Prayers to Begin our New School Year God of wisdom and might, we praise you for the wonder of our being, for body, mind and spirit. Be with the children of St. Matthew’s Catholic School and the children of our School of Religion as they begin this new school year. Bless them and their teachers, catechists and staff. Give them strength and grace as their bodies grow; wisdom and knowledge as they search for understanding; and peace and zeal within their hearts as they grow closer to you. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Msg . John Talesfore, Pastor

Dear St. Matthew Parishioners, Families and Friends, As another school year begins, I’m reminded of where we’ve just been, what’s happening now, and where we’re going…. Where we’ve just been…We bid a fond farewell to our class of 2016 who are beginning the next chapter in their lives. Amid the blue gowns, smiles and tears, I’m sure there were reflections of their time here and an optimism of the future. Over the past nine years I have been witness to these students displaying their strengths and abilities in many different venues, and I have been thoroughly impressed. They are a remarkable class. May God bless them in their future endeavors. What’s happening now…We look forward to continuing a high standard of excellence as we move into the 2016-17 school year. The Church teaches that parents are the first teachers of their children in faith. In support of the Archdiocese of San Francisco Council of Priests Committee, our goal this school year is to continue to form a school community in which teachers, administrators, parents, students, and priests work together to model Catholic faith. On Sunday afternoon we welcome our 55 new families to the Ice Cream Social, may God bless them in their new journey. Where we’re going… The school supplies are securely placed in the backpacks by the front door. Uniforms are waiting to be worn with pride. The first day of school arrives on Thursday, filled with anticipation and excitement! The campus looks beautiful a welcome site for our students arriving this week. Its’ been too quiet around here! I’ll leave you with this verse for everyone to enjoy.
Twas the Night Before School Started
Author Unknown ‘Twas
the night before school started, When all through the town, The parents were cheering
It was a riotous sound! By eight, kids were washed
And tucked into bed… when memories of homework
Filled them with dread. New pencils, new folders, new notebooks, too!
New teachers, new friends Their anxiety grew!..
The parents just giggled when They learned of this fright
And shouted upstairs “Go to bed! It’s a School night!”
Blessings, Ann Connelly Admissions Director, St. Ma hew Catholic School

Jubilee Year of Mercy Twenty first Sunday in Ordinary Time This Jubilee Year of Mercy and Pope Francis’ ministry have renewed our understanding that the Church’s heart is open wide to all, and the heart of the gospel is God’s mer-cy. Flooded with God’s mercy, our hearts should overflow as channels bringing to wounded and weary hearts Jesus’ healing mercy. For Jesus warns, our own salvation is not guaranteed by the Liturgy of the Word (“you taught in our streets”) nor by the Eucharist (“we ate and drank in your company”) (Luke 13:26). People far from that banquet, “from the east and the west and from the north and the south . . . will recline at table in the kingdom of God” (13:29). Rather, showing mercy is key to obtaining mercy ourselves (Matthew 5:7). So we should never dare ask what “someone” asked Jesus, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” (Luke 13:23). The crucial question is “Will I be saved?” And Jesus’ answer is another question: “Have you shown mercy to everyone, freely, gladly, no limits, no conditions, no exceptions?” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S.
Paluch Co., Inc.
