As another election year is underwaythe same concerns that have affectedthe senior population in past electionssurface once again. Historically, it seemsthat four areas have been involved. Firstis the topic of health. With this yearsissue c e n t e r i n g o n t h e M e d i c a r eprescription drug legislation that waspassed at the end of the 2003 Session ofthe 108th Congress. The second topic isIncome Security. The center of this issue is the“privatization” of Social Security – the possibility ofallowing people to invest Social Security funds in privateinvestment accounts and the possible reduction ofbenefits in the future. Third, is Long-Term Care. The skyrocketing costs of long-term care is certainly a problemfor seniors who have a critical need for such care, andthe service providers who are trying to provide itaffordably. Finally, the topic of Community Service. Thisyears emphasis is housing and transportation bothimportant issues that have special significance here inSan Diego. As in the past Republicans, Democrats, andIndependents alike will debate all of these issuesbecause that is what takes place during an electionyear. Many different outcomes are possible. What mustnot be forgotten through all the political rhetoric and resulting legislation are the Seniors whose lives aredirectly affected.
