Fourth Sunday of Lent March 22, 2020
LAETARE SUNDAY This Sunday, the Fourth Sunday of Lent, is Laetare Sunday. The La n word "laetare" means "rejoice". As we move through Lent and come closer to Easter, the Church invites us to be joyful on this Sunday. It may seem odd to speak of being joyful at such an unse ling me as we are going through locally, na onally and globally.
Yet we are mindful today of St. Paul's word's 2000 years ago: "Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice!...Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and pe on, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of
God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:4)
READINGS FOR THIS WEEK We are a emp ng to broadcast Mass from St. Raphael church for this Sunday. Check our parish website (www.straphaelcatholic.org) and our Facebook page. For those who would like to follow the scripture readings for the Fourth Sunday of Lent, see: 1 Samuel 16:1-13; Ephesians 5:8-14 and John 9:1-38.
THE ANNUNCIATION March 25 is the Solemnity of the Annuncia on of our Lord. Nine months before Christmas the Church celebrates the Incarna on of the Lord Jesus, recalling that the Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary a er she said "yes" to God's plan for her to be the mother of the Lord (Luke, Chapter 1:26-38). We learn from Mary that God can do infinitely more with us when we say "yes" to God's plan than if we say "no". We also marvel that "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us." As we reflect with wonder on the mystery of God becoming a human being in Jesus of Nazareth, let us consider new ways we can promote the sanc ty of each and every human life.
BISHOP BARTOSIC POSTPONED Bishop Mark Bartosic was scheduled to speak at St. Raphael on Wednesday, March 25. Given the precau ons now in place for everyone's health and safety, we will reschedule Bishop Bartosic's talk at a later date.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS The church will be open on Fridays of Lent from 8:00am un l 9:30am and again from 6:30pm un l 7:30pm for those who wish to pray or make the Sta ons of the Cross. Booklets with the medita ons for the Sta ons of the Cross will be available on a table; if you take a booklet, please keep it. New booklets will be placed on a table each Friday. Remember we cannot make the Sta ons of the Cross as a group, so people are encouraged to provide proper space between each other if you are moving from sta on to sta on. I encourage you to pray for the sick and their families as you make the Way of the Cross.
CONFESSION IS GOOD FOR THE SOUL St. Raphael will s ll have confession available during Lent. There are new guidelines in place for health reasons. The penitent is asked to remain standing on the other side of the screen when speaking with the priest. I would ask that all people going to confession use the screen rather than speak face-to-face. Booklets that help you prepare for the sacrament are available in the church; if you pick up that booklet, please keep it for future use. Confession is scheduled for Saturdays at 3:00pm on March 28 and April 4. Addi onal mes are schedule for the end of Lent. While wai ng to see the priest please remain six feet distant from other people wai ng for confession. Thank you.
In our Lord,
Fr. Mike McGovern [email protected]

GIVE GOD PERMISSION Mother Teresa of Calcu a had a wonderful way of saying very important things using very few words. A Catholic bishop once asked Mother Teresa how he could improve his spiritual life; Mother replied: "Give God permission." Those three words convey an important spiritual truth: that we have to give God permission to direct us and our en re lives according to His holy will. Many of us ask God for signs: signs that will reassure us about the decisions we are making, or what is the best direc on for our lives. We seek signs that reassure us that God genuinely cares about us and that we are not alone. Yet, how many of the saints like Mother Teresa remind us that Chris an faith is not so much about asking God for signs, but giving God permission to make me into a sign; that my very life becomes a tes mony to the presence, love and ac on of God at work in the world. As we make the journey of Lent this year, I encourage each of us to give God permission to be God of our lives and transform us into living signs of His presence and love.
