CURRENT ART WORK IN ST. FELIX CHURCH
MARY ASCENDING
by Sr. Marie Pierre Semler, M.M. ©MKSISTERS
It is not known at what time Mary’s body was again united with her spirit after death and internment.
No one witnessed the rising of her body from the earth on its flight heavenward.
It may have been in the midst of multitudes of angels and other holy souls singing her praises.
Painters have pictured her so.
In this sculpture it is supposed that in the quiet of the night, by the power of the Holy Spirit, her spirit is again permitted to give life to her body and she
rises in natural simplicity in a glow of light wrapped and hidden in the night.

FROM THE PASTOR
Praised be Jesus Christ!
Christ told his disciples: “I am the Vine, you are the branches, whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit.” The lives of the saints are the ripe fruits that grow on this vine of holiness which is the mystical body of Christ.
At times when we are tempted toward discouragement on account of our own sins, and the sins of others in the Church, it is important to call to mind the great examples of the saints as inspiring witnesses, and as visible proof of the power that prayer and the sacraments contain to transform ordinary human beings into extraordinary models of sanctity.
August 20 - St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) St. Bernard was a leader in an important reform movement of monastic life which swept through early medieval Europe at the beginning of the second millennium. He left an important contribution of theological writings, especially about the Blessed Virgin Mary. Despite the fact that he was a monk dedicated to the life of the monastery, he was often called upon to settle church disputes and deal with more worldly affairs because his holiness and counsel was highly respected. St. Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry in Rochester (which was previously our Diocesan seminary) has this saint as its patron.
August 21 – St. Pius X (1835-1914) Born as Giuseppe Sarto to a rather poor family in northern Italy, Pope Pius X encouraged the practice of devout, daily reception of Holy Communion and lowered the age of reception of First Holy Communion to the “age of reason”-about 7 years old (children previously received around the age of 12). In this same vein, he vigorously promoted the religious education of Catholic youth throughout the world, to such an extent that, in my opinion, most youths who grew up in the early decades of the 20th century were remarkably well catechized in their faith—at least here in the United States. Pope Pius X was also very strong in defending the Church from a series of theological controversies and heresies which were threatening to break out at that time, but were more or less fought back by his quick and heroic efforts.
August 22 – The Queenship of Mary Exactly one week after the Feast of the Assumption, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Queenship of Mary. The two feasts go hand in hand. Our Blessed Mother was assumed Body and Soul into heaven, where she now reigns as Queen of Heaven and Earth due to her unique and singular relationship to her Divine Son.
August 27 – St. Monica (331-387) This saint is beloved by so many Catholic mothers who pray for their children to return to the practice of the faith. This is because St. Monica was the mother of St. Augustine, whose remarkable adult conversion and baptism is considered to be the fruit of his mother Monica’s countless prayers. I love the account of St. Monica’s death, which took place in a coastal town outside of Rome, far from her home in Northern Africa. As she approached death, she told her son Augustine: “Bury my body wherever you will, do not be concerned about that. One thing only I ask you (Augustine), that you remember me at the altar of the Lord.” A great witness of the Mass as a powerful prayer for the souls of the faithful departed!
August 28 – St. Augustine (354-430) Without a doubt, St. Augustine is one of the greatest minds in the history of the Church, and indeed, in the entirety of Western Civilization. He converted to the Catholic faith as an adult after having lived a rather sinful life and having spent time as an adherent to a heretical sect known as the Manicheans. In addition to the prayers of his mother, he was heavily influenced intellectually at the time of his conversion by St. Ambrose, then Bishop of Milan, who was a huge early intellectual influence upon Augustine. Eventually he was ordained a Bishop of the city of Hippo, in northern Africa, where he defended his flock through his pastoral care and many theological writings. His most famous quote: “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless, until they rest in Thee.”
August 29 – The Beheading of St. John the Baptist It is always important to remember one of the key reasons that John the Baptist was killed. He defended the sanctity of marriage and refused to stand silent when the ruler Herod Antipas took his own brother ’s wife as his own.
This is not an exhaustive list of August saints by any means, but a good sampling of some great heroes of the faith.
