I want to begin by expressing two things:
First, I appreciate the latitude you gave me as a congregation to try a new kind of
worship service -- The Vine. This more contemplative style of worship has
connected with a number of people on Sunday mornings, and I enjoyed the
different format as well. The average attendance was about 20 people.
Second, on behalf of the congregation I want to express gratitude to
Rev. Tim Russell for leading and preaching the 9:45 Contemporary
Service. He has done a fabulous job since the beginning of 2016. His
leadership and support enabled me to lead The Vine service -- trying
something new. Thank you, Tim.
Beginning May 1, I will resume leadership of the 9:45 Contemporary Service, and The Vine
will cease as a worship service on Sunday mornings. While The Vine service did not pro-
vide the alternate worship experience that I had hoped -- one that would help to alleviate
some of the crowding at the Contemporary Service -- it is my hope that we can find a time
during the week that such a reflective worship experience might work better, and then
offer it to as many people as would like to participate.
We continue to have a wonderful challenge before us as a congregation. While some
churches are trying to figure out how to best deal with dwindling worship numbers, at
Horne Memorial we continue to grow. The Traditional services at 8:30 and 11:00 are doing
fine and have plenty of room to receive more people. The challenge that presents our
entire church family with the opportunity to think outside the box, is the continued growth
of the 9:45 Contemporary Service. The Fellowship Hall has provided a fine location for the
service over the years, and many people have been able to worship there as they have
learned more how to love and live as disciples. Presently, the Contemporary Service is
consistently our largest single worship
service, and as such, has outgrown the space of the Fellowship Hall.
In order to meet our Christ-given mandate of teaching, baptizing and making disciples, we, as
a congregation, have the privilege of coming up with a vision and a plan that will help more
people attend Horne Memorial -- particularly those who connect most with the more
contemporary style of worship. I have been reading through our church history book again,
and find encouragement at how forward-thinking those who came before us were as they
thought about a place out of which to do ministry. They stretched their own comfort zones
and their pocket-books. As we, too, look forward may we find inspiration in their example.
Grace and peace,
Ross

Disciples Needed
The greatest issue facing the world
today, with all its heartbreaking needs,
is whether those who, by profession
or culture, are identified as
“Christians” will become disciples —
students, apprentices, practitioners —
of Jesus Christ, steadily learning from
him how to live the life of the kingdom
of the heavens into every corner of
human existence.

Day45—It has been a long road, but Vernon is on the last leg of his stay at the hospital. Vernon has
made it to the rehab unit due to his wonderful therapists, nurses and his hard work. They will start
therapy, three hours each day. Once out of the hospital (I don't know how long he will be in
rehab) he will continue with outpatient rehab. We have so, so much to be thankful for when I look
at where Vernon was and where he is now, all the thoughts and prayers that have come our way,
food brought to the house, many get well cards and visits from people. I look at how much people
have given and we feel truly blessed. Thank you all. –Sallie Novak

Horne is an amazing place to worship, share in a church family, and learn and grown in Christ. We
are so thankful to have some amazing volunteers that quietly work behind the scenes to make eve-
rything run smoothly, and make us all feel loved and cared for. We would like to thank a few of
those today:
Bet Barber for coordinating meals for the family during times of bereavement.
Jan Conn for lovingly sending out cards to our church members during sickness and hospitaliza-
tion as well as joyful times like graduation and confirmation.
Michelle Haller for sending out our newspaper and radio announcements for the past 5 years.
Beth Smith for making our Elbert Jones Sunday School Class feel loved with her baked goods.
Leigh Headington for maintaining our website, so we can reach out beyond our church body.
Karen Wiggins for refilling our pens, pew cards, visitor cups and envelopes so our worship space
is organized.
The Nell Holland Circle for the beautiful prayer squares.
The Prayer Quilt Ministry for making those in poor health feel our love through prayer quilts.
All the Sponsors of Fellowship Dinners, so we can come together every week to
fellowship with our church family.
And praises that this is just a few of the many wonderful people that work diligently in the back-
ground to make Horne feel like family. Bless you all!

GriefShare Group meets every Tuesday from 6:30 - 8:30 PM in the Church
Library.
It may be hard for you to feel optimistic about the future if you’ve lost a
spouse, child, family member, or friend. This can be a time of deep hurt, a
confusing time, a time when you feel isolated and have many questions about things you’ve never faced before.
The GriefShare support group will meet weekly to help you face these challenges and move toward rebuilding
your life. Each session will include a video seminar featuring leading grief recovery experts and small group
discussion. Workbooks are $15 each and scholarships are available.
If you or someone you know could benefit from a warm, caring environment during the long journey through
grief, please contact our GriefShare Leader, Judi Kuykendall at [email protected] or contact the

News About Our Children
Servant Spotlight Bet Barber has been a part of Horne Memorial since 1966, and a member of the choir since
1967. Over the years, she has helped with children’s choirs and taught elementary age chil-
dren in Sunday School. She has been a communion steward (along with her husband Bob).
Currently, she helps Miss Marie with pre-school programs and graduation. She loves to play
the piano, so that others can sing along.
The church activities she most enjoys involve music. The church ministry she feels most
passionate about is helping to provide food for families dealing with sickness and bereave-
ment. She also enjoys helping to provide snacks for the VBS staff. She says, “teenage helpers
are fun to feed!” Her favorite scripture is Luke 12: 48 “For unto whomever much is given, of
Him shall be much required.”
VBS! July 5-8. It's almost here! Registration for participants
and for volunteers will be open on May 15. Check the web-
site at that time for the registration link.
Our theme this year is "Cave Quest" and we are so
excited about this year's music, crafts, and
stories! Our mission will be Wheels of Hope, a food truck ministry sponsored by Edgerton
Memorial UMC in Selma. We will collect money and children's books for them.
We will once again have a bulletin board with donations needed in the preschool hallway across
from the kitchen. Please look at these and consider what you might be able to donate for our VBS this
year!
Thanks for all the support and excitement for our VBS...It is a wonderful way for our children to grow
in Christ each year!
Club 4:12 will be back from June 12 - August 14, for rising Kindergarten students through rising
6th graders. We will give our regular Sunday School teachers a break for the summer. If you feel
like you can serve God in this way during the summer, email [email protected]! We will have a
less formal study and lots of fun. We will study, Pastor Michael Slaughter's book for children, Dare
to Dream.
We will also study "Journey with J.W.-John Wesley's Ride Through Methodist History". We will
learn all about the founder of Methodism and we will kick off a church-wide "Flat Wesley"
program for the summer. Flat Wesleys will be available to print out on the website and we will have
printed copies on the table by the office. Take Flat Wesley with you as you travel this summer and
send us a photo! Hopefully, we will all learn a little more about John Wesley and share with others
wherever we are.

Forty days after Easter, we celebrate Jesus’
ascension into heaven. This occurred 10 days
before Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus’ followers, as he had promised.
Jesus’ ascension reminds Christians that although his body couldn’t remain present everywhere,
we can universally experience his spiritual presence. In fact, Jesus’ final words to his disciples —
and to us — contain this key promise: “I am with you always, to the end of the age”
(Matthew 28:20, ESV). -The Newsletter Newsletter
Eighteenth-century brothers John and Charles Wesley, co-founders of the Methodist Church, were
prolific hymn writers. At one point, they made a concerted effort to increase the number of
Pentecost-related hymns available to worshipers.
Use Charles Wesley’s hymn “O Thou Who Camest From Above” as a prayer that the Holy Spirit
will burn brightly in your heart and life today:
O Thou who camest from above,
the pure celestial fire to impart,
kindle a flame of sacred love
upon the mean altar of my heart.
There let it for thy glory burn
with inextinguishable blaze,
and trembling to its source return
in humble prayer and fervent praise.
Jesus, confirm my heart’s desire
to work and speak and think for Thee;
still let me guard the holy fire,
and still stir up thy gift in me. -The Newsletter Newsletter
Fellowship Dinners are served on Wednesday nights from
5 – 6:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall. Everyone is invited, no
need to preregister.
A generous love offering is appreciated to cover expenses and
to help with the ministry project of the night. If you would like

A hymn for Pentecost
Always with us
P A G E 1 1 M A Y , 2 0 1 6
The disciples were celebrating Pentecost, originally a Jewish festival, when the Holy Spirit descended on them
and birthed the church. Pentecost, which began as a harvest festival, had come to commemorate the giving of
the law. The book of Ruth became integral to festival worship.
Why Ruth? This short story doesn’t mention the law, let alone God giving it to Moses. Yet in Ruth’s devotion
to her mother-in-law (“Where you go I will go …. Your people will be my people … ” [Ruth 1:16, NIV]), she
fulfills not just the letter but the spirit of the law: lovingkindness — all the more remarkable because she’s a
foreigner. Boaz, too, demonstrates exorbitant kindness to Ruth.
As Christians celebrate the Spirit bridging differences in Jerusalem, uniting all nationalities by making the gospel
message intelligible to all people, we too can remember Ruth’s story. For in it, God unites two enemy peoples
for his grand purpose: Boaz and Ruth’s marriage leads to King David and, ultimately, to King Jesus. Today, the
Holy Spirit continues to unite all categories of people under Christ’s reign for the good of the world.

A Cool Fact
In the UMW program book for May, there is a story about how we came to celebrate
Mother’s Day. A Methodist woman Ana Jarvis, and her daughter also named Anna, organized
Mother’s Day work clubs and wrote letters to congressional legislators until President
Woodrow Wilson declared the first Mother’ Day in 1914.

books and DVDs for other groups to use. Our Bible study DVD list has grown
with these wonderful donations. An updated list is available in the library if you
need new suggestions for your Sunday school class or Bible study.
Sarah Circle meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 7 PM. We meet at
Horne or in a member's home. Our membership is made up of moms of school age children, how-
ever we welcome women of all ages. Due to the fact that many members are mothers of young
children,
Sarah Circle focuses on missions that support children. We have adopted needy children at Christ-
mas, made baby blankets for young mothers, collected food for Clayton Area Ministries, support-
ed BackPack Buddies and adopted college students from Horne. The current President is Stephanie
Bass, who can be contacted at [email protected] or 919-634-0090.

The gift of water
Water is a wonderful sign for
baptism. It is a gift of God from
creation. It cleanses us from that
which has soiled us. It refreshes
us when we are hot and tired.
Without it we could not live.
Whatever use we make of water
it can become for us a reminder
of God’s gift of love and grace in
accepting us into the household
of faith. –NewsletterNewsletter

The word “mission” often
implies traveling to another
country to teach and work. The
work done in foreign missions is
important, of course, but we
can’t all make the trip. What we
can do, however, is be faithful
servants where we live. Mission
is about putting the face and
name of Jesus in front of those
who don’t know him. We can do
that in many ways — any place
and any day.
Liberia
Mission News
Mary Zigbuo and her husband Herbert were missionaries in Liberia and have visited
Horne many times in the past to talk about the need in Liberia. They have stayed at
Helen Little’s home on several occasions when they were here sharing their ministry
with us. Herbert passed away a few years ago and Mary returned to the US
after she took his body back to “his Liberia” for burial. Most of their children live in
NC.
Pictured, is a bridge of a crude network of network of large trees interspersed with
bamboo over a wide body of water. This is their only access to some of the remote
communities. Like the bridge to Gweyee that allows people to cross turbulent streams.
God uses us to help discern and provide resources to bridge the resource gaps that
impede our efforts to provide quality, but affordable, healthcare for families struggling to
provide their basic needs there.
This is one of the many ministries supported in our yearly mission budget that Horne
supports.

Peace w/ Justice Sunday, May 22
According to the Bible, true success comes when we do what God re-
quires of us, namely “to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk
humbly” with him (Micah 6:8, NRSV). God wants us to use the talents
and gifts he’s given us to pursue his kingdom on earth.
Success comes when we share our achievements, blessings and wisdom
with others, especially people who are hurting or in need. Success
comes when our family is tied together with love, prayer and worship
— and when we share one another’s struggles, successes and goals.

Host Family Needed! The Clayton Rotary Club will sponsor a high school student from Japan for
the 2016-17 school year. They are looking for a host to make this exchange student a part of
their family for 3 months. Please contact Hensley Scott at 919-795-8292, if you are interested.
End-of Grade Testing: It is that time of year when our community schools need help with
proctoring for the EOG. Riverwood Middle has reached out to Horne to ask for help with this
need. If you are looking for community service or volunteer work and can proctor on Wednes-
day, May 25 and Thursday, May 26 they need you. The time is 7:30 AM—11:30 AM. A brief
training will take place before you receive your assignment. Anyone 18 or older is eligible to
volunteer unless they are still in high school. If you are interested contact Kim Nappier at 919-
359-2769 or [email protected].
Our Church Building is an Important Ministry & Outreach Tool: Not only does the
Horne church family serve the Clayton community "outside the church walls", we also serve
our community by offering a welcoming and comfortable facility where individuals and groups
can meet, learn, grow and serve. Currently, we host eleven Girl Scout Troops, our spon-
sored Boy Scout Troop and Cub Scout Pack, Alcoholics Anonymous, Cotillion, our church
Preschool and summer Vacation Bible School, a Community Toy Drive, and so much more!
