Gospel Reflection The resurrection appearance of Jesus recorded in today’s Gospel occurred on Easter Sunday. Three days after Jesus’ crucifixion, the disciples were still cowering in fear. Jesus appeared to them in His resurrected form and reassured them, offering His peace, and showing them His wounds to

confirm that it was indeed Him. The disciples rejoiced at this. Then Jesus gave insight into what was coming next. The disciples were to be sent out on mission. They were to take the news of Jesus risen from the dead to the world. On their own, this would have been an overwhelming and impossible task. But Jesus did not leave them alone, just as He does not leave us alone. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to guide them. This promise was fulfilled on the day of Pente-cost. Jesus also said that through the Holy Spirit the Apostles would have the authority to “forgive” and “retain” sins. Here Jesus instituted the Sacrament of Confession. The Apostles passed this ministry of forgiveness down to their successors (bishops & priests) even to to-day. Thus, the Sacrament of Confession originates with Jesus Himself and is guided by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Make Giving Part of Your Summer Plan

We need to be especially mindful of our commit-ment to giving to our par¬ish and our local church, the diocese. The Chronicle of Philan-thropy reports that No-vember and December are the biggest months for giving in the United States. But for those lazy

days of sum¬mer? Not so much. Just think about the giving impe¬tus during the holiday season. Every school class-room has a charitable proj¬ect, youth groups take a turn working at the local soup kitchen. Offices sprout “giving trees” and shelters are inun¬dated with food and donations. The Christmas spirit inspires us to share the bounty. Cold weather brings out our desire to make sure others are shel-tered from storm. But often, charities tell us that the shelves are not quite so full in the summer, even though people are still hungry. Agencies scramble to fill the roster of helpers who are out on va¬cation, and sometimes people forget to call and ask how they might fill a need. Even parishes turn to electronic giving programs to make sure that fi¬nancial donations continue during the summer weeks. Christian stewards are well aware of summer needs, as well as being aware of their own need to give throughout the year. For the Christian steward, the spirituality of gratitude to God is part of their everyday lives and motivates their generous heart. On a practical level, this can mean involving your whole family in a sum¬mer project at a shelter or soup kitchen. With kids out of school, there’s a great opportunity to fill some idle hours with some eye-opening charitable ventures to a part of town they’ve never seen, or an agency they’ve never visited. The Christian steward can offer to pick up the slack for a day or two when an agency is short on helpers. Remember to make that special monetary gift that equals our holiday giving. We can use spring housecleaning, not as an ex¬cuse to spend a day running a garage sale, but instead as a chance to visit a charity with our surplus and spend the day helping. We should, of course, not forget our parish when we go away on vaca¬tion. Make sure to in-crease your gifts to make up for those weekend Masses you will not attend at your parish. Also, many diocesan appeals take place in the spring and summer. Giving to the diocesan annual appeal is an excellent way to support the ministries of the lo¬cal church that no single parish could undertake by itself. Summer offers a chance to have fun and adven-tures. Your summer stewardship plan can be as unique and ben¬eficial as the season itself.

Pentecost & The Holy SpiritPentecost originally was a Jewish feast that occurred 50 days after the Pass-over celebration and commemorated the giving of the law to Moses and the Israelites on Mt. Sinai. On the Pente-cost following Jesus’ resurrection and ascension, the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and those gathered

with them, bringing fulfillment to this feast by bringing the new law in the Spirit, which is written on our hearts. The descent of the Holy Spirit is depicted using Old Testament imagery. The “strong driving wind” and “tongues as of fire” are reminiscent of the encounters with God on Mt. Sinai by Moses (see Exodus 19) and Elijah (see 1 Kings 19). The presence of the Holy Spirit manifested itself miraculously through “different tongues.” As the context reveals, this indicates that the Apostles were supernaturally able to speak in many languages and be understood by the diverse crowd. This evidences the Holy Spirit’s role in bringing unity to the people of God. Sin separates but the Spirit unites. The fact that the diverse crowd, representing many nations and languages, could understand each other served as a re-versal of what happened at the Tower of Babel back in Genesis 11. At that time, due to sin, people were separated by various languages. At Pentecost, due to grace and the power of the Holy Spirit, people who would have been separated by language and nationality were brought together. This unity is a characteristic of the Church. Pentecost tradi-tionally marks the beginning of the Church and reminds us that the Church is meant for all peoples. In fact, the word “Catholic” means “universal,” indicating that it crosses societal, ethnic, and linguistic barriers. In the Church, we all speak the same “language” because we profess the same faith, despite our many differences.

Stewardship from the GospelJune 11, 2017-Most Holy Trinity“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son” JOHN 3:16Is your love conditional? Is there a price others have to pay to receive your love? Are you generous with your time, money and possessions? If you give someone something, do you expect something in return? Do you give your time freely or do you “fit it in” when it’s convenient for you? Pray for a grateful and gener-ous heart.

Indifferent and Lukewarm Souls Meditation:My daughter, write that it pains Me very much when religious souls receive the Sacrament of Love merely out of habit, as if they did not distinguish this food. I find neither faith nor love in their hearts. I go to such souls with great reluctance. It would be better if they did not receive Me (Diary, 1288). My Prayer Response:Lord Jesus, may my love, faith, and fervor in receiving You in the Eucharist be an ardent prayer for indifferent and lukewarm souls—that You may not be pained. May their hearts be set aflame with love for You.
