June 2015The ‘So What?’ of Callings and Pilgrimages

Chaim Potok, the intensely religious Jewish novelist, in a lecture at Johns Hopkins University addressed what some theologians call the “so what?” of religious

pilgrimage: that is, God acts on our behalf and now the ball is in our court. Potok recounted a conversation with his mother as he prepared for college. “Chaim,” his mother exclaimed, “I know you want to be a writer, but I have

a better idea. Why don’t you be a brain surgeon. You’ll keep a lot of people from dying and you’ll make a lot of money.” “Mama,” Chaim retorted, “I don’t want to keep people from dying; I want to show them how to live.”

During this season of transitions, graduations, and elections, when people receive diplomas, trot up center aisles, consider episcopal elections, recite vows, and make promises; there are advisors, mentors, strategists, counselors – even moms and dads -- all urging us to make a difference, to help people, to be successful. Within the variegated smorgasbord of voices and best wishes, I ask, can we hear the central question: What does it mean to represent Christ and to be good stewards of our lives?

Several weeks ago one parishioner wanted to know my opinion on the election of a bishop for the Diocese of Dallas (The Rev. Canon George Sumner was elected on Saturday, May 16). “I would love to know the opinion of an older rector about the election,” she said. “For whom should we vote?”

Convention Chooses The Rev. Canon George Sumner Bishop-Elect

The Rev. Canon George Sumner was chosen bishop-elect of the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas during a Special Electing Convention Saturday, May 16, held at the Episcopal School of Dallas. He was elected on the fourth ballot of the convention.

Sumner, age 60, is currently the Principal of Wycliffe College in Toronto, Canada, and was one of four nominees on the ballot. “I am humbled and grateful to God for my election,” Sumner said. “It will be a great privilege to share in the ministry Christ has given us all together in the Diocese of Dallas.”

Clergy Transitions

Oliver Butler, Hunter Ruffin, Michael Harmuth To Assume New Roles at Saint Michael

The Rev. Oliver Butler to Lead Youth and Young Adult Ministries

The Rev. Oliver Butler has accepted Rector Bob Dannals’ call to help strengthen the church’s ministries to teens and young adults through the next school year. Beginning on June 8, as Associate for Youth and Young Adults, he will be working with Carolina Armstrong, the youth, and their families to renew and grow our programs.

“This reorganization, which follows the recommendations of our consultants, Ministry Architects, will provide a connection between our youth and the church, drawing each deeper into the life of our common community,” said Vicar Bill Murray. “With his history of chaplaincy at the Episcopal School of Dallas, Oliver already knows many of the families and is excited to learn more about the many schools and programs that are a part of our church family,”

In making the announcement, Dannals also said, “Oliver and his wife, Elizabeth, look forward to developing fellowship groups with young adults, especially with the ‘foodies’ of our congregation.”

The Rev. Hunter Ruffin Assuming Leadership of Mission & Outreach

Beginning June 8, The Rev. Hunter Ruffin will assume his position as Associate for Mission and Outreach. He graduated with distinction May 12 from the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest in Austin. Ruffin has already started making contacts with lay ministry leaders in that area. Although his first Sunday at Saint Michael will be June 14, we will have his “official welcome reception” at our Independence Day celebration – with special music – on June 28.

The Rev. Michael Harmuth Retires from ESD --- NOT Saint Michael

At the end of the school year, The Rev. Michael Harmuth retires from a storied and successful career as Chaplain of the Lower School at Episcopal School of Dallas. However, he is NOT retiring from Saint Michael and All Angels. Father Harmuth will continue his ministry with us at least three Sundays a month for the foreseeable future. Harmuth and his wife, Marianne, will travel most of July as they celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

after saying goodbye at Saint Michael (September

27), we’ll be moving to Manhattan.”

Clergy Transitions

Sumner’s election must also be approved by a majority of consents from the bishops and standing committees of the Episcopal Church’s dioceses. If he receives the majority of consents, he will be consecrated as the 7th Bishop of the Diocese of Dallas on November 14.

Bishop Suffragan Paul Lambert applauded the election saying he is happily anticipating a renewed excitement and energy that a new bishop will bring to the diocese. “I look forward to working with Bishop-elect Sumner as we move into our next period of transition, the consent process,” Lambert said. “The future of the diocese looks bright and is in good hands.”

Ordained as an Episcopal priest in western Massachusetts in 1981, Sumner has served in a variety of capacities: youth minister, missionary teacher in east Africa, curate in an inner–city Anglo-Catholic parish, vicar on a native-American reservation in New Mexico and Arizona, and Rector. He has written a book about priestly calling and a commentary on Daniel. Sumner served on the Episcopal Church’s committee on the theology of marriage (2008-2010).

The Rev. Sumner and his wife, Stephanie, a psychotherapist, have two children a daughter (26) and a son (18). He received a B.A. from Harvard College, a Master of Divinity from Yale Divinity School, and a Ph.D. in Theology from Yale University.

The Rev. Dr. Hiltrude Nusser-Telfer to Serve Senior Living Homes

The Reverend Dr. Hiltrude Nusser-Telfer will be with Saint Michael this summer as Retirement Home Communion Chaplain, offering the monthly service at The Edgemere. She will also serve in the church during Sunday services on occasion.

A native of Germany, The Rev. Dr. Nusser-Telfer earned a BA and Master of Divinity in Religious Studies in

Belgium. In the United States she continued her studies and became a board certified chaplain, working at the Promedica Flower Hospital in Toledo for 17 years. She was ordained to the priesthood in 2002 and received a Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral Care from the Graduate Theological Foundation in South Bend, Indiana in 2010. Her doctoral dissertation, Outcomes of Faith During Hospitalization, A Case Study Method, has been published and is used as a teaching tool.

She moved to Texas two years ago to be closer to one of her three sons and his family, and has been licensed by Bishop Lambert to officiate in the Diocese of Dallas.

Women of Saint Michael Celebrate Stellar Year

More than 280 ladies gathered at the Women of Saint Michael Spring Luncheon Tuesday, May 12 to celebrate one of the group’s most successful years. The Women presented

checks to area charities, honored their past presidents, received reports on the Parish Party and the new home of the St. Michael’s Woman’s Exchange in Highland Park Village, and were inspired by keynote speaker, Dr. Sheron

Patterson.

The group’s president, Whitney Grogan, in turning over leadership to next year’s president Margaret Cervin told the ladies, “You have made a difference in the past, you are still making a difference today. I charge you to continue to be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Women of Saint Michael Donate One-Half Million Dollars to Charities

The Gifts Committee chair, Jennifer Alexander, announced that the Women of Saint Michael was donating $500,000 to charities that focused on alleviating poverty in Dallas County and Episcopal-related organizations locally, nationally, and around the world.

She said the committee received 97 applications requesting more than $1-million. After extensive research, the group made grants to 68 beneficiaries.

Jubilee Park To Get Walking Trail Funded by Women of Saint Michael

The Women donated $25,000 to Jubilee Park to build a paved walking path around the perimeter of the area. The Jubilee neighborhood has been identified by local and federal agencies as an area of “concern” for childhood obesity and Juvenile Diabetes.

In receiving the gift, Jubilee Park Executive Director Ben Leal said, “This walking path will benefit the health and well-being of every Jubilee resident.” Women of Saint Michael President Whitney Grogan commented, “This is an identifiable measure of the Women of Saint Michael’s commitment to the issue of poverty, and a lasting tribute to the hundreds of parishioners who gave their time, talent, and treasure to birth Jubilee almost twenty years ago.”President Whitney Grogan introducing in-coming President

Parish Party Reaches New Heights

February’s bi-annual Parish Party hit new heights in attendance and money raised. Party chair Squeaky Connolly told the Women that the party raised $183,487 and nearly 600 parishioners and friends attended. All of the funds will go to future outreach programs.

The Rector to Initiate Opening Week

Rector Search and Transition

Rector Search and Transition Committee In Place – Parishioner Engagement SoughtA report from Chairs Diana Newton and Van Sheets

Rectors are not “hired;” they are “called.” The term is loaded with meaning about the nature of a church’s transition. The essence of the search for a new Rector is to invite prospective Rectors into mutual discernment with us, and for them and us to listen to God’s call to us regarding the future.

The Vestry appointed the Rector Search and Transition Committee on May 13. You can get acquainted with them in this issue of the Archangel or on the website www.saintmichael.org. The committee met for the first time for a Eucharist led by Fr. Michael Harmuth. In his homily he said, “God already knows who would be a great fit as our next Rector – you just have to find him or her.” We joked later that this felt comforting and daunting at the same time.

Pray for the Transition

The Saint Michael and All Angels Prayer Ministry has established a special place in the Bishop Moore Chapel where all parishioners are invited to pray for the transition. The space has a candle stand and a book where people can leave their names, their own prayers, thoughts and messages. The Prayer Ministry team and other parishioners have prayed every day since the transition process began, and we hope that every parishioner will join in these prayers, thanking God for our life together and asking for wisdom and peace through our transition.

Help Find our Next Rector

Seeking God’s will for our transition requires being alert to potential candidates, and prospective Rectors already have been suggested to the committee by parishioners and others. Please give any ideas to a member of the committee or simply email Rector.Search@SaintMichael.org, and it will be forwarded to us automatically.

Listening to God means being open to surprise. Our next Rector will be gifted in many ways, but may not necessarily match the profile any of us might imagine today. At this stage in the process all of us should be looking to “rule in” prospects whose strengths and potential could make one of them a great Rector for us. Later in the process will be the time to narrow the list.

Participate in the Transition

The Rector Search and Transition Committee intends to host numerous parish “Conversations” about the Rector transition, to envision the future of Saint Michael and All Angels, to discuss the role of our next Rector, and to engage each of us in the transition and our future together.

The first parish-wide “Conversations” were held in May, and two more are scheduled at 9:00 a.m. on June 7 and 11:15 a.m. on June 28, both times in the Coke Activities Room. We will conduct a parish survey later this summer, which we expect will be informative for “Conversations” in the fall.

Additionally a stripe in the upper right of each page on the website provides access to transition information and updates.

Finally, all of us can support and show our appreciation to our clergy and staff through the transition. We are grateful for Bob Dannals’ leadership for the past eight years, and that our parish is healthy and well positioned for the future. We appreciate our associate clergy, who are preparing to shoulder heavier pastoral and other roles in the coming months, and our lay staff, who make possible the more than 100 distinctive ministries of Saint Michael and All Angels. Thanks be to God.

Rector Search Committee

Allison Bovard Allison grew up in the Episcopal Church in Lexington, Massachusetts and has been an active parishioner at Saint Michael since the late 1990s when she and her husband, Chris, moved to Dallas. She has taught

in the church’s catechesis program while her three sons went through the program. Allison has been a longtime participant in Saint Michael’s Extended Care Cooking ministry, has been a Vacation Bible School volunteer, and this past year has served on the Women of Saint Michael Board. Outside of the church, Allison has worked in advancement for universities and hospitals in Boston, Philadelphia, and Dallas and has been an active volunteer at her children’s schools. She and Chris have three sons, ages 18, 14 and 10.

Joseph Cahoon Joseph grew up as an active Presbyterian in Midland. He and his wife, Christie, were confirmed in Austin in their 20’s and have been active parishioners at Saint Michael and All Angels since moving to Dallas in 2005. With three

children now ages 11, 10, and 8, they are deeply involved in the church’s programs for young families, the Joy Mass, and now Celebration Mass. Through Christie, he has been a strong advocate and participant in the Saint Michael’s Children and Family Ministry. Joseph has served as a member of the Building Committee and has participated in several men’s Bible study groups. Outside the church, Joseph is Director of the Folsom Institute for Real Estate in the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University, where he also lectures in real estate finance.

Margaret Cervin While growing up at Highland Park Presbyterian, Margaret’s first exposure to Saint Michael and All Angels was to volunteer at the St. Michael’s Woman’s Exchange as a middle school student. She has continued her involvement

serving in many ministries and currently is president of the Women of Saint Michael. Outside the church, Margaret is on the Forest Heights Neighborhood Development

Corporation Board in South Dallas, and remains active in the Highland Park school district. Professionally she earned degrees in law and French and worked in energy efficiency and international affairs at the U.S. Department of Energy. Most recently she leveraged her two degrees in settling her uncle’s estate in France.

Richard D’Antoni Richard descends from a long line of ministers and missionaries and grew up Baptist in Oklahoma. He joined the Episcopal Church after marrying his wife, Maria, while in graduate school in New Orleans. The D’Antoni’s lived

in Houston for 18 years where Richard served in many capacities at St. John the Divine, including Junior Warden and Chairman of the Outreach and Long Range Planning committees. After a stint in Boston, Richard and Maria moved to Dallas and Saint Michael and All Angels in 1996. Richard has served on our church’s Finance and Evangelism committees, participates in Cursillo, the Prayer Ministry, and is the Mission and Outreach Champion for the Amistad (Bolivia) Mission. He was elected to the Executive Council of the Diocese of Dallas, and serves on the Diocesan Finance Committee, as Secretary to Convention, and on the Latino Ministries Steering Committee. Professionally, Richard is CEO of a healthcare executive search firm.

Lee Hobson Lee has a long Virginia-based Episcopalian heritage stretching to his great grandfather who was a Rector in Richmond, his grandparents who were church founders and his parents who were wardens in Alexandria. He

continues the legacy as a Trustee of Virginia Theological Seminary. Lee, his wife Ann, and their three teenage children have been members of Saint Michael since moving to Dallas in 1995. They have taught Sunday School, been members of the Pathway to Ministry Committee, and served as leaders of the Disciples Confirmation class. Outside of church, Lee works in the investment management field and serves on several community boards, including the Dallas Museum of Art, Children’s Medical Center, and the University of Texas Investment Management Company.

Rector Search Committee

Ben LealBen grew up Roman Catholic in San Antonio, and was introduced to Saint Michael and All Angels through Jubilee Park, where, for the past five years he has served as its Chief Executive Officer. He felt drawn to be a part of this church

after working with Saint Michael parishioners at Jubilee, which he says have been “life changing.” Ben is an acolyte, participates in Mission and Outreach in addition to Jubilee Park, and is a part of All Our Children, an organization that promotes, supports, and strengthens partnerships between Episcopal congregations and under-resourced urban areas. Ben has worked in the non-profit field for 13 years, after beginning his career working in the Governor’s office and the Texas House of Representatives, in Austin, where he met his long-time partner, Cesar.

Diana Newton, Co-chair Diana grew up Episcopalian in the Philadelphia suburbs, and became a member of Saint Michael and All Angels when she moved to Dallas in 2000. She has worked extensively at the church having served on the Vestry, as

Senior Warden, an eight-year member of the Stewardship Committee (which she and her husband, Geoff, chaired in 2009), the Giving Council, and the Campus Planning Committee. Diana has taught Catechesis, Sunday School, and the Disciples Confirmation class. Outside of the church, Diana is a professor in the Political Science Department at SMU, a senior fellow in the Tower Center for Political Studies, and director of the Tower Scholars Program. She and Geoff have four children, ages 25, 21, 11 and 8.

Christine Paddock Christine grew up an Episcopalian in Lubbock and began attending Saint Michael and All Angels when she moved to Dallas in 1998 following her graduation from Tulane. She and her husband, Warren, participated

in the New Married class at Saint Michael. Christine has been extremely active in the Early Childhood Ministry Committee, serving as it Chair in 2013. She has chaired

Barnyard Bash, been auction co-chair for the preschool’s “Chairish Our Children” party, volunteered in Vacation Bible School, and worked on the auction for the Women of Saint Michael Parish Party. She and Warren served on last year’s Stewardship Committee. Outside the church, Christine has worked in advertising, marketing, and development for non-profit organizations, and keeps up with her three children, ages 8, 4 and 3.

Bob PennBob was confirmed in his 20’s in Bogota, Columbia. He and his wife, Katherine, have been members of Saint Michael and All Angels for more than 30 years, during which he has served on the Vestry, chaired the Saint Michael

Foundation, and served as Co-chair of the 1994-95 Rector Search Committee. He was a delegate or alternate to six Diocesan Conventions, coordinated the church’s first long-range plan along with The Rev. Pam Theodore, and served several stints on the Stewardship Committee. Bob organized and led several mission trips to Honduras and has led several Bible studies for men and couples. He and Katherine have three grown daughters. Bob works for an independent oil and gas company.

Jeff Rice Jeff joined Saint Michael and All Angels in 1997 after growing up Methodist and marrying into the Presbyterian Church (where she served as a Session member, analogous to our Vestry). She has served Saint Michael in numerous capacities

including Senior Warden, Saint Michael Foundation chair, Altar Guild Directress, Women of Saint Michael Gift Committee Chair as well as the organization’s Program Chair, Parish Party Auction Chair, and Mission and Outreach Committee Chair. Outside the church, Jeff has been an active civic volunteer having served on the Dallas Woman’s Club Board of Governors, the Executive Committee of the Dallas Garden Club, the SMU Library Board, and The Hockaday School Board of Trustees, to name a few. She and her husband, Darrel, have three adult children and a one month old granddaughter.

Van Sheets, Co-chairVan grew up in a family of Baptist leaders in North Carolina, and was confirmed in his 20’s. Wherever he and his wife, Brenda, have lived they have been leaders in their Episcopal Church. In the mid-1980s they met in a singles

class at Saint Michael and were married shortly thereafter. Van was active in mission and outreach, and served on the Saint Michael Foundation Board. They moved to New Orleans and were heavily involved in children’s activities and stewardship, and Van served on the church’s foundation board. After a move to San Francisco, Van served their church in several capacities including Senior Warden and stewardship co-chair. He also served on the Diocese of California’s stewardship committee and as a convention delegate. After returning to Dallas and Saint Michael in 2007, Van has served in various leadership roles including Treasurer, Senior Warden, and Diocesan convention delegate. Outside of church, he has been CEO of mid-size companies in diverse industries, and an entrepreneur and advisor in early stage technology companies. Van and Brenda have three daughters, 23, 19 and 17.

Tricia StewartTricia was baptized, confirmed, and married at Saint Michael and All Angels. Her adult involvement began when

her first child entered the Mothers’ Day Out program. She has chaired the Child Development and Children and Family Ministry Committees, been involved with the Nativity Pageant and taught Sunday School, and served on the Youth Committee and the “Youth Steering Wheel” advisory committee.

Tricia and her husband, Tom, coordinated the Disciples Confirmation Class from 2010 – 2014. Tricia currently serves as Recording Secretary for the Women of Saint Michael and is a member of its Gifts Committee. Outside of church, Tricia volunteers with Meals on Wheels, Highland Park High School PTA, Junior Charity League, and the Dallas Alumnae Association of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She and Tom have three children, ages 22, 19 and 16.

Kathy Jenevein, Junior Warden, ex-officioKathy grew up Methodist in Arkansas, and became a member of Saint Michael and All Angels in 1987, and she soon became involved on the Early Childhood Committee. She

co-founded the MOMS group and sat on the Children and Family Ministry Committee and Youth Ministry Committee. Kathy has taught Sunday School and the Disciples Confirmation Class, has been a Neighborhood Good Shepherd and on the Vestry Nominating Committee. Kathy has had many jobs for the Women of Saint Michael including Program Chair, Parish Party Chair, Mardi Gras Party Chair, and will chair its Gift Committee in the coming year. Kathy and her husband, Patrick, have three young adult daughters.

Matt Waller, Senior Warden, ex-officioMatt grew up in San Antonio, the son of Clifford Waller, a now-retired Episcopal priest in the Diocese of West Texas. Matt transferred his membership to Saint Michael and All Angels when

he moved to Dallas in 1989. He has served as Treasurer for two years and is active in Bible study groups. Currently, he is a member of the Vestry serving as Senior Warden and Co-Chair of the Campus Planning Committee. Matt and his wife, Mary, have two college age children, both of whom were raised at Saint Michael and are graduates of the Episcopal School of Dallas, where Matt has served on the Board of Directors. Outside the church, Matt has been involved investment banking and hedge fund management, and most recently has focused on investing in early stage companies.

Reading Partners Needed to Help O.M. Roberts StudentsOne way to help elementary students be successful in their school careers is to be sure they know how to read. At O.M. Roberts school in Jubilee Park, Saint Michael and the Jubilee Park Community Center is working through Reading Partners to do just that.

Reading Partners,  a national education organization, works with elementary schools  to provide a proven literacy intervention program for students reading between 6 months to 2.5 years below grade level.  At O.M. Roberts, Reading Partners creates a Reading Center, recruits and trains community volunteers to tutor students, using a highly structured, research-based curriculum. 

You can be one of those volunteers to tutor students beginning this coming fall. One can volunteer  for as little as one hour a week and work with the same student year-round.  Formal teaching experience is  NOT  required. Training and support is provided on-site.  Reading Centers are open  Monday-Thursday,  8:00-4:00.  All volunteers must  complete the volunteer application, which includes a background check. They must also have a reliable form of transportation and attend an individual 45-min orientation. Jubilee Summer Volunteer Opportunities: Summer Camp — Jubilee’s summer camp serves 180 children, offering enrichment activities, field trips, and sports. Classroom assistants are asked to commit to a one week session from 7:30 to 2:30 each day. The camp is a seven week program that runs from June 15-July 31. Volunteers must be at least 15 years old or going into 10th grade.

Can’t commit to a full week? Join us as a field trip chaperone! Dates are June 26th, July 10th or July 24th! Must be 21 or older.

Stewardship Building Enthusiastic Team

The numbers of Stewardship Team members for 2016 are nearing 100, with nearly three-fourths of them returning from last year’s committee.

“This confirms that there is a lot of enthusiasm for this church, its ministries, and the job that Saint Michael is doing in our community,” said Stewardship chairs Mary and Rosser Newton. “Our job is to perpetuate and grow the impact our church is having in the lives of our parishioners and those we touch through our outreach. We invite anyone and everyone to join our dynamic Stewardship Committee and help us make a difference.”

Why I love Saint Michael and All Angel’s ChurchI grew up at Saint Michael’s and was very active in high school. When I went off to college, I took a long period

of absence from the church. When I finally came back in 2006, I found a new family and could not live without my church again! I joined the acolyte corps and rose to be a verger – which is my favorite thing that I do. I have joined many other groups at Saint Michael’s – Meals on Wheels, the

knitting ministry, tutoring at O.M. Roberts Elementary in Jubilee and others. Saint Michael’s is my family!

Last summer I turned 70 and discovered that I needed to start taking funds out of my IRA account. It was a great thing. I upped my pledge by a considerable amount and changed my will to leave a nice amount into the Saint Michael’s Foundation. It makes me so happy that I am able to support my church in this way because the church supports me in more ways than I could ever number.

stewardship is not about paying dues to an institution. Stewardship is not a code word for fundraising.   Stewardship is not keeping the church lights on or paying a decent staff.

Stewardship is about responding to God’s generosity with a glad, grateful,

Stephen Ministers are Trained to Help

Stephen Ministers have received more than 50 hours of intensive training to provide quality, Christ-centered, confidential care for a person’s hurts and needs. They help parishioners experiencing one of life’s “rough patches” find hope, healing, and a sense of self-worth.

The person may have lost a loved one; have a personal health crisis; job loss; divorce; spiritual crisis; a financial crisis; a move from a lifetime home to a much different living space. Whatever the cause, the Stephen Minister is someone to walk beside them during the time of crisis; to just be there. The benefit is a caring relationship with someone who will faithfully listen, empathize, pray with and for them and encourage them with Christ’s love and care.

The Altar Guild at its annual dinner May 8 honored Madalyn Teal, its out-going Directress, and welcomed Angela Howell, who will lead the team in the 2015 - 2016 year.

During the reception before dinner the Rector, Bob Dannals, presented Madalyn with the traditional Directress Cross, symbolic of her year of service. Madalyn in expressing her thanks honored her team captains, Laura Vasquez, Carol Ann Langer, Charlie Smith, Margaret Goodrich, and Susan Boldrick.

Our Youth Ministry, Sunday School Schedules, and A New Offering

Youth Ministry

Ministry Architects recommended that we reconfigure our youth ministry staff to reflect a greater emphasis in the church and more communication with other ministries. To do this, we are adding a full-time priest to work with, oversee, and help guide our program. Ultimately we will have two full-time youth ministers, one for High School and one for Middle School/Junior High,

and a full-time Logistics Administrator to help with the program and the many computer needs a modern youth program demands.

Carolina Armstrong will continue as the Senior High Youth Minister and The Rev. Oliver Butler, Associate for Youth and Young Adult Ministries, will be working with Carolina, the youth, and their families to renew and grow our programs. Additionally, we are putting together a Search Team to find the perfect Middle School Youth Minister and the support and technical person who can help as our Logistics Administrator.

Sunday School Schedules

When is Sunday School? It is a strange question but one that happened a lot this past year. Saint Michael has had some wonderful speakers and special presentations throughout the year but many of them bumped Sunday School. We ended up with a quirky schedule with one or two weeks of Sunday School followed by two weeks off. The only consistent model was inconsistency. In 2015-16 we will have a full schedule of Sunday School. We will only miss 3 Sundays this Fall: September 27 – The Feast of Saint Michael/the Dannals’ Farewell, November 1 – All Saints Day, and November 29 – Thanksgiving Weekend. On All Saints Day we will not have Sunday School but will have an all church breakfast. If it is Sunday and the kids are at Saint Michael, we will be teaching them about God, community, and the Bible.

A New Fellowship Class

Another frequent question: Where is the parent/young adult or maybe middle-adult class? In a classic “Catch 22,” we have heard that since there were no classes for parents or young adults, folks didn’t bring the kids, or the kid’s Sunday School schedule was so confusing no one would come. The children and youth Sunday School schedule is ironed out (see previous article), now we are addressing the offerings for parents/young adults as well. Thanks to Kesh and Taylor Curtis, we are organizing a class that will meet this Fall and Spring to address the needs, hopes, dreams, and concerns of our parents, singles, divorced, young adult, and slightly older young adults. The hope is to gather folks 25-50, to teach, share, and build community around God and Christ’s church. I will be helping to lead and teach this class with a host of other guests and speakers. We want to gather up a missing generation at Saint Michael and renew our souls in the process. Share the news with friends and join us.

Vacation Bible Heads for the Hills (Mountain) June 8 – 12

Beginning Monday, June 8 more than 200 Vacation Bible School children will begin their hike to Everest where they will learn about conquering life’s challenges with “God’s Mighty Power.”

They will be accompanied on their journey by more than 100 youth and adult volunteers. Vacation Bible school runs from

9:00 to 12:00 Noon each day.

During the week the kids will embark on an “icy” expedition where they will overcome obstacles with God’s awesome power. They will get rock-solid Bible truths that will guide them through life’s challenges.

Vacation Bible School is filled with fun, excitement, and soul-searching learning.

Edge Raises Money for Jubilee Little Libraries – Installation in June

The Edge (4th and 5th graders) raised more than $600 at its May 24 Bake Sale for four Little Free Libraries that will be installed in Jubilee Park on Friday, June 12. The Edgers built the Little Free Libraries on Wednesday evenings over the past month.

I have been at this a while so I knew better than to answer her question directly. Instead, I began by working out of gratitude: “Isn’t it great that we have four seemingly qualified candidates from whom to choose.” This was met with a sigh.

As the meeting ended our parishioner commented that I still hadn’t told her how we should vote. I thought about saying, “I doubt God is up all night worried about this choice.” I even considered: “Do you really believe God is thinking, ‘I hope the diocese doesn’t choose the guy from Canada because I can’t guide and direct a former seminary dean from another country’?” Instead I muster up as much spiritual maturity as I can find and say, “let’s rely on our conscience.” Which, in effect, is saying “I dunno.”

We all live with many callings, but the greatest is not to be in the correct job, to gain the right salary, to be in a particular parish or diocese. Our greatest callings are to be good stewards of God’s world, to care for all of God’s children – not just our own, and to be what Luther called “little Christs” whether we’re a banker, teacher, homemaker, nurse, engineer, or priest.

As Frederick Buechner reminds us, “the word ‘vocation’ has a dull ring to it, taking on the drone of a commencement speech given on the sprawling green under the hot sun.” “But,” Buechner continues, “in terms of what it means, it is not dull at all. ‘Vocare’ is a person’s calling ... it is the work that he or she is summoned to spend his or her life doing ... it is the place where a person’s deep joy and the world’s deep hunger meet.”

As I write, twenty-four Saint Michaelites are having a marvelous pilgrimage through Italy. Our spiritual itinerary includes the Vatican and Florence with a stop in between at Assisi, home of the first famous Francis. I think we all feel enormous gratitude to be able to travel, to learn, to discern, to enjoy communities of faith, to be inspired as we seek our own place in God’s world, and to consider how we enable others to live well.

There is often a fine line between being a spectator – a mere tourist – and to participate as a pilgrim. In particular, this pilgrimage reminds me that we’re always in search of “what’s next?” and “so what?” Nothing gets in the way of our higher calling more than an intense need to get the right answer

on which fork in life’s road to take or which candidate to choose. As C.S. Lewis once said, “God can use even the wrong road to get you to the right place.”

So, in this season of vocational tracking and choices, what Chaim said to his mother is a good moral compass: “I don’t want to keep people from dying; I want to show them how to live.”
