Catechist Corner
What is Catechesis? Catechesis is nothing other than
the process of teaching the Gospel to others. Jesus em-
powered the Church to continue His mission when He said,
“Full authority has been given to me both in heaven and on
earth; go, therefore and make disciples of all the nations. Bap-
tize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Spirit. Teach them to carry out everything I have com-
manded you. And know that I am with you always, until the
end of time.” (Mt. 28:18-20)
This great commission has been handed to women and men,
who God has called, to proclaim the Good News. I would like
to invite anyone who is willing to take the challenge to grow in
their own faith while helping our youth grow in theirs by be-
coming a catechist in our religious education program here at
St. Mary. We have one of the largest programs in the Evans-
ville Diocese; the kids are dedicated to coming each week and
learning about our Catholic Faith, and to make this happen we
need adults willing to step up and be role models for our youth.
Think about it….pray about it….and if you feel God is calling
you to do this, please contact me.
God Bless, Martha

Dear Friends,
This week I asked Deacon elect John Huether to write a little about himself for all of you to learn more about him. I have had the honor
of knowing and working with John over the past 12 years. His ordination will be August 3 at 11:00am at St. Benedict Cathedral in
Evansville. Attend if you can and please keep John in your prayers. We will have a reception at both parishes after he is ordained so all
of you can meet and greet John and Jane. Fr. Gary
Hello,
I’m John Huether, soon to be ordained a permanent deacon for the Diocese of Evansville. It will be my privilege to serve the parishes of
Precious Blood and St. Mary, Ireland. Here’s a little about me and my family:
Jane and I have been married 37 years and have three adult children: Emily, Dominic and Andrew. We live in downtown Ireland a few
doors from the stop light. Many of you might know me from playing guitar at the Teen Mass, at the Spanish Mass at Scout retreats, or
CRHP weekends, over the past several years.
During our marriage, we’ve also lived in Phoenix and Atlanta. We moved back to southern Indiana in 1995, and I’ve been working for
Saint Meinrad Archabbey in the Development office for the past ten years. I’m part of the team that helps people understand, appreciate
and support Saint Meinrad’s work of preparing leaders for the Church. I’m also an Oblate and an alumnus of Saint Meinrad College.
As a permanent deacon, I will serve Bishop Thompson and Father Gary and I hope to lead others to Christ through the three fold office
of word, sacrament and charity. My challenge will be to find a balance of time and attention to God, family, job and ministry. To find
that balance, I’ll look to the Holy Family - Jesus, Mary and Joseph - to be my guide and model. I look forward to meeting you and serv-
ing the parishes. John Huether
Picnic News/Updates
Time to start thinking about Theme Baskets for the picnic.
We are hoping for some new and different ideas. Maybe a gift
card basket from area merchants. Go together with co-workers
and get lots of different cards. How about a: sports memorabil-
ia basket? an entertainment basket? maybe a dinner party bas-
ket? sports game tickets? Just a few ideas. You can drop your
donation off at the parish office.
Surprise Bag Booth: Needed for our parish picnic 700 items
10 cents to $10. New or like new items. Place in marked con-
tainer in church vestibule or bring to the parish office. For
more information, call Pat Bohnenkamper 631-2904 or Mary
Ann Robling 482-6387.
Like to look for bargains? We are looking for items for our
Novelty Stand at picnic. If you are in the clearance or $1 aisle
and see something a young kid would love to have, pick it up.
Could be kid’s tattoos, young girl’s jewelry, bubbles, big candy
bars, small toy trucks, etc. Just no squirt guns. Drop them off
at the parish office.
Quilt Donations: Please send in your $30 donation to the
parish office as soon as possible. Quilt group leaders, please
collect from the people in your group and bring it to the parish
office.
We have had some inquiries about our RCIA (Rite of Chris-
tian Initiation of Adults) program. If you or someone you
know would like to become Catholic, give Martha a call at 482
-7041, ext 45. There is no cost for the classes, all materials are
provided and no commitment in necessary.

TEC ( Teens Encounter Christ) is a three-day experience for
young people who are for searching for goals, for acceptance,
for meaning, and for community. Teens can expect to meet
youth from other areas of the Diocese. Find how God fits in
your life and encounter the Risen Jesus Christ. You will have
time to reflect on your life, ideas, hopes, and dreams away
from home, school, and/or work. The next TEC weekend will
be here, July 27-29. Applications can be found in the back of
church or at http://www.switec.org/.
TEC also accepts adult candidates to make a weekend if they
haven’t experienced TEC! So if you are no longer youthful in
age, but would like to become part of a community of faithful
adults who minister to the young Church, you are invited to
make the weekend as an adult observer. That title may be de-
ceiving to you, but as an adult observer, you still participate
fully in the weekend.

The Moral Challenge
Cain’s question, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” (Gn 4:9), has
global implications, touching not one brother but all our sisters
and brothers. Are we responsible for the fate of the world’s
poor? Must we respond to the needs of suffering refugees? Are
we keepers of the creation for future generations? For the fol-
lowers of Jesus, the answer is yes. Indeed, we are our brothers’
and sisters’ keepers. We have heard the Lord’s command, “Love
your neighbor as yourself.” We accept God’s charge to care for
all human life and for all creation.
