GOSPEL SUMMARY Luke, 19:1-10

“He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.” Are there any like Zacchaeus among us? Can any of us say “I shall give HALF of my posses-sions to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone I will repay them four times over.” There are some. But we live in a world in which “grabbing the brass ring” has, for many, turned into grabbing for all the money we can get, regardless of the means we use or harm we do to others. Yet there are people who “Do not do to others what you do not want others to do to you” [Rabbi Hillel]; who “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” [Jesus]. There are people who take responsibility for themselves and for others dependent on them; who share with people in need. Many people in the world have very little; some lack the basic necessities of life. They understand the need to share. St. Theresa of Calcutta tells of giving a cup of rice to the mother of a desperately poor family in the slums of India. The woman got a container, divide the rice in two and sent half to the family next to her. When asked why she did that she said, “They are hungry too.” Are we aware of the hungry among us? Do we share what we have with them?

CATECHISM QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Next week’s Gospel is from Luke 20: 27—38 Question: What are angels? (CCC 330) A) Spirits of people who have died B) Unborn children C) Purely spiritual creatures with intel-

ligence and will D) The little doll on top of the Christ-

mas tree

Workshop on Planning your Funeral Wake and Mass: Father often hears a request for time to

help prepare the Funeral Wake/Visitation and Mass. Today, Sunday November 3 at 4:00 p.m. here at St. Stephen Parish Hall there will be a workshop cov-ering the Catholic understanding of Death and Burial, the importance of a Wake/Visitation and Funeral Mass and how to plan for these. Handouts and materi-als will be distributed. There is no cost involved. Hope to see you at the workshop.

St. Stephens Campaign for BED SHEETS FOR VETS

has been temporarily suspended.

With donation deadline approaching, we were falling far short of our goal. PLUS, holiday purchases for Angel Tree, Holiday Baskets for Needy, and more

were stretching pocketbooks too thin this season. We are securely storing current donations and will resume the campaign in the Spring. For more information: Contact Kathleen Johnson (270) 564-5821.

AMS Collection: The weekend of

November 10 our parish will take up the Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). Estab-lished by Saint John Paul II in 1985, the AMS is the only U.S. diocese responsible for providing pastoral care to men and women serving in the U.S. Armed Forc-es, enrolled at a U.S. Military Academy, being treated as a patient at any of the 153 U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, or working for the fed-eral government beyond U.S. borders—including those from our own parish and diocese. Including families, AMS priests and deacons were approximately 1.8 mil-lion Catholics who hail from 50 states and U.S. territories. While the salaries and retirement of Catholic military chap-lains are paid for by the U.S. Govern-ment, the AMS does not receive any funding from the government or military for program and administrative costs. To learn more about the AMS, go to www.milarch.org/nationalcollection. Please give generously.
