STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT:

And a voice came from the heavens, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:17

Two thoughts come to mind when reading this. First, God, Our Father, is so generous, that he gave his only son, whom he really loves, to us so that we can have eternal life with him in heaven. God, Our Creator, really loves us, too! Second, Jesus was obedient to his Father’s will, even to the point of death. This is a reminder that our own lives are pure gifts from God and meant to serve God and others.

In the Rite of Baptism, we are called upon to renounce evil and to profess our belief in God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God is pure and holy. Throughout our lives we strive, with God’s help, and by living the Christian life, to become holy. Throughout our lives we renounce evil, too. Specifically, we renounce the devil, the “Father of Lies.” The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has a book available for sale, called Rebuking the Devil, by Pope Francis. It is available at their website (usccb.org) or can be ordered at other bookstores. It shows ways to renounce evil so as to better embrace the life of God. Religious Education classes on Sundays at St. Paul School have resumed. God bless our students in their studies. As adults, let us make it a point to prioritize the study of our faith more and commit ourselves to prayer & reading scripture & other wholesome literature. The website aleteia.org has had some interesting articles recently. You might want to consider reading some of them. Pray for Peace. With love, prayers, and gratitude,

Dear Friends,

Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan

to be baptized by him. - Matthew 3:13

Happy Feast of the Baptism of the Lord!

Today’s feast ends the Christmas Season and launches us into Ordinary Time. In Ordinary Time we count off the Sundays with ordinal numbers: first, second, third, etc., Sundays in Ordinary Time. We then enter the Season of Lent with Ash Wednesday on February 26. The First Sunday of Lent will fall on Leap Day, February 29. Easter Sunday will be April 12.

During the year we may want to take time to learn the date of our baptism and celebrate it – maybe even once a month to remind us that our baptism was our one-time birth into life in Christ. We live our baptism by living our Christian life. Talk in your family about how you are living your baptism. Are you godparents? Give your godchildren or godparents a call. Take time to share family photos and videos.

In our Daily Reflections for Advent and Christmas booklet, the author reflects on the Father’s words to Jesus, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:16-17). He remarks, “It takes our entire lives to accept the truth of our baptism, to realize we are God’s beloved.” Why does it take so long?

Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in

2019 is January 27 - February 2. The theme for National Catholic Schools Week 2019 is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation.

Poverty Awareness Month

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has designated January as “Poverty Awareness Month.” Lack of affordable housing, job opportunities, & community resources are realities that can trap families in the cycle of poverty. Catholic Charities provides basic needs assistance to help people with such things as food, shelter, clothing & essential prescription medications. We also help families develop budgets, cut unnecessary expenses, & set goals that can lead to greater financial stability.
