We received a letter from the ‘Energetic Elves’ a group of year 6 children at Aldingbourne Primary School who, as part of their PSHCE lessons, had to decide on a business they would like to run for a day, plan their activities and hopefully finish up with a nice big profit which would be donated to charity. The team unanimously agreed to hold a mini Christmas fete and were given £25 to get their business up and running. They advertised the event at school and invited teachers and schoolmates to visit Santa’s Grotto, guess the number of Smarties on a cake, buy some yummy home made cakes or purchase a box of crackers. The event was a huge success and raised a total sum of £70.83 which was donated to the Hospice. The team chose to support us as, two years ago, one of the team member’s mothers was under our care. We were very impressed with their efforts and so pleased to meet such an enthusiastic team. to the Summer edition of our newsletter. Recent months haveseen a few changes at the Hospice with our new Chair ofTrustees, Angela Wormald, being appointed in March. Out-going Chair, Anthony Wickins, spoke at his last Boardmeeting about how much the Hospice had meant to him andmy grateful thanks go to him for his hard work andcommitment during his time as Chair.

We also welcomed Avril Blakely, Head of Fundraising, tothe Hospice team. Avril has quickly settled in and become awelcome addition, and it’s an exciting time for her to join usas we start to look forward to our 25th Anniversary in 2012.

Another new addition is the Arundel Support Group.Brendan Amesbury, Medical Director, and I spoke at a recentevent there and it’s always our pleasure to speak to groups

in the community about our work and show the HospiceDVD. Doing so reminds us that the patients and families wesupport talk so passionately about what St Wilfrid's Hospicemeans to them and how the Hospice plays a very importantpart in the wider community.

In this issue you can also find out more about forthcomingevents, including the Moonlight Walk. This event has quicklybecome a really important date in our calendar and thewalk is something quite special to be a part of. Please dosupport us if you can.

We receive tremendous support from the community andwe recently ended another year in good financial health. Onbehalf of everyone at St Wilfrid's Hospice I thank all oursupporters for their ongoing generosity - it really does makea difference.

Welcome...

Last year we commissioned two Fine Art Degree students, who are in their final year at Chichester University, to create aunique piece of work for the Hospice reception area.

Charlotte Angliss and Abigail Hook, both talented artists, wanted to create an abstract design from which our patients, visitors and staff would see something different each day. From the initial design the two brightly coloured patchworkpanels, which were created using a disperse dye painted ontocard and transferred onto material using heat, took nearly ayear to complete.

We think their work is stunning and it looks as if they havealready mapped out a colourful future as Charlotte is lookingto gain more exposure in the art world whilst Abigail wouldlike to enrol on an art therapy course. We wish them well.

A Work of Art As promised in the lastedition we are pleased to tellyou a little more aboutAngela Wormald, our newChair of Trustees.

Angela has lived inChichester since 1995 whenshe moved from Essex to joinJohn Wiley & Sons Limited asHead of Human Resources(HR). Most of her working lifehas been in HR managementalthough she has spent sometime working in retail withMarks & Spencer.

Angela is married to Johnand has two daughters, onegrandson and a house inBurgundy, which they visitseveral times a year. She isalso a Trustee of the Reed-Elsevier Pension Scheme andin her spare time enjoysreading, knitting, silversmithing, enamellingand jewellery-making.

During Angela’s time atWiley she used to raisemoney for the Hospice fromcake sales, books sales andthe like - not huge amountsbut as we know every littlehelps. Angela says, “I thoughtthat if I ever became avolunteer it would be for theHospice. Little did I know.”

In January 2010 Angelabought a new sofa and was

hoping to donate the old oneto the Hospice. Whilstbrowsing the Hospicewebsite she spotted thatSt Wilfrid’s was looking forTrustees so she applied andwe were delighted to accepther application!

Angela says, “I’ve reallyenjoyed being a Trustee andconsider myself privileged tobe Chair at a time when theHospice has a strong, diverseTrustee Board and anextremely dedicated andprofessional Managementteam.”

Angela is very much lookingforward to meeting many ofour supporters and hasalready attended severalfundraising events to thankeveryone on behalf of theTrustee Board.

A huge thank you to everyonewho responded to our appealearlier in the year. Many of youwill remember that St Wilfrid’sneeded to raise an additional£15,000 to help plug the gapin providing bank staff coverfor our Hospice at Homeservice, and you certainly roseto the challenge of helping uscontinue to accept referralsby raising almost £32,000 forthe Hospice.

Donations are still coming inas we go to press and wehave received some veryencouraging feedback from

many of our supporters whotruly appreciate the range ofservices that St Wilfrid’sprovides to the localcommunity.

As Mrs Phillipa Pratt, aSt Wilfrid’s supporter, says,“I think that the work of theHospice is truly marvellousand if I can help in my ownway then I know that I amhelping others. The staff andvolunteers at St Wilfrid’s aredoing the most amazing workand I just wanted toacknowledge that with myregular gift.”

Not wanting to sit around and wait for something tohappen, our very own Famous Five - Lewis Branson, Jenny Moyler, Kate Lee, Phil Richards and Tom Guy - are inthe midst of their own exciting adventure as they have leftthe Summersdale depot and ventured into uncharteredterritory - Quarry Lane, Chichester!

Our brand new furniture shop, which is situated next toPampered Pets in Quarry Lane is open seven days a weekbetween 9.00 am – 5.00 pm Monday to Saturday and 10.00 am – 4.00 pm on Sunday. And, like our Summersdaleshop, it is selling good quality furniture, home furnishings, bric-a-brac and used, new and inexpensive best sellers.

Do pop in and have a browse. They can’t promise you ‘a glassof ginger beer or a ham roll’ but they can promise you firstclass service, value for money and maybe a few hidden gems!Hospice at Home Appeal

Five Go Off to Quarry Lane!

Without our wonderful team of over 450 volunteers wesimply wouldn’t be able to function or run the Hospice.

From working in the garden, helping on the ward, arranging flowers, pampering our patients with relaxingmassages or serving in one of our shops our volunteersprovide us with an amazing 59,124 hours of supportthroughout the year.

We are always grateful for our volunteers’ contribution andrecognise the big difference they make to the Hospice.Volunteers’ Week (1st - 7th June) is an annual nationalcampaign which provides us with the ideal opportunity tosay a great big thank you to all our volunteers, past andpresent, who help us in so many different ways. We arelooking forward to meeting you all at our annual meeting sothat we can shower you with thanks!

One such person is Ingrid Woodburn who joined as avolunteer in 1998 and, in fact, was the first therapist offeringhand and foot massage to patients on the ward. About nineyears ago Ingrid was introduced to Reiki and now givestreatments to patients, carers, staff and other volunteers. She says, “St Wilfrid’s is a great place to volunteer. I enjoybeing able to help people, see them in less pain and givingthem a sense of well being.”

And so, too, does Steve Hambleton who has been apatient care volunteer for about three years. He feels that

he is giving something back to the Hospice forthe fantastic care given to his sister, Laurain, and says, “I like being involved with thepatients and do have fun with some of them, making light hearted comments and bringing asmile to their faces. The staff are fantastic andso professional - it is very rewarding beingassociated with the Hospice.”

So a great big thank you to all our volunteers and if youknow of anyone who would like to join us please ask themto give Emma Clark, Volunteer Service Leader, a call on01243 755815.

“It’s a challenge and something we can both do together,”that’s what Day Hospice Nurse Anne-Marie Hopkins suggestedto her husband Dave when she told him of her plans for themboth to take part in a sponsored sky-dive!

This is just one of the many challenges Anne-Marie wants toachieve before she reaches the age of 60 and one that she cannow tick off her ‘to-do’ list. Although both were veryapprehensive, the weather was beautiful and their family waswith them to offer support. Anne-Marie says, “I have neverbeen so scared in my life! Our thanks must go to patients, staff, family and friends for helping us to raise £1,183 for St Wilfrid’s.”

The Sussex Festival Choir was formed in 2003 byStephen Hope following the death of his mother after a14 month stay in Hospital. Stephen wanted to ‘givesomething back’ to a care establishment and chose tosupport the Hospice movement.

At first Stephen launched a series of orchestral concertsalong the south coast but found it very difficult to attractlocal audiences. So he decided to provide a large scaleplatform for choristers to perform a large work duringthe summer term when their own choirs had finished forthe season.

The choir, which now meets with the Sinfonia da Chiesain Arundel Cathedral every July, has proved to beamazingly successful and, to date, has raised more than£36,000 for St Wilfrid’s and St Catherine’s Hospices.

The concerts attract artists such as Dame Felicity Lott,Dame Anne Murray, Sir Willard White and many othersingers and players all of whom offer their services freeof charge.
