WheelSpeedandRPMSensors:

TheLCDMotorsportDisplaymaybeconnectedtoarangeofproximityandmagneticsensorstomeasure,forinstance,wheelortransmissionspeeds.ThesesensorsareusedtomeasurewheelorshaftrotationinordertodisplaythespeedinMPHorRPM.Thesensorprovidesanelectricalpulsetothesystemeachtimeatargetobject,suchasaCVjointboltorarareearthmagnet,passesneartotheendofthesensor.Whenconfiguringthesystemyouneedtosupplythenumberofferrousobjectsthatwillbecountedforeachrevolution.Inadditionforspeedyoumustsupplytherollout/circumferenceofthetire.TakenoteofthesedetailssothatyoumayenterthemintothedisplayconfigurationviaPCdetailedlaterinthemanual.

Fittingproximitysensors:

Thesesensorsaretriggeredbyanumberof‘Targets’(seeSensorTargets).ItisessentialthatthesedevicesandtheircablesarepositionedasfaraspossiblefromallsourcesofintenseheatandfromtheignitionHTleadstoavoidinterference.

Sensortargets:

Proximitysensortargetscanbeanysuitablemetallicobjectwhichpasseswithinrangeofthesensortip.Ironandmildsteeltargetsarepreferredastheygivethestrongestsignaltothesensor.Aluminum,brassandcoppertargetsgiveapproximatelyonethirdofthesensingrangewhichmakessettingupthesensordifficultandmaycausethespeedsignaltobeunreliable.Magneticsensorsaresuppliedwithrareearthmagnettargetswhichmaybebondedtothevehiclecomponentinquestion.AluminummountingcollarsfittedwithmagnetsarealsoavailableforpurchasefromAutoMeterseparately.

Itisimportantthatthesensorandtargetsarerigidlymountedsotheydonotmovewithvibration.Thesensorbracketshouldhaveasuitableholeforthethreadedportionofthesensortopassthrough.Targetsshouldbeatleast10mm(5/8”)acrossandstand4mm(5/32”)proud(Fig.1).Smallertargetscanbeusedbutthesewillreducetherange.Smallaluminum,brassorcoppertargetswillgenerallynotwork.Nothingexceptthetargetsshouldcomewithin6mm(1/4”)oftheendofthesensor.Ifthesensormountingpositionistoberecessed,ahollowof24mm(15/16”)diameterandatleast4mm(5/32”)deepshouldbeallowedaroundthesensor.

Sensorfittingandadjustment:

1. ConnecttheMiniSure‐SealconnectoroftheproximitysensortothesystemviaPA1toPA4oftheSensorHarness.Turnonthepower.

2. Assemblethefirst(rear)nutontothesensor.3. Insertthesensorintothemountingbracketholeandfitthefrontnut.4. Rotatethewheelorshaftandmovethesensorslowlyforwardbyundoingtherearnutcounter‐

clockwiseuntilthebuilt‐inlight(LED)comesonforeverytarget.

Thatlightisusedtocheckthatboththemechanicalandelectricalinstallationshavebeenperformedcorrectly.ThislightshouldbeONwhenatargetisinfrontofthesensor.

5. Undotherearnuthalfaturnmore.6. Withoutrotatingthesensororrearnut,finger‐tightenthefrontnut.7. Tightentherearnutwitha13mmAFspanner.DoNOTletthesensorrotate.Donotover‐tighten;one

flatofthenutshouldbesufficient.Asmallamountofsiliconesealerwillpreventitvibratingloose.

Checksforcorrectinstallationandadjustment:

Rotatethewheelorshaftandcheckthatthebuilt‐insensorlightcomesonforeachtargetandgoesoffbetweeneachtarget.

Checkthatboththesensorandtargetsarerigidlymounted. Checkthatthefrontnutoranyfixingsdonotcoveranypartofthesensingend. CheckthegapbetweensensorandanyofthetargetsisNOTlessthan0.5mm(3/16”)sothereisno

riskofthesensorhittingthetargets.

Thesphericalbearingsateachendofthesensoraredesignedtoabsorbanybendingforcesonthesensorrodandshouldnotberestrictedinanyway.Failuretodothiswillresultinbendingforcesbeingappliedwhichwillcausethesensortofail!

Itissecuredthrougha18mm(0.7”)diameterholebytwonutswithM18x1mmthreads. Thissensormustbepositionedhorizontallyandsquaretotheaxisofthevehicle. Inordertodetectthesignalsfromthebeaconitmustbesituatedoutsidethevehicle. Itshould,ifpossible,bepositionedsothatothervehiclesthatarebeingovertaken(orareovertaking)

12MonthLimitedWarrantyAutoMeterProducts,Inc.warrantstotheconsumerthatallAutoMeterHighPerformanceproductswillbefreefromdefectsinmaterialandworkmanshipforaperiodoftwelve(12)monthsfromdateoftheoriginalpurchase.Productsthatfailwithinthis12monthwarrantyperiodwillberepairedorreplacedatAutoMeter’soptiontotheconsumer,whenitisdeterminedbyAutoMeterProducts,Inc.thattheproductfailedduetodefectsinmaterialorworkmanship.ThiswarrantyislimitedtorepairorreplacementofpartsintheAutoMeterinstruments.InnoeventshallthiswarrantyexceedtheoriginalpurchasepriceoftheAutoMeterinstrumentsnorshallAutoMeterProducts,Inc.beresponsibleforspecial,incidentalorconsequentialdamagesorcostsincurredduetothefailureofthisproduct.WarrantyclaimstoAutoMetermustbetransportationprepaidandaccompaniedwithdatedproofofpurchase.Thiswarrantyappliesonlytotheoriginalpurchaserofproductandisnon‐transferable.Allimpliedwarrantiesshallbelimitedindurationtothesaid12monthwarrantyperiod.Breakingtheinstrumentseal,improperuseorinstallation,accident,waterdamage,abuse,unauthorizedrepairsoralterationsvoidsthiswarranty.AutoMeterProducts,Inc.disclaimsanyliabilityforconsequentialdamagesduetobreachofanywrittenorimpliedwarrantyonallproductsmanufacturedbyAutoMeter.
