SEEDS OF FAITH There is a brevity, a certain terseness, in the scripture readings for Easter Sunday. Peter’s speech in Acts is built of direct, pointed sentences. Paul’s letters are based on straightforward creed-like statements. Even the Gospel story only briefly recounts what will turn out to be one of the most remarkable events in human history—the resur-rection of Jesus from the dead. Advertising agents call these encapsulated points of information “bullet points.” Scripture scholars call them kerygmata, or “kernels” of our faith. Actually, “kernels” or “seeds” are good terms for these statements, since throughout the Easter season, we will hear in the Acts of the Apostles, the Letters of Paul, and the Gospel accounts of the days following the Resurrection exactly how these kerygmata began to flow-er, how they continued to grow through the life of the early church. May these Easter “seeds” of faith serve a similar purpose for us, too, so that the life of the Risen Christ will flourish in us and through our witness in the coming days. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

HAPPY EASTER! Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me,

though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this? John 11: 25-26

Easter time is a wonderful celebration that allows us to rejoice in the promise of

Christ. Our faith flows from the faith in the resurrection. “Easter is the celebration of the Lord's resurrection from the dead, culminating in his Ascension to the Fa-ther and sending of the Holy Spirit upon the Church. There are 50 days of Easter

from the first Sunday to Pentecost. It is characterized, above all, by the joy of glorified life and the victory over death, expressed most fully in the great resounding cry of the Christian: Alleluia! The octave of Easter comprises the eight days which stretch from the first to the second Sunday. It is a way of prolonging the joy of the initial day. In a sense,

every day of the Octave is like a little Sunday.” (from USCCB website). Now more than ever, we need to find moments to rejoice in our faith. As this global health crisis continues, we pray that God will shower us with hope, empathy and

love for our neighbor. May the Easter light shine brightly in your hearts.

St. Mary School “It is not enough that you love the young, they must know

they are loved." - St. John Bosco

SCHOOL UPDATE—COVID 19

Here is an update from the Superintendent of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles: “As a result of the revised statewide “Safer at Home” order, remote learning will be extended

through Sunday, April 19. Our intent is to resume in-person instruction on Monday, April 20, but much will depend on orders from public health officials at that time.” We

will keep our community members informed as we receive information from the Department of Catholic Schools at the Archdiocese of L.A. If you need to contact someone at the school for information, please call (661) 273-5555 or e-mail the

principal, Ms. Rios, at [email protected]. Messages will be checked daily. The school will be closed between April 10-17 for the traditional Easter vacation.

CALLING ALL ALUMNI OF ST. MARY SCHOOL

The 2020-2021 school year will mark the 60th Anniversary of St. Mary School. We are honored to have educated so many children and are proud that this tradition continues. For many, attend-ing St. Mary’s has been a family tradition as generations have graduated from our school. We are currently planning various events for the next school year in order to celebrate 60 years of providing a quality, rigorous academic education in an environment where children feel safe. As we prepare for the 60th year celebrations we are asking all alumni to please join our alumni net-

work. By joining our alumni network, alumni will be able to receive information about the 60th Anniversary activities, newsletters and updates about the school. Alumni can join the network by visiting the school website at: www.stmaryspalmdale.org (go to “Alumni” tab under “About” section). Thank you all!

Our Disneyland raffle has been a great blessing to Saint Mary's Youth Ministry (SMYM). Last year this raffle helped our teen leaders participate in spiritual growth and leadership camps. The raffle also sup-ported our Sunday Youth Nights and retreats, espe-cially our summer retreat. Recognizing the im-portance of keeping the COVID19 epidemic under control we will postpone the drawing until May 31. We will continue our sale as soon as our pastor thinks it is appropriate to return to our ministries. Please do not hesitate to contact Nancy at Youth Ministry 661-947-3306 if you have a question. Thank you very much for your understanding and for al-ways supporting the St. Mary's young church.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

It has been said that the most convincing sign of the Risen Christ is the Risen Christian. Today, in parish-es around the world, new life is drawn from the wa-ters of baptism, and new Christians are thrilled to see the crowds pour in to join in the feast. On Easter, we do not say the Creed, but rather renew our baptis-mal promises with hearty responses. We are taking the first joyful steps on a fifty-day-long celebration. In the southern hemisphere, the world is slipping into winter, but for us in North America, the earth itself seems to sing hymns to Christ’s victory. Look this morning for the fresh paschal candle standing near the baptismal waters. It was consecrated in the hours of the night, will burn brightly for fifty days whenever we gather for prayer, and will glow again at every baptism and every funeral in the year ahead. Even though we may be gathered around the candle someday in sadness, today’s joy at Christ’s victory over death will shine through. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos‑Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
