ST. PIUS X AND THE OLYMPICGAMES

Vatican City, 27 July 2012 (VIS) - It was 1908 when,

in the wake of a serious economic crisis, Rome re-nounced hosting the Olympic Games which wereeventually celebrated in London, England. In thesame year Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of themodern Olympics, sought help from the Vatican tosupport the Games, and Pope St. Pius X in personoffered him his support.More than one hundred years later, the British capi-tal is hosting the Olympic Games for the third time. The event is due to open this evening. That moment at the beginning of the twentieth cen-tury is described in a book entitled "Pio X e lo sport"

by Antonella Stelitano. At that time "less than oneper cent of the population practised any sportingactivity, ... and sport was used only as a form of mili-tary training or as a pastime for the upper classes",the author explained in an interview with VaticanRadio. However "St. Pius X ... was aware of the educa-tional potential of sport". He saw it as a way "to ap-proach young people, and to bring them togetherwhile following certain rules and showing respect foradversaries. I believe", the author explained, "thathe understood that it was possible to bring people

together simply, without any problems of race, relig-ion or differing political ideas".

At that time in history many people did not under-stand the importance of exercise, said AntonellaStelitano who concluded her interview by recallingan anecdote whereby Pius X told one of his cardi-nals: "All right, if it is impossible to understand thatthis can be done, then I myself will do exercise infront of everyone so that they may see that, if thePope can do it, anyone can do it".

May they rest in peaceQue descansan en paz

This week will see the summertime celebration ofthe Transfiguration of the Lord. The story of the Transfigu-ration is proclaimed twice each year; once on the SecondSunday of Lent, and then again on August 6. In Lent, therevelation of Jesus glory foreshadows the triumph ofEaster. During the summer, this feast comessignificantlyforty days before the Exaltation of the HolyCross.

In the Gospel proclaimed on this day, Peter wantsto know if he should build three tents. In Hebrew, thetents are sukkot, rickety harvest shacks also called in Eng-lish tabernacles (from the Latin word for little shelters)that harvesters set up in fields so they can stay there towork day and night. Harvest booths are built and orna-mented for the Jewish festival ofSukkot. One aspect ofthis festival is eager anticipation for the ingathering of allpeoples (including ancestors Moses and Elijah) underGods own sukkot shalom, the tent of peace.

In some patristic traditions, the late summer and early au-tumn of the church year are imagined as an extended in-gathering festival that begins today and reaches fulfillmentat Epiphany.

Todays Gospel has the crowd asking Jesus threequestions. First, When did you get here, to which Jesusresponds by rebuking them for their failure to grasp hismiracle as a sign, an occasion to put faith in him. Theirsecond question about accomplishing the works of Godhas Jesus respond that faith is the work that God wishes.

Many scholars believe this is Johns answer to the faith-works dichotomy emerging in the early Christian community.Faith is the work of God in the believer, John would have usunderstand. The third question asked by the crowd is a re-quest for a sign that would allow them to put faith in Jesus,as the manna in the desert allowed the Israelites to put faithin the Lord God. Jesus answers by revealing himself as thebread of life that comes down from heaven and gives lifeto the world.
