Comments from Deacon Dale Brown St Paul was not perfect; in fact, no saint was perfect.

They were human beings, just like us, and they had to face problems, hardship, suffering, and temptation, just as we do. They did not live carefree lives; in fact, it was their very challenges and

failings that God used to make them into saints. That's what St Paul is trying to tell us in today's Second Reading. He says that although God has given him extraordinary mystical experiences, God has also given him a "thorn in his flesh, an angel of Satan to beat him." Paul prayed repeatedly for God to remove this thorn, but God refused, in order "to keep him from being too elated." This strange passage raises two questions. First, what was this thorn? No one really knows, but scholars have many theories. It may have been a physical ailment of some kind; or a particular temptation, like lust or

pride; or the discouragement he constantly felt from

being rejected by his Jewish confreres; or it may also

have been his fiery temperament, which always seemed to get him into trouble. Whatever it was, it was a continual source of pain and irritation to St Paul. The second question is: why didn't God take this thorn away? St Paul tells us that it continually reminded him of his human weakness, inspiring him to depend more fully on God's grace. This is what he means when he writes: "when I am weak, then I am strong." And this should be a comforting thought for us. It means that our thorns, whatever they may be, are not signs that God's anger or displeasure, but signs that he is teaching us, as he taught St Paul, true wisdom, the wisdom of humility and trust in God.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of

Peggy White, Mother of Amy Lafont

A Message From Fr. David: Thank you for the loving expression of support at the

celebration for the priests of St. Mary’s this past

Sunday evening. Thank you especially to those who

set up, served, and cleaned up.

Thank you to the KC’s for the pork barbeque, to

Mama Baudo’s Chow Bella for the pasta and

Los Portales for the Mexican food.

We were able to express our gratitude and deep

appreciation to Fr. Abraham for the last 3 1/2 years

that he served here at St. Mary’s and St. John’s.

The impact of his goodness and faithfulness will leave

a lasting impression on our parish family. He

expressed his gratitude for all the love he was shown

and for all the ways he has been supported by so many

folks since he first arrived at St. Mary’s.

Gathering again as a parish family was such a

blessing. We priests felt your loving kindness and

prayerful support that night by your presence, the

hugs, cards and heartfelt words.

God bless you!

July 4, 2021 - 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Celebrate Life!Celebrate Life!Celebrate Life!Celebrate Life! Please pray for the women in our parish who are with child.

Prayers are a wonderful way to support a mother & her family.

Dear Father,

we ask you to protect the little babies who are being knit together in their mothers’ wombs. Comfort their mothers & fathers

during the time they are growing & develop-ing. Lord Jesus, give these smallest of per-sons the strength to come into this world, to

fully participate in your creation. Send your Holy Spirit to infuse their souls with love for you. After long, healthy, &

loving lives, bring them safely home to your heavenly kingdom.

Amen.
