Dear Parish Family,

It is a duty for every Christian to watch out for each one of God’s people in the way God

spelled out to Ezekiel. But this can look like a dreadful idea. Could it really be the case that a

Christian is supposed to be a kind of busybody, continually nagging other people about their sins? Here we need to

remember that there is more than one way to communicate with others. If you are concentrated in love and service to the

Lord, your life will tell a story to everyone who crosses your path. When Francis of Assisi was asked about this very passage

in today’s first reading, he said, “If that passage is supposed to be understood in a universal sense, then I understand it to

mean that a servant of God should be burning with life and holiness so brightly that by the light of his example and the

tongue of his conduct, he will rebuke all the wicked.” In another place, the Gospel instructs us to pay more attention to the

beam in one’s own eye than to the speck of dust in somebody else’s (Matthew 7:5). Your life can bear witness to the

goodness of the Lord and the holiness of his commandments. You don’t have to use words to do so. A Christian can and

should concentrate on the beam in his own eye, just as the Gospel instructs. When a Christian truly does so, then the duty

to witness to others as God’s commands Ezekiel will be authentically and beautifully fulfilled.

Come One! Come All!

Come join the St. Rita’s Guild on their new meeting day and time – now the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 5:30pm in the church office.

Questions often asked about the Guild

1) Isn’t the Guild just for the women of the parish? The

answer is no. The Guild is a group of energetic men and

women who want to make a difference in our Catholic

community. Though membership is for those over the age of

18 years, many of our families become involved and our

children become engaged in our efforts, too.

2) What is the cost to be a member of the Guild? There is no

cost to be a Guild member. All the Guild asks is for is a

small amount your time throughout the year to help at Guild

sponsored events.

Just what does the Guild do? We sponsor parish-wide

programs and events designed to involve parishioners in the

many areas of internal ministry and social gatherings.

Been to a Coffee Sunday? That is sponsored by the Guild.

Enjoyed a delicious Italian Dinner? That is sponsored by the

Guild.

Browsed and purchased items at the Gift Shop? That is

managed and run by the Guild.

Been to a Bereavement Luncheon at St. Rita’s? Most

Bereavement Luncheons at St. Rita’s are hosted by the

Guild.

These are just a few of the activities the Guild does here at St. Rita’s. But we can’t do it without YOU. Please stop by this Wednesday September 13 at 5:30pm and see how you can become involved with the St. Rita’s Guild.

If you know of someone who needs

communion brought to their home,

please contact the parish office.

Our Lady of Sorrows Feast Day September 15

Our Lady of Sorrows feast day recalls

not only the sufferings Mary experienced

in her life, but also the way she consoles

others in the midst of theirs. Mary, a

woman who praised God for the blessing

bestowed upon her, was not defeated by

the sorrow that pierced her heart. She

gave herself over to God’s grace,

allowing herself to be transformed in the

process. Her pierced and wounded heart

is a sign of blessing and hope. Thus we

turn to her in our own need, asking for

her prayers on our behalf.

Mary’s response to our cries of pain ... is a reminder that

God’s merciful blessing is given to all of us, particularly in times of

our greatest need. It is also a call to open our hearts to others,

to be people who know sorrow and allow it to make us more

generous and caring. What we have to offer may seem a pittance

given the vast sum of human misery across the globe.

The life and witness of this humble woman, however, should

remind us that no act of charity is insignificant and that each

extension of kindness is one more ripple in the vast expanse of

love that consoles us all.

RCL Benziger Conversation Starters

by Nancy Bird, Director at RCL Benziger

So what would those conversations sound like? To start,

be sure that everyone understands the rules, and there

are only three:

Everyone must take a turn responding to the question or

completing the statement, children and adults alike.

When someone is speaking, everyone else listens, and no one

may disagree. Respect everyone’s right to express and share

his or her own thoughts.

If the speaker says something nice about you, don’t feel

embarrassed or think you need to disagree; simply appreciate

it and say thank you.

Here are some conversation starters about Faith:

The best thing about being a member of this family is _____.

My favorite family story is _____.

What is your favorite family holiday and why?

What is your favorite family activity to do with a family

relative and why?

The most fun we have ever had as a family was the time when

_____.

Laying Down the Law

As institutions age, their laws multiply. As countries grow older,

the laws of nation, state, and city grow ever more complex. It is hard

to know them all. We hire lawyers to study laws for us.

The laws of the church are also complex. They are collected in the

code of canon law, which is also hard to absorb. We need church

lawyers to help us out. New laws are written all the time. Old ones

are adjusted. The code grows slowly outdated as new legislation

forms. Everyone wants to be a good citizen and a good Catholic, but it

is hard sometimes to know what the law is.

In Jesus’ day, the law was also complex. At times it appeared that

laws conflicted, as when he healed on a Sabbath. Laws of charity

conflicted with laws governing sacred time.

When they asked Jesus for the greatest law, he simplified the

complex structure of laws and reduced them to two: Love God. Love

your neighbor.

St. Paul told the Romans, “The one who loves another has fulfilled

the law.” He made it very simple.

God is the ultimate judge over how we observe the laws of church

and state. God made the rules as simple as possible. When the laws of

our institutions seem complex, we can always please God by following

the most basic law of all: love.
