FR. EARL DREAMS: RE-OPENING OF OUR CHURCH BUILDING

Late on Thursday afternoon, June 25, I received a copy of the COVID-19 Parish, Church and Pastoral MinistryGuidelines for Alert Level 2. Friday afternoon, at the time that this bulletin is being prepared I will be attendinga ZOOM meeting with Archbishop Peter Hundt and the priests of the Archdiocese.

We rejoice that we can once again celebrate Mass in our Church building, but we can only do so by adhering toboth the Department of Health and the Archdiocesan Guidelines.

At our parish level we have been doing much to prepare, but the document requires study and discussion in applyingit to our specific parish.

The Archbishop acknowledges that the many Guidelines may feel strange and uncomfortable. But they are grounded in two greatest Commandments, Love God and Love your neighbour as yourself.

The following are some of the basic practices outlined in this document.

- The Archbishop dispenses us from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass. He encourages all who are elderly, frail, or at higher risk of complications due to COVID-19, to not attend public worship at this time.

- Virtual worship should be maintained at Level 2 and into the foreseeable future for those who cannot come toChurch for prayer and worship.

- A maximum of 50 people will be permitted in the Church at one time. This number will include the priest, staffand volunteers. We are looking at various options to ensure this limit is not exceeded.

- There will be one door for entrance and another door for exit. This will be determined and communicated toyou.

- There will be clear markings on the floor and in the pews to ensure physical distancing.

- The use of masks or face coverings for all people over the age of 2 are recommended while you are in theChurch building. Please bring your own mask, if possible.

- Proper hand hygiene is required. You are encouraged to bring and use your own hand sanitizer. We will alsoprovide hand sanitizing stations throughout the Church.

- Our Church will be regularly cleaned and sanitized after every parish gathering.

- All paper items, such as hymnals and other loose paper items, have been removed from the Church.

- Parishioners will now be able to receive communion under one form. We will advise the process after furtherstudy.

- After consultation, the implementation, and approval from the Archdiocese, can I set the date for our firstparish Mass.

We ask for your continued patience. We encourage you to keep up to date with our Tuesday Updates and bulletins posted on our parish website. As requested by Archbishop Hundt, the complete COVID-19 Parish,Church and Pastoral Ministry Guidelines for Alert Level 2 Archdiocesan document accompanies this bulletin andis also posted on our parish website.

OUR ‘PIUS’ SMILE

The subject of reincarnation came up at a church meeting. One overweight person in the group said, “This idea of reincarnation sounds great. I would like to come back as a size seven.”

“My husband and I adopted a new greyhound who is 4½ years old, and has been in a kennel all his life, so being in a home is an adjustment and process. I don’t remember when I said, ‘No’ so many times in my life! While at a women’s circle meeting at a parish church, one of the woman mentioned how she had a hard time saying ‘No’ to people. I suggested, ‘Get a new dog! You’ll be saying ‘No!’ More than you thought possible.” The Joyful Noiseletter Vol. 35, No 4, July-August 2020

ELDER MINISTRY’STHOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

In MemoriamThe following is a tribute to Esther Buckley, from Rita Janes, President of our Parish’s CWL -

“I was so saddened to receive this news today. Our long time and active member, Esther Buckley, passed away peacefully and suddenly yesterday at the Health Sciences Hospital.

As you know, Esther rarely missed a CWL meeting or any other CWL activity. She loved the CWL. She loved the group discussions and very much the chats over a cup of tea after the meeting. I never saw her come to a meeting without some of her home baked goodies to enjoy along with our cup of tea.

She was a kind, compassionate and caring woman. I can speak to this personally. When I had my leg broke early winter she kept in contact, giving encouraging words and also advice from her medical knowledge from her years as a nurse and nurse educator for many years. The St Pius x Catholic Women’s League offers its deepest sympathy to her sister, Jeannie, and her other family members and friends.

Esther’s obituary can be found at https://www.cauls.ca/obituary/esther-buckley-rn-bve

Blessings and together we remember our sister, Esther, in our prayer.”

A Special Birthday

DE MELLO FOR KIDSOF ALL AGES

Wise Words

Adults give children all kinds of

instructions: “Stand up straight’”

“Don’t put you elbows on the table”.

“Eat your vegetables”. “Brush your

teeth”. It’s good to follow these

instructions because they teach us

how to act. The Bible gives us lots of instructions

too, like “Love God” and “Love others”. The Bible

says we will be happy if we listen to these

instructions and do what they say.

Wise words make me happy and good.

I listen to them and do what I should.

SAINTS SPEAK

Never mention anything concerning thyself which people account praiseworthy, such as learning, goodness, birth, unless with the hope of doing good thereby, and then let it be done with humility, remembering that these are gifts of God."St. Teresa of Avila [16th C], Maxims

Have patience with all things, but chiefly have patience with yourself. Do not lose courage in considering your own imperfections but instantly set about remedying them-- every day begin the task anew.St. Francis de Sales

The only way to make rapid progress along the path of divine love is to remain very little and to put all our trust in Almighty God. That is what I have done.St. Therese de Lisieux

THE ELOQUENT PRAYER

Leave me alone with God,as much as may be.

As the tide draws the watersclose in upon the shore,

make me an island, set apart, along with you, God,

holy to you. Then, with the turning of the tide, prepare me to carry your presence

to the busy world beyond;the world that rushes in on me,

till the water comes againand folds me back to you.

AmenSt Aidan of Lindisfarne (c.600-651)

IN MEMORIAMDR. ROBERT WALLEY,

MD

Dr. Robert Walley, MD, passed peacefully away on June 22. There are many tributes from various sources, but we are going to write this tribute from a parish perspective.

Bob, his wife, Susan, and their family have been long time parishioners

Bob was an OB/GYN. He was the founder of MaterCare International (MCI), a group of Catholic obstetricians and gynaecologists, midwives and general practitioners whose mission is “to improve the lives and health of mothers and babies, both born and unborn” and to reduce abortion worldwide and “maternal and perinatal mortality, morbidity in developing countries” through service, training, research, and advocacy, its website states.

In everything he did, the dignity of the person from conception to natural death was a founding principle of MCI.

In our Parish, Bob Walley and MCI were synonymous.

Bob’s work with MCI, brought him to many parts of the world. His wife, Susan, was at home raising their seven children. He stated that all his work could not be done without Susan.

In recent years Susan has been in declining health. Even though Bob was not well himself, he provided consistent daily care to her until the COVID-19 pandemic. He was always delighted to tell everyone and show pictures of his visits with her.

Counted among his many honours is a membership in the Order of the Knights of Malta. In 2012 he was bestowed a Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal in our Church. This medal is the highest award the pope can bestow upon laity and religious. He also received the Adam Exner Award for Catholic Excellence in Public Life from the Catholic Civil Rights League in 2017.

To his children and grandchildren we express our deepest sympathy, be assured that we will keep all of you in our prayers. Bob always walked by faith and we believe he will continue to look after you.

If you would like to donate to MCI, visit their website at www.matercare.org .www.spx.ca

DRIVE THRU ADORATION

Fr. Joe Mroz, SJ, has resumed our parish’s parking lot “Drive Thru Adoration” .

You are invited to join us for an hour of Adoration at the main entrance door of St. Pius X Church every Sunday, 3:00 pm, with Benediction at 4:00 pm, until the churches are reopened.

Our prayer before the Blessed Sacrament continues so long as its participants follow “Public Health Special Measures Orders” which includes everyone maintaining strict social distancing.

Participants are gently reminded to remain in or close to their cars while parking for prayer.

2020 ANNUAL CEMETERY LITURGY SERVICES

Due to the public health restrictions in place to control the spread of the COVID-19 Virus, families are advised that the annual liturgy services in all Roman Catholic cemeteries in the Archdiocese of St. John’s will not be held this year.

We apologize for any inconvenience or disappointment this may cause.

As individual cemetery services cannot take place this summer, Archbishop Peter Hundt will celebrate a special Mass for the intention of all the deceased of our Archdiocese and Province.

It will be televised on NTV at 10:30 am on Sunday, July 19, 2020.

CHANGE IS HARD

The word change normally refers to new beginnings. But transformation, the mystery we’re examining, more often happens not when something new begins, but when something old falls apart. The pain of something old falling apart—chaos—invites the soul to listen at a deeper level. It invites, and sometimes forces, the soul to go to a new place because the old place is falling apart. Most of us would never go to new places in any other way. The mystics use many words to describe this chaos: fire, dark night, death, emptiness, abandonment, trial, the Evil One. Whatever it is, it does not feel good and it does not feel like God. We will do anything to keep the old thing from falling apart. This is when we need patience and guidance, and the freedom to let go instead of tightening our controls and certitudes. Perhaps Jesus is describing just this phenomenon when he says, “It is a narrow gate and a hard road that leads to life, and only a few find it” (Matthew 7:13–14). Not accidentally, he mentions this narrow road right after teaching the Golden Rule. He knows how much letting go it takes to “treat others as you would like them to treat you” (7:12). So, a change can force a transformation. Spiritual transformation always includes a usually disconcerting reorientation. It can either help people to find a new meaning or it can force people to close down and slowly turn bitter. The difference is determined precisely by the quality of our inner life, our spirituality.SOURCE: The Wisdom Pattern: Order, Disorder, Reorder by Richard Rohr, OFM
