A day at the castle forChernobyl’s childrenCHILDREN from the Chernobylarea in cancer remission visited War-wick Castle.

They were welcomed to the townby deputy mayor, Cllr Richard Eddy, and John Hibben, president of theRotary Club of Warwick, which hasarranged these visits for the pastdecade.

Accompanied by costumed actorsas a variety of medieval characters, the children clambered up the ram-parts and were shown the skills ofarchery, alongside birds of prey and

the castle dungeonHaving never seen a castle of this

magnitude, the children were amazedand particularly enjoyed jousting inthe recently built area.

The Solihull branch of the charityChernobyl Children’s Project hasbrought the children from Belarusfor a holiday to restore their health.

Over 30 years after the nucleardisaster, the area is still highly con-taminated, affecting the air, water, and local produce.

The young people visiting this

year are all in remission from cancer, however are still accompanied bytheir doctor.

During their month-long trip to theUK, they also visit the seaside, thecountry, and eat fruit and vegetablesfree from contamination, in turnallowing their immune systems torecover; thus prolonging their lives.

The children spent two weeksstaying with host families in Solihulland then stayed together for a furthertwo weeks in residential accommo-dation.

Adams prepared forhis toughest test yetCARL Adams believes Strat-ford Town will face one of thetoughest fixtures in their Evo-Stik Southern Premier cal-endar when they visit MerthyrTown tonight, Tuesday.

And despite a clear sense of frus-tration after Saturday’s 1-1 drawwith Royston Town, the Townmanager said it would be typical ofan unpredictable league for Strat-ford to upset the odds with a win.

Adams felt Town had only them-selves to blame for not making itthree wins in a week on Saturday.Despite Ben Stephens’ stylishly-taken opener after two minutes,Town could not kick on to grab acrucial second goal and Roystonlevelled with a 62nd-minute goalfrom Sam Corcoran.

Now, they head to Merthyr’s 3G

pitch at a hostile Penydarren Parkto face a Valleys side looking tocontinue their promotion push.

“Going to Merthyr on a Tuesdaynight is going to be one of thehardest three games in the leagueduring the season,” said Adams.

“It’s a test for my lads and let’ssee how we stand up to it.

“We went there last season on aTuesday night and drew.

“We did it last year and it wouldnot surprise me if we go and drawor go and win. It wouldn’t surpriseme at all.

“That’s why I get frustrated withgames like Saturday againstRoyston. It was there for us to win.We go 1-0 up and we need to driveon for that second goal. We hadchances but didn’t take them.”

Adams’ frustration was onlyincreased by the sight of Edwin

Ahenkorah limping off. The strikerhad to be subbed on 59 minutes, with Mike Taylor coming on, afterdamaging the knee which hasblighted his last nine months.

Ahenkorah had only returned theprevious week after a ligamentinjury and now Adams stressedthey need to get to the bottom ofthe problem, even if that meanssurgery for the former Redditchforward.

“We need to really get it sorted,”said Adams. “It’s the same kneeand it looks like he has got to go fora scan and see if he needs an oper-ation.

“As a club, we can’t carry on theway it’s going.

“We can’t have Edwin out for sixweeks, then in for two weeks andthen out again. It’s not good for meand it’s not good for him.” Carl Adams.
