DESCRIPTION

Antoine Proulx is an extensive collection of tables and case pieces where balance is often achieved through asymmetry and cantilevered volumes. It is inspired by a divergent array of subjects ranging from the paintings of Francis Bacon and René Magritte to the ceramics and architectural facades of the Czech Cubists. Antoine Proulx is luxury in its most honest and contemporary form. It is furniture meant to be handed down to future generations.

WELCOME

Antoine Proulx was founded in 1992 by Marc Desplaines wholaunched the U. S. corporation of renowned Japanese fashion de-signer Yohji Yamamoto in New York City. The Antoine Proulx collection of handcrafted furniture was designed by Marc out ofhis frustration at not being able to find what he was looking for inthe market. As fate would have it, his brother Richard Desplaines was already established as a master furniture makerwith nearly 20 years experience producing one-of-a-kind piecesfor designers and architects. The two brothers cemented a design/build relationship which would land their furniture inprestigious magazines such as Interior Design, ProgressiveArchitecture, I. D., and the New York Times. The name, Antoine

Proulx, is derived from the brothers’ paternalgrandmother, Antoinette Proulx, whose fa-ther was a builder of fine homes in New Eng-land at the turn of the twentieth century.

Since 1992, Desplaines has grown theAntoine Proulx collection from its initial six-teen pieces to two hundred thirty distinctitems. With increased recognition in thehigh-end residential market, some of Marc’sfurniture for Antoine Proulx was chosen forsets in two films, How Do You Know (Colum-

bia Pictures,2011) and Autumn In New York (MGM Pictures,2000). Television credits include While You Were Out (TLC,2003) and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (Bravo, 2007). His fur-niture is sought after and owned by some of the country’s bestknown sports figures (Mike Piazza), entertainers (Ron Howard),and financial analysts (Suze Orman). His furniture for AntoineProulx may also be seen in luxury resorts worldwide including TheRitz Carlton, The Four Seasons, W Hotels, and Sheraton. The An-toine Proulx collection is represented nationwide.

O Series

This collection responds to market demands where“softer” forms and finishes balance the often angularconstraints of contemporary projects. More andmore, clients desire an overall sense of softness andsumptuousness in their private quarters after facingwhat can be a cold, hard world outside.

Pieces in the O Series were inspired by a divergentarray of subjects ranging from the house designed byEileen Gray in Cap Martin to the paintings of FrancisBacon: Study for a Nude (1951) and Study forCrouching Nude (1952).

French Series

Inspiration for this collection that launched AntoineProulx stems from the works of architect, PierreChareau, most notably his Maison de Verre in Paris. It celebrates the seamless joinery of wood and steelwhile masking the techniques used to keep the formsclean, suspended, and cantilevered.

The French Series continues the use of traditionalbuilding methods, while constantly seeking improve-ments to the old ways as well as new ways to meetthe needs of a modern society. The external hard-ware is made by hand in our own workshop.

Czech Series

Inspired by the Czech Cubist movement which tookplace in Prague roughly between 1910 and 1920,Antoine Proulx’s Czech Series is a departure from thecompany’s initial collection in that none of thesepieces incorporate cold-rolled steel into their designs.Rather, their strength is derived from the energy cre-ated by the series’ signature angles and the spaceand motion they create.

The simple surfaces and clean joints belie the difficultmanufacturing process employed: the angled shapesrequire precision-cut compound angles. The smoothfacades, which rely heavily on geometry, hide all the joinery and internal supports.

Belgium Series

Inspiration for the Belgium Series came from RenéMagritte’s 1938 oil on canvas entitled, Les Marchesde L’été, in which the sky is depicted as man-madeblocks obliquely positioned.

It exhibits a sense of motion contrasted with a senseof seeming imbalance. Some pieces give the appear-ance that the furnitures’ components twist, pivot, orturn, when actually they are fixed into their twisted po-sitions. The Belgium Series provides a conversationpiece to any room setting.

Inspiration for the Dutch Series came from the roomsettings of many of the Dutch Masters’ painters in-cluding Johannes Vermeer. Of particular importanceis the juxtaposition of simple shapes with ornate detailovertones, while maintaining a decidedly contempo-rary note.

The Race Point Series is inspired by life nearRace Point Beach in Provincetown, Massa-chusetts (Cape Cod). This collection utilizesa simple cube to explore complexitiesbrought on by the human hand, time, need, and diversity. Like Provincetown whichbegan as a simple penninsula of land creat-ing a bay in 1627, it changed from an unin-habited forrest to a place of sand dunes, anart colony, and center of cultural diversityand tolerance.
