But regardless of why the disciples could not recognize Jesus, one thing is certain: when Jesus broke the bread, his disciples recognized that it was him. We do not know if he proclaimed the bread as his body, or the wine as his blood at that supper with the disciples as he did at the Last Supper. Perhaps, when he blessed the bread and wine, he gave thanks to God for finishing the New Passover that was just accomplished. Or perhaps it was merely the style of blessing that revealed that it was Jesus—his prayer would have been very powerful and unique. Their memory of the impact that Jesus made on their lives through the meals helped them to confirm that it was truly Jesus. Regardless the possibilities, what is important is that the disciples knew that the way Jesus broke the bread was entirely unique to him, and that no one could imitate it. We, too, can be a lot like the disciples on the way to Emmaus. While Jesus is truly in our midst, we often do not recognize his presence among us. Sometimes, God has to use something that speaks uniquely to each and every one of us—he meets us where we are. However, we also must be open to hearing God speak to us. Perhaps this time of quarantine is a time for us to slow down and listen. Pray the rosary, read the Gospels, and reflect on the readings of the mass. God has given us this time of isolation to help us to reconnect to Him through prayer. May we listen to His call, and may we be like the two disciples on the way to Emmaus, recognizing His presence and making Him known to those around us. Happy Easter! The Lord is alive and is among us! Fr. Thomas Hoang, C.Ss.R. Parochial Vicar

Dear Friends, We are very blessed to be living in an age of technology. Although our live-streaming still has some kinks to work out, it has made real the possibility of us participating in the mass even if we are not in the same place. I want to give a big thanks to our staff who made this possible, and we hope that you remain patient with us while we find solutions to our technical difficulties. If you have been following our masses online, you may have heard me mention the TV series called, “The Chosen.” This series is very unique because it aims to be a multi-seasonal take on the life of Jesus and those whom he touched. It delves into many things that the Gospels do not reveal, such as how Peter's relationship with his wife was like, or how Nicodemus came to be a secret disciple of Jesus. Because of this, this series does a good job in capturing the feel of what Jewish culture must have been like at Jesus's time. One of the most interesting practices that this series depicts is that the Jews would always say a blessing before every meal: “Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for you have given us this bread!” or, “Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for you have given us this wine!” Hearing how they would bless food in this manner, I think about how mass is celebrated, when the priest offers the bread and wine to be used as instruments of the sacrifice of the mass. The mass takes many aspects from the Jewish meal and turns it into a remembrance—a sacrifice—of Jesus. In the Gospel this Sunday, we hear how Jesus appeared to two disciples on their way to Emmaus. A fascinating detail is that the disciples recognized Jesus through the breaking of the bread. It must have been a normal meal time, in which all would say the regular blessings to God for the gifts of bread and wine. And yet, because of the unique way that Jesus did this blessing, the disciples recognized him right away. Why could they not recognize Jesus when they saw his face or when he spoke to them about the law and the prophets? Why did it take the breaking of the bread to finally open their eyes to realize that it was him? Many possibilities exist. Perhaps his scars so disfigured his body that the disciples could not recognize him. The fact that those injuries still exist is proven when Jesus invites Thomas to touch his hand and sides. Another possibility is that, because of Jesus' resurrection, his body underwent a glorification, not unlike the Transfiguration on the mountain. The final possibility could be that the disciples had a form of PTSD; the image of Jesus crucified was so ingrained in their minds that, no matter how much they saw Jesus, they believed in their heart that it could not be him, since the dead do not rise.

6 APRIL 26TH, 2020 | THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

Our 25th Anniversary Silver Jubilee goal for 2020 is $3,200,000. Every parish in the Diocese shares in this goal based on its offertory income. There is a two-fold blessing in this stewardship. Once a parish has reached its goal, all funds raised above and beyond that goal are rebated to the parish, 100%, for parish projects. Thus, the entire Church is built up: your generous stewardship helps the particular Church of the Diocese of Las Vegas and also assists the parish, your spiritual family. 20/20 is the measure of perfect vision. It is our belief that with all families participating in the

Catholic Stewardship Appeal in 2020, in our Silver Jubilee for the Diocese of Las Vegas, we may both obtain to a more perfect, spiritual, vision in our own lives, and offer that gift to others, as together we are transformed into good stewards and servants of the Lord, Christ Jesus. Below is an example of the pledge card (which you can also get in the church narthex). All information for CSA is available on our website and our Diocese’s website.

We want to remind everyone know of an ongoing scam that is taking place. Many people have received emails and/or text messages from someone claiming to be

Fr. Bede. They request help by asking for money and/or gift cards.

Please know that no matter what the email address looks like or how convincing the email/text sounds...this is not Fr. Bede, Fr. Thomas or

anyone else on staff.

We care so much about our parishioners and do not want to see anyone get caught up in this.
