Abstinence: The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from eating meat for all Catholics who are 14 years old or older.

AAA: In just a few short weeks, our parish has raised $61,980 for the 2020 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal supports many important ministries and programs. Gifts are allocated towards re-ligious education programs, youth ministries, local char-ities, the education of our seminarians, our retired cler-gy, our Catholic schools, and the many ministries pro-vided by the Archdiocese. If you have not made a gift, please prayerfully consider making a pledge or one-time gift. Join us, your parish community, and Growing in Faith, Giving in Love, by sharing your blessings. All funds contributed to the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal are used exclusively for the purposes outlined in the Ap-peal literature. No appeal funds are ever used for legal fees or settlements.

Saint Joseph Medal Award: Joanne Russell was nom-inated to receive the Saint Joseph Medal from Arch-bishop Blair this Sunday, March 22, at the Cathedral. Unfortunately that ceremony has been postponed due to the coronavirus. I wish to acknowledge publicly the outstanding service Joanne has done for the parish in so many areas for several years: Parish Website, Informa-tion Technology, decorating the church at Christmas and Easter, beautification of the church grounds in spring and summer, and so many other areas. Joanne, thank you for all you have done for us. Father Matera

St. Mary's Helping Hands Committee: The Women's Guild would like to offer prepared, delivered meals or grocery shopping to the extent that we can, to anyone who is sick and homebound, or to those who are too vulnerable to go out in public. If you are in need, please contact Pam Carter at [email protected]. We will do our very best to help you out during this trying time.

Weekly Offertory: Last week’s offertory was $12,732. Of this amount, $8,912 came from 145 E-Givers, and $3,820 came from envelopes and cash. In addition to our weekly offertory, we received a contri-bution of $12,000. Thank you for your generous support of St. Mary’s Parish without which we would not be able to carry out our many ministries. Please consider E-Giving which has become more important than ever.

Granny’s Attic & Boutique: Donations needed!Consider donating household items, furniture or gently used clothing. Drop off dates are April 2-5 & 13-14; for specific times and acceptable items check out our Granny's Attic webpage https://stmarysimsbury.org/grannys-attic. Volunteers needed to receive and organize donations, create pricing, cashier, and assist with clean up. Available jobs and times are on the website sign-up genius or contact: Peg Mancarella [email protected].

Steubenville East Conference Registration Now Open: Steubenville is a yearly conference for high school students, including those entering high school in the 2020 school year. The conference is Friday, July 10, to Sunday, July 12. Cost is $300.00. Do not let a finan-cial burden keep you from attending as scholarships and fundraising will be available if needed. Register at stmarysimsbury.org. Contact Sean Hughes at [email protected] with any questions.

Vacation Bible Camp: Vacation Bible Camp is sched-uled for June 29 - July 2. If you are interested in volunteering for planning, setting up, clean up, or helping in any capacity, please contact Kathy Piggott at [email protected].

Unchartered Waters

Dear Parishioners,

As I write this column, I have recently learned the Archdiocese has asked us to cancel all daily and weekend Masses until April 3rd. What will happened after that, I do not know. The cancellation of daily and weekend Masses brings us to unchartered waters—a place where we have never been in our lifetime.

We are accustomed to fasting from ordinary food and drink during Lent, and now we must fast from the most important food of all: the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation. We will not gather together as a community to worship and pray until this crisis has passed.

This will be a difficult time for us. For, while there are moments we complain about having to go to Mass, we have never found ourselves in a situation when we could not go to Mass and receive the Eucharist.

Perhaps this Eucharistic fast that has been imposed upon us will remind us of the pre-cious gift we have in the Mass, which is our participation in the saving death and life-giving resurrection of the Lord.

During this period, I will celebrate Mass every day for you. Celebrating Mass without a congregation will be a strange experience for me and other priests. But it will remind me and my brother priests how important you, the congregation, are. As I celebrate Mass I will pray for you and for the end of this virus. I will also celebrate Mass for the intention of the day listed in the bulletin. Then, at some later date, these intentions will be rescheduled so families can gather and remember their faithful departed.

All parish events are cancelled, but the Parish Staff and I will remain in contact with you through daily messages on the scripture of the day that you will be able to view on the Parish Website: www.stmarysimsbury.org. Please check the website for daily updates.

While this is a stressful time, it can also be an opportunity for us to grow closer to each other and to Christ. Use this time wisely. Pray, reflect, and watch over your family. Do not horde. Rather, share what you have with others. For, when we share, we have an abundance. When we give what we have, we gather.

If there is some way the Parish Staff and I can assist you, do not hesitate to call the par-ish office. If you need food cards, or if you simply need someone to talk to, please call us (860 658 7627).

May God watch over and protect you in the embrace of his love.

Sincerely,

Father Matera

An Update on Parish Activities

Staying Connected - A Daily Bible Service for St. Mary’s: Beginning this Sunday, March 22, you will find a daily Bible Service led by Father Matera on the parish website www.stmaryssimbury.org that you can access every day. Join us every day to lis-ten and reflect on God’s Word during this difficult period.

You can watch Mass on television: The television Mass is broadcast seven days a week at 10:00 AM on WCCT-TV (WB20) and WCTX-TV (MyTV9). It can also be viewed Saturday and Sunday at 5:00 AM on WCCT-TV. The Mass from ORTV can also be found streaming live at these times on http://www.ortv.org/streaming/streaming.htm.

Funeral Guidelines from the Archdiocese: Unless it is already scheduled and planned, all funeral Masses are suspended. Additionally, wake services at funeral homes are not to be recommended. Priests are allowed to celebrate the “Rite of Committal with Final Com-mendation” at the graveside. Participation at such ser-vices should be limited to immediate family and close friends only, and their number must be in keeping with the limits established by the civil authorities.

Visiting the Church for Prayer: The church will be open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily for private prayer. In order that we can deep clean the church, we ask that you enter through the Magowan Center and pray only in the north wing, the wing closest to the parish office.

Sacrament of Reconciliation: Confessions will be heard on Monday, 6:00 to 7:00 PM and Saturday, 3:00 to 4:00 PM. The safest way to confess will be to use the screen rather than face to face.

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament: The Blessed Sacrament will be placed on the altar for Adoration on Mondays, 6:00 to 7:00 PM, while confessions are be-ing heard.

Parish Office: The parish office is open for the time being. If you can conduct your business by phone, that would be helpful.

Food Cards: If you are in need of Food Cards during this period, please contact Fr. Matera or the Office (860)658-7627.

Stations of the Cross: Stations have been cancelled for the remainder of Lent.

Religious Education Classes: Children will work at home with their parents on assignments provided by our Religious Education Coordinators.

Youth Activities: Activities scheduled for March have been cancelled. Those scheduled for later dates will be reevaluated as the date draws closer.

Virtus Training: The Virtus Training schedule for Monday, March 23, has been cancelled. It will be re-scheduled for a later date to be determined by the Office of Safe Environment.

The following activities will be rescheduled and resume at a later date: Parish Retreat, Fr. Mater’s Lenten Se-ries, Deacon Art’s Bible Study, The Men’s Ministry, Lenten Evening Prayer, Altar Server Training.

Religious Education Program, Grades 1-6 will be transitioning to a homeschool/online format during this time of social distancing. Your children have their books with them and the curriculum guides are in their folders and available on our website under the faith formation tab. You will be sent online resources to help with their continued faith formation in order to finish our year on time. Always feel free to contact me if you have any concerns or questions. Kathy P: reled1-6@stmary- simsbury.org.

Jr. High: Dear Parents - Please review Unit 16 with your child. You may want to review it first and send me any questions you may have regarding the information. This is the last chapter in a trilogy teaching your stu-dents Jesus is Prophet, King and Priest and the roles eve-ry baptized Catholic has (even teenagers) as a Prophet, King and Priest. I will be sending the review questions from their books to ensure they understand the lessons. These reviews can be returned to me by mail to: Lori Ryan, 131 Old Farms Rd, West Simsbury, CT 06092.

High School students and parents: An email has al-ready gone out to all confirmation parents, if you did not receive this message please contact youth ministry. The last 2 classes for confirmation 3/22 and 4/5 will be moved to an online format. Each person will receive a link or information by email to be able to attend.
