THEME: THE GOODNESS AND MERCY OF JESUS IS LIFE-GIVING – Lent, with its disciplines of prayer, fasting and charity, is all about repentance, renewal and healing from sin. The Gospel tells of Jesus’ encounter with a woman who had a long history of brokenness and isolation. As she meets Jesus and experiences his life changing mercy, so, too, can we receive new life and living water from the Word and sacrament in which we encounter Christ.
LITURGY OF THE WORD – In their fear and need, the Israelites grumble against Moses and the Lord. God responds by meeting those needs with water flowing from the rock. Saint Paul writes to the Romans that we have been justified by faith through Jesus – His death gives us life. In the Gospel, Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at the well and tells her He is the Messiah.

WELCOME FR. MURPHY! This weekend we welcome Father Richard Murphy as our new Administrator. Father Murphy has been the longtime Pastor and then Administrator of St. Mary’s, as well as the President of Ursuline High School. He has helped here at St. Stephen many times over the years and we look forward to a wonderful relationship. May God bless him as he assumes his new role here at St. Stephen.
UPDATE ON FATHER KORDA – We have received word that Fr. Korda came through his abdominal surgery Wednesday with the expected amount of pain but is doing okay. Please keep him in your prayers as he recovers. If you would like to send him a get-well card, his address is 930 Pearson Circle, Unit 1, Boardman, OH 44512. PLEASE, NO VISITORS!We will keep you updated on his progress. Several people wrongly assumed he was having brain surgery because of his remark about getting a haircut!
CORONAVIRUS/FLU CONCERNS – In response to concerns about the Coronavirus and flu, Bishop Murry is instructing that the following prudent steps and liturgical adaptations be implemented. These are temporary measures that will be reviewed before Holy Week:1. If you are sick, do not come to Mass. Mass can be watched on
television until you are restored to health.2. Cover your mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or
cough/sneeze into your elbow.3. Use hand sanitizer if you cough or sneeze at any time.4. Exchange the sign of peace by simply bowing to those around
you and saying “Peace be with you,” without shaking hands.5. All ministers of Holy Communion must use hand sanitizer before
distributing Holy Communion.6. The distribution of the Precious Blood from the cup is temporarily
suspended with the exception of those who must receive the cup due to severe cases of celiac disease.
7. Consider receiving Holy Communion in the hand. For those still desiring to receive on the tongue, make every effort not to come in contact with the minister’s hand or fingers.
8. Intinction (the practice of dipping the host into the wine) is not to be utilized as a means of distributing Holy Communion.
9. Holy Water fonts are to be drained. Both the Coronavirus and flu are serious health hazards. Everyone has the responsibility to take common sense steps to prevent the spread of these diseases. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 15, 2020
STEWARDSHIP – 3rd Sunday of Lent“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.” JOHN 4:13Jesus reminds us that material things, even something as basic as water, can never satisfy us for long. When we build our lives around material possessions, we always want more. True Joy and Peace only comes when we follow Jesus, when we become more “God-centered” and less “self-centered.”
ATTN: LAY MINISTERS AND SACRISTANS – If you have any requests for the next ministry schedule, that will run from APRIL 4 thru JUNE 28, please call the rectory at 330-652-4396 or email [email protected] by March 22nd. We are also asking those persons who had been previously serving at 4:30 Mass if their schedule will allow them to continue as ministers at the new 9:00 a.m. Mass time. Please let us know either way, also by March 22. Thank you for your help!
LUCK OF THE IRISH 2020 – See next week’s bulletin for a full report on our 2020 Luck of the Irish! Thanks for all who helped in any way!
RECONCILIATION OPPORTUNITIES – • Father Murphy will be hearing Confessions each Sunday
morning beginning at 8:30 a.m. here at St. Stephen.• St. Thomas the Apostle in Vienna will host a Communal
Penance Service Sunday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m. with several priests available.
• There will be a Communal Penance Service on March 24 at St. Rose in Girard at 7:00 p.m. for St. Stephen, St. Mary, St. Rose, Mt. Carmel and Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
THE SEASON OF LENT – As we continue our journey through the penitential season of Lent, just a reminder of the regulations for abstinence. All Catholics age 14 and older are to abstain from meat on all the Fridays of Lent. Catholics
age 18-59 are asked to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (only one full meal, nothing between meals). We will pray the Stations of the Cross each Friday during Lent at 3:00 p.m. here at St. Stephen and at 5:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s. During this season of Lent our parish will participate in Catholic Relief Services Operation Rice Bowl. Operation Rice Bowl invites us to: Pray together. Fast together with those who are hungry. Learn about the joys and challenges in the lives of our brothers and sisters around the world. Give sacrificial contributions to support those in need. Be sure to take a Rice Bowl to enhance your Lenten observations at home.
2020 ANNUAL BISHOP’S APPEAL – Our parish goal of 100% participation is a goal we are working hard to attain. There are three ways in which you can participate: PRAY for the success
of the Annual Bishop’s Appeal; DONATE to the Appeal; submit a completed response card as all responses will count towards our parish participation goal; VOLUNTEER your time and talents to any of the ministries of the Church. Please submit a completed response card or pew envelope as all responses count towards our parish participation goal. Thank you in advance for your response.
CEMETERY CLEANUP – The caretaker at St. Stephen Cemetery asks that all Christmas decorations be removed by March 29. Any remaining will be discarded.
A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE: Third Sunday of Lent – by Bud OzarOur children are like the Samaritan woman in today’s Gospel. They need more than material things. They need the “living water” only the adults can give. It will teach them how to make decisions, take responsibility, respect themselves and others and live their commitments. With this “living water” they will “never thirst.”
