Community Center. The meal will feature Larry Santamaria’s famous vegetable or meat lasagna. Proceeds will benefit Meals on Wheels. Tickets are available at the Community Center office or the GIV office at 310 State Street. Adults $16.00, Children (under 10) $6.00. Veterans are free with a reservation before November 6th.

WANT TO LEARN TO PLAY MAH JONGG? - Our summer “Learn to Play Mah Jongg” session was so successful, Donna Carangelo has agreed to offer another six- week session of Beginner Mah Jongg lessons on Wednesdays, from October 10 through November 14 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.. Sign up in the office to learn how to play this exciting game that is great for helping keep your mind sharp.

FALL BOCCE: Fall Bocce is in full swing now with some beautiful fall days anticipated. Players meet at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesdays at Chittenden Park. New players are always welcome & can register for $10.00 in the office. Fee includes the Bocce Banquet scheduled for Tuesday, October 30, 5:00 p.m. at the Community Center with a buffet meal catered by our own Larry Santamaria who offers a variety to please everyone’s taste. SHORELINE SPIRITUALITY DISCUSSION GROUP: The Shoreline Spirituality Discussion Group is a self-directed body of diverse individuals seeking spiritual growth through open discussions, free expressions of thoughts & ideas regarding previously agreed-upon topics while expressing care, kindness, respect & compassion for ourselves, others & our world. This group is not based on any religion, but is open to anyone who has an interest in expanding & sharing their spiritual journey. INTRODUCTION TO TAI CHI DEMONSTRATION - On Friday, November 16th from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Exercise Room, Dr. Martin Reichgut will present a discussion and demonstration on introduction to Tai Chi, the ancient Chinese martial art used to improve physical well-being, manage stress, and defend against the confrontations of everyday life.
