Dear Friends,

Today is Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord. Each year the Church celebrates this holiest of weeks with reverence and awe. We stand before the Lord Jesus, who suffered and died to save us from our sins. We should be overwhelmed by this great act of love that brings new life to all who call out to God in faith. As we begin this Holy Week, let us pledge our prayerful support for each other, for the journey that is ahead of us involves embracing the cross of Christ in a deeper way. As we journey this week, let us proclaim in word and deed, the final words of the Passion proclamation today: “Truly this was the Son of God.”

On the bulletin cover you can see the many opportunities for prayer and devotion this week. Please consider it as an invitation to full participation in the wonderful expression of Jesus’ love for us. Please share with your family and friends this invitation to enter into the great mystery of our salvation.

Please hold closely in prayer this week our catechumen, Bunny and our candidates, Devon and Mike, as they make final preparations for Baptism and/or Reception into Full Communion in the Catholic Church. Bunny will be baptized at the Easter Vigil and Devon and Mike will be received into the Church on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 23rd at the 11:00 AM Mass. We look forward to welcoming our newest members to the Church and our parish family.

May Saint Robert Bellarmine intercede to make this week truly holy for every member of our parish family!

With prayers,

Palm Sunday P

MUSIC DURING HOLY WEEK AND EASTER: There are many reasons to attend Mass during Holy Week and Easter. Holy Week is a very special time when we reflect very intently on the Paschal Mystery through prayers, readings, the Eucharist, and through music. The passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus are the reasons why we profess the faith we believe in. We, the Choir of Saint Robert Bellarmine Parish, invite you to join us each day in the many songs during Holy Week to journey with Him through Jerusalem, the Last Supper, Calvary, and beyond the grave. To stress the importance of Holy Week, the Liturgy is enhanced in every way. Professional musicians are hired to help enhance the beautiful sacred music. A professional violinist will be accompanying the choir on Holy Thursday and trumpets at the Easter Vigil and the 11:30 am Mass on Easter Sunday. From the Resurrection in part II of Handel’s Messiah, the choir will sing the “Hallelujah Chorus” on Easter Sunday at the 11:30 am Mass. Come journey with us as we sing hymns to our Lord that we hear only once a year such as Were You

There, O Sacred Head Surrounded, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, Behold the Wood of the Cross, Jesus Remember Me, In Remembrance of Me, Jesus Christ Is Risen Today, and many others. Come join in the music, the prayers, the mystery of Holy Week, and the triumph of Easter for it happens only once a year!

DIVINE MERCY NOVENA - The Divine Mercy Chaplet is recited each Monday, at 3:00 PM, during the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. It was given to us by Our Lord through St. Maria Faustina. Many graces are attached to its recitation. If you are not familiar with the prayers, there are pamphlets located in the Narthex explaining the simple prayer order using rosary beads. The chaplet can be recited anytime, but the Lord specifically asked that it be recited as a novena, especially on the nine days starting on Good Friday and ending on the Saturday before the Feast of Mercy (the 2nd Sunday of Easter). Jesus promised, “By this Novena (of Chaplets) I will grant every possible grace to souls”. Confession and the reception of the Eucharist are a prerequisite.

PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD

Today, and through Holy Week, we tell THE story of grace and blessing of

Jesus’ saving act of love—his passion, death and Resurrection. How do we

respond? In Paul’s Letter to the Philippians we are challenged: “Every knee

should bend, … and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.”

When we encounter challenging situations in our life do we imagine that God

has abandoned us, or do we use those moments to proclaim God’s abiding

love?

In this most Holy Week of our year, let us resolve to find more ways to give

witness to the Good news that God is with us.

THE CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL FOR 2017 “GIVING HOPE TO ALL”. St. Gabriel’s System (SGS) is committed to helping youth entrusted to its care by the Philadelphia Family Court to overcome adversities and achieve a positive future for their lives. Students enroll in career and technical training to

earn industry recognized certification in building maintenance, culinary arts, landscaping/horticulture and more. Out of School Time (OST) programs are playing an increasingly important role in the educational landscape. Currently CSS has OST contracts for 15 programs at 12 sites, mostly in low or moderate income neighborhoods. They utilize existing school facilities and operate for several hours after school closes. In total there are 682 children enrolled in OST programs conducted through CSS. The OST programs do it all – they have math, science and reading programs while also providing physical fitness instruction. Students also participate in art, music, a variety of sports, and most recently, STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) education. Homework tutoring is also available. Your contributions to the 2017 CCA will benefit SGS and OST programs and so much more.

Currently we are at 48% of our $71,901 goal with $34,790 from 231 contributors. With your donation you’ll be giving much

more than money, you will be GIVING HOPE TO ALL those children participating

in the SGS and OST programs. Should you have any questions please contact the

Appeal office at 215.587.3651 or visit www.CatholicCharitiesAppeal.org
